The bake sale done by the students was designed to get you talking so you can see with your OWN eyes how racist SB 185 is. Admitting students based on race/ethnicity in itself is a RACIST idea.

@Veritatis61 I don't think more or less of any race should be admitted into colleges based solely on race, as I don't think more women or men should be allowed to go to college merely for their gender. Colleges should admit students, who did their best in schools, volunteered in their communities, and wrote a great essay on how they plan to affect the world around them.

@4MyNation actually, no... the bake sale is racist because it is basing the prices on race. if the discounts were given based on the groups having been previously overcharged for the same baked goods as whites, THEN the diversity bake sale pricing wouldve been based on past disparities and not race. affirmative action redresses discrimination, this bake sale is not redressing anything; theres no precedent for the discounts, its just about race.

@Lady0Pamela affirmative action (aa) redresses current trends; its not like reparations where people are compensated for inequities of generations past. aa mostly applies to sex and race, but i think religion and sexual orientation are admissible; i suppose any trait tied to demonstrable trends of discrimination could be factored in. im saying white admissions decreased post-aa. asians... that would depend on whether theyre being admitted in higher numbers because theyre asian.

Asians though as we know are getting into college at greater numbers not because they are asian but because as a whole they preform better and put greater importance on education? @Lady0Pamela depends on whether theyre being discriminated against for their race. ratio of qualified applicants vs accepted applicants is taken into account, not overall population. people arent accepted based on what they can afford. asians do perform better academically, but whether their acceptance rates are solely based on this would need to be studied; grades and test scores are not the only criteria schools use. i think aa applies to religion and sexual orientation too--see wikipedia.

Next, although SB 185 is similiar to affirmative action it is not a duplicate of affirmative action and it does not mention sexual orientation or religion as considerations but does include the words "other factors" loosely allowing a school to choose to see those as other factors or not. What happens if a qualified applicant can't afford the school?

@payasoinfeliz There are scholarships for all races and genders except if you are a white male, that would be racist and sexist. For a white male to get a scholarship it would have to be because he is left handed, has a certain name, is of multiple birth, obese, tall, short, anything but his race or gender. There is a college fund sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus, could you imagine the uproar if there was one sponsored by the Congressional White Caucus?

@Lady0Pamela aa doesnt influence scholarships; those are separate things. and people are free to offer scholarships to white males--its happened before. and a lot of people dont know that you can apply for scholarships aimed at certain groups even if youre not of the target race. i dont know where to find the specific numbers/studies used to guide aa policies, but there are many studies on discrimination out there which are not necessarily used for that, but are interesting reads nonetheless.

Is there a site where we can see the statistics of ratio of qualified applicants vs. accepted applicants? Should over all population be somewhat of a factor? Out of all graduates if there were more whites in the class then blacks, and only some of them applied for college from both groups, wouldn't we naturally see more white kids in college then black kids?

@Lady0Pamela case by case, its going to depend on what can prove. relating to trends however, you conduct studies while controlling for variables other than sex, race, etc. to find discrepancies. dont know of a central location to find all stats, but the application of aa varies based on location. overall population is not very important; only people who apply can be rejected, so there is no need to look beyond the pool of applicants. intuitively, yes, but it depends on the situation.

Even if we just focus on the pool of applicants, I would love to see the statistics of those who applied vs those who were admitted seperated by race and gender to see if there is a real discrepancy. @Lady0Pamela so, redressing the first bake sale would be necessary to present a proper analogy to affirmative action. in this case, whites would need to get a discount at the second (truly analogous) sale to offset their having been overcharged previously. bucking the trend. accounting for a disparity due to bias, you offset that bias to get an outcome more representative of objective results (non biased). of course, ideally, there is no bias to remedy, but thats not the reality, unfortunately.
