iPhone 3G Camera Replacement Repair Directions

Anyone know how I can tell if my camera is damaged? The shutter doesn't open anymore after I dismantled the thing and put it back together when replacing a faulty lcd.

@ChristopherLuck If the shutter does not open it is likely a bad camera connection. Follow this video and check out the cable to be sure it is fully in place.

@RepairsUniverse It seems to be fully in place, I have two phones. One with a functioning camera and one with what I presume to be broken. When putting the functional camera in, the phone doesn't turn on. Putting the broken one in allows me to turn it on, but the camera shutter stays closed..

@ChristopherLuck Wow, that does seem very odd. Both are the same model, correct (3G or 3GS)? We have never heard of an issues with an iPhone not powering on because the camera was not working. Even if swapping a 3GS camera into a 3G it will still power on.

@ChristopherLuck I would not think so, to our knowledge at least - that should not effect it at all. It may be worth trying a replacement camera, just to test it out. They are quite cheap these days.

excellent video, i wish i'd seen this before i tried replacing my battery. now i've got a broken camera cable. the other videos gloss over how to remove this detail and none of them advise you against removing the metal arm that holds the camera in place (which is what i did).

@cobweb657 There are a few possibilities. Possibly it is a faulty camera, causing signals that freeze the device. Could also be a connection issue, or even a software issue.

Camera replacement would be our best guess on the hardware side.

@dOminiCTHUOK Yes, replacing the camera will resolve that issue. Many times dirt or dust will get trapped in the shutter and not allow it to open. Simply replace the camera and it will fit it. Replacements are available at RepairsUniverse (dot) com.

So i got a iphone 3g s from a friend and tried to fix the power/lock buttin when i got inside and attempted to fix it i put it back together to fin theat the ear speaker, camera were not working. So i attempted to fix this problem and just settle with a broken lock button but when i put it back together not only did the camera and ear audio were still not working but now my iphone is turning off every few minutes and rebooting all by its self. im pretty frustrated and would like help. @FrenchBallsamics Hmm, well the power/lock button could be an issue with the flex cable and contacts located under the buttons. I would just double check that the camera and earpiece speaker are fully connected, if they were working before it is likely just an install issue. Does the iPhone function fully (screens, messages, apps, etc), besides the rebooting?

@RepairsUniverse Yes well it used to work properly just the lock button and vibrate togglrd a bit. As i saw a few videos i had decided to do it myself and turned out bad the videos were not showing my numbet 3 on the lcd screen and i accidentaly f*&! it up. This broke the ear speaker. and some how camera. now i cant make any calls but the microphone still works even on speaker. And i was wondering how much it would be to get it fixed? or even maybe ( w/ out them knowing i broke it) get refunde

@FrenchBallsamics Tough to say when it comes to costs, a local repair shop would be your best bet to get it diagnosed, from there you can likely do the repair yourself.

I just did this on my 3GS ,my camera conector was disconected from motherboard,i just conected the camera and everything works good :P big like for this video it saved me about 20e for replacing the camera.sorry for bad english

do you have any ideas what maybe wrong, was working fine before i touched it, one last thing i noticed when i put the phone back together the little gold tab near the warranty sticker on main board had broke off not sure if this has any affect on the phone of camera

@dalboyinoz Glad the video helped! As for the camera issue, it sounds like a connection issue. Flickering is a common sign of this. I would not think this tab would effect the camera, however, connections to the motherboard are likely the cause. Disassemble and take a look for loose or ripped connectors/flex cables. Good luck!

@brotdw2 I believe they have a few subtle differences, software issues may also be present (we focus on hardware). But for whatever reason, the cameras are not cross compatible, from the information that has been given to us.

Okay so I already commented but this is still to do with iPhone 3G. Basically if I switch off the phone by the off button at the top and after like a minute later if I want to switch it on either pressing the menu or switch button it won't switch on it will just not switch on then I have to press the two buttons at the same time(menu and off button) it really gets on my nerves because then If I want to switch it off to save the battery then I can't because if I want to text or call some urgentl

RepairsUniverse. I bought a 3GS from eBay, faulty. The motherboard is fine so I ordered replacement parts digitizer, lcd and a complete back. The complete back doesn't contain a camera. Could I use the phone without the camera in place or does the iPhone recquire it for security reasons?
