  • I hate when people have this awesome idea, and then get someone with zero skill to show what it can do. :(

  • You know, I hate winter because the cold weather messes up the tuning on my guitar, especially if i have to play outside! so I've always joked around saying "I need lasers for strings"...I'm telling you, if this technology becomes available & affordable, there will be a market for it! great job fellas, keep up the amazing work :)

  • cool invention, so take away the geek and give a proper guitarist a go

  • that shits pretty cool, but could you try another video with someone who knows how to play and not just like a test?

  • are they talking to R2D2????

  • 123 hating people, keep experimants and keep rockin guys!! forget the rest!

  • Three words: 1) bends? 2) sweeps? 3) chords?

    Topic closed.

  • @DmitriSkif Three words: 1) It's 2) a 3) experiment

Palm slapping you in the face closed.

  • God people, it's just an experiment, calm the fuck down.

  • man people can get over themselves, I am a guitar aficionado, but Im not flipping shit about this experiment. Hell I think its pretty damn interesting. It sows an iterest in guitar AND an interest in programming. If nobody combined the two, you wouldnt have that sweet tone that Boston's Tom Scholz pushes out. Its not an insult to musicians, your arrogance is.....

  • wow people are so fucking dumb they'll make up the stupidest thing just so people who cant play shit will think theyre cool with this stupid guitar toy. That's an insult for us musicians

  • this is a discrase to sgs. i have a lmited edition epiphone sg 400 and never in the world would i let anybody mess with it like that. or other sgs, gibons, any guitar.

  • that is so fuckin stupid

  • matt bellamy from muse needs this.

  • who in the world would do this to a SG!!!

  • @pzbasshunter8 -It's an Epiphone- i have done worse to junk!

  • MrIncredible2293 oh so your a retard attempting poetry? Fuck off, no one cares.

  • Ok I personally prefer the sound of an electric guitar with strings but this could prolly be used for some cool effects

  • How did I get from Asking Alexandria to this?

  • terrible idea. how would you bend!

  • its wawesome if u perfecting this would by great

  • Nerds but wicked

  • this could be a profitable idea, i love the concept, stringed guitar is so limited unlike this! i would run out and buy one but i dont haz money :(

  • this is bull shit wats the point of learning guitar if its digital all i hav to say is pure bull shit

  • @james707MD It pisses me off so much when people fuck with the best parts of life...

  • @FatsPandaMan Guitar strings are the best part of life?

  • @LordAngus1992 no, I meant in general. Any talentless person can play this...

  • @james707MD You are in idiot. You would still have to learn how to play with this thing simply because it doesn't play for you.

  • i f i were plying a guitar and somebody was playin around with the tone and volume buttons id snap it over his head lol

  • @cobravince me too

  • I'm not electronics master but I am a guitar player and even though it kind of looks like a guitar it does not sound like one. Sounds more like a Casio keyboard. Not knocking the idea or the inventiveness of their creation but I am saying, PLEASE..............do not call it a guitar. It only has the shell of a guitar and 99.44% of guitarists on this planet will not run out to by it and add it to their playing collection. But, don't let that stop you.

  • @rothchild17 exactly. its like looking at jacksons "synth guitar" its not a guitar its a synth.

  • give one of these to jonny greenwood

  • needs too strings... wakka wakka

  • Now i know where the sounds of my atari were made :P :P Good work guys keep at it :)

  • this is coming from a nerd not a musiscian this is fucking amazing

  • one thing overlooked--it sounds like shit. :o)

  • I know this is an old video, but how long did it take you guys to build it? and what do you guys use to power it and amplify the chords from the laser? Pretty freaken neat guys. :)

  • im reporting you fuckers to DARPA

  • as cool as that looks, it will never ever replace a string guitar haha

  • When is this going to be on the market?

  • I have seen the future, and it is LASER-STRINGED GUITARS.

We're on the way to a cyberpunk future, and I, for one, approve wholeheartedly.

  • I DEF WANNA USE THIS FOR FILM SCORE!!

  • Synthesized or synthetic guitars are just another tool in the toolbox. No more, no less.

If YOU can't find a musical possibility in this, then it's YOUR failing, and NOT the failing of the instrument.

  • Is the guitar powered by "Lazers"?

  • nice somewhere in time short. I have one too.

  • UP THE IRONS!

  • GO UCF! Nice project fellas!

  • I can't tell if half these negative comments are the result of stupidity or just plain arrogance. Maybe both.

These aren't professional instrument craftsman. They're electrical engineers. This is an electrical engineering project.

And it's a pretty damn well made one, and building that thing alone is better than whatever the hell you guys could conjure up. "Don't make this" "if u make this i will beat the shit out of you".

Seriously, fucking grow up. Maybe then you could make something useful.

  • thats fricking sick

  • cool invention

  • shave your face

  • As a new instrument, it has a lot of potential. The tone is reasonably interesting and can be developed.

    Good Job!

  • i just dont want kn=ids running around with these saying they can play guitar

  • @tnt420tnt - They CAN play an instrument, and it's this instrument. Just as any other musician can with their preferred instrument.

So, yeah, they can play the guitar. In this case, the synthesized guitar.

  • That's amazing man...seriously, that's cool. Love the choice of body shape. :] SG's always a nice shape. XD

  • I WANT ONE!!!!!!

  • Nice side burns.

  • Guitar player suks :3

  • cool!

  • GENIUS PURE GENIUS

  • Bored

  • I was sadden by the fact that the guy with the maiden shirt didn't attempt to play fear of the dark.

  • It would be funny if a random bloke from the future walked in on this video and asked to play that thing and to everyone's amazement the future boy played it like jimmy Hendix.

  • awesome, get all the kinks worked out and that'll save thousands on strings

  • Wooooo Iron Maiden shirt!!!!

  • Where do I buy one I want it

  • Give it to Steve Vai and watch him open up wormholes with it.

  • kill it with fire and rocks

  • thats a weird looking keyboard....doesnt sound anything like a guitar

  • What the fuck is wrong with people in the comments, they built the fucking thing, why cant they be the ones to showcase their work? Once they put all that effort into the project they have to hand it to someone else because they're not good enough to perform? This is a technical demonstration, not a performance.

  • if you make this i will fucking hunt you down just to beat the shit out of you

  • @JaredPiper23 i will make 15,000 of these and build a robot out of it to beat the shit out of you.

  • @xXHAL0Xx1 N-E-R-D

  • @JaredPiper23 How am I a nerd? You little fucking troll.

  • I have his shirt...UP THE IRONS \m/

  • Could appreciate more if you had a REAL musician doing a real song or riff...aweful planning guysl

  • maybe they shouldve gotten someone who actually knew how to play guitar to play this...

  • Please don't make this guitar

  • thats kool but i think you should have just bought a cheap peice of shit body reather then wasting an awesome sg body

  • it takes the pleasure of playing guitar and removes the feeling of playing. this instrument is ridiculous

  • if ur gonna make somthin like that make sure u know how to play it

  • I have to agree, it doesn't sound as good as the laser guitars all the kids on my block have. It's a LASER GUITAR! I give them an A+ for ingenuity alone even if he isn't joe satraini. and little matthew@the prince191-I looked @your profile and a few thoughts...screamo sucks, you don't know jack shit what you're talking about and I would almost bet money that you've worn make-up @some point in life cos u thought it was cool which makes you a fag in my book. I do agree that rush rocks though.

  • Doesn't sound too great, but keep on working on it this has lots of potential :)

  • go to any bar, find a musician, ask him to play your guitar for a youtube video(change the tone, pay him with sixpack),sell a bunch to famous rockstars for hella profit, give me ten percent of the profits for giving you this sound business advice(or else I curse you all).

  • Wow!!! that sounded Awesome!!!!! just kidding, sounds like an epileptic printer from the 90's..

  • this is super cool man. :) i would not mind playing one of these :)

  • interesting

  • Can you play chords on it?

  • it might be cool if they'd found someone who could play something-anything....so we could see what it really sounds like and how it works...bummer! but a cool idea,i guess!

  • as a guitarist i think this is rather interesting. future wave of guitars? who knows? sure the sound is odd,but it is a "project". kudos to these guys for the idea and their result.

  • i live right next to ucf. i just went to light up ucf. not very fun but anyways. great design

  • Awesomeness!

  • I think It's fake

  • @theprince191 I think it sounds like shit.

  • This should be sold :D

  • WHY OH WHY? oh that's right....it's a project. I prefer the sharks with lasers on their heads. Why kind of a ponce dodges callouses anyway? Can this be used for evil in any way?

  • stringless guitar lol !!! thats called a keyboard !!

  • sounds like mario

  • all these haters should stop hating and and appreciate this instrument. Im a classical guitarist but that doesnt mean I cant appreciate the instrument. When Robert Moog made the moog synthesizer there were plenty of haters saying he was destroying music...but whose legacy lives on?...MOOGS right? haha

    THis is neat.

Haters on youtube should spend more time practicing guitar than wasting their breath on great efforts they most likely will never achieve...just saying.

    Great JOB!

  • @SisterRogersVid One hundred percent agreed. Guys like Seteve Vai, Robert Moog, and Les Claypool could create an entirely new kind of music with instruments like this. THis is genius!

  • @SisterRogersVid There it is... "classical guitarist" that's all we needed to know.

  • @SisterRogersVid This is an interesting project but this is a great project that is pointless this shit isn't going to replace a normal guitar and sure it's just an experiment but if you ask me this is wasting time why not do a project that's more worthwhile something the world needs why waste talent on this big pile of crap.

  • @master18666 They're college students doing a school project. Let them do something that doesn't need to revolutionize the world and be fun. Why don't you go write some essay about something important instead of YouTube comments? Same logic.

Besides, just because it doesn't sound good doesn't mean it's useless. Ever seen a midi guitar? Similar idea. Stop being so afraid of change.

  • @master18666 You're aware Gibson pretty much said the same thing to Les Paul when he presented them with the electric guitar...

  • The criticism is unbelievable here. They're electrical engineers with an interesting new idea, not musicians. Plus, give them credit for putting it together, don't say "GEE LEARN TO PLAY GUYS." I doubt I'll ever look into it myself, but there are a million and one worse inventions out there. And hey, if you hate this, then without a doubt you hate the keyboard for not being a real piano. I doubt they got the keyboard right the first time. So LAY OFF! Good job, NezneL!

  • looks like a robot took a shit all over that sg

  • thats crap!! scrap that idea

  • Who the hell would want that?! Lasers?! What are you thinking?! Guitar players will forever love that feel of metal strings on wood. I remember when I first started playing guitar. The strings would dig into my skin. It hurt a little, but it was a good kind of hurt. Then the skin on my fingers got tougher, and I felt so accomplished. Laser guitars will never be popular.

  • nice shirt!!!!

  • Wow, how bout having somebody that could actually play the guitar to show us it?

  • cool! now play wasted years solo by iron maiden in that guitar.

  • WOW that's neat but in all honesty, I think what you guys managed to create is an upright keyboard. All in all it's very cool!

  • Nice Maiden T-Shirt also neat tech on the guitar :)

  • neat concept, it would be cool if you altered the attack, and waveform a bit to get a real string sound.

  • nice sideburns pal, A*!!

  • I see someone finally invented the electric hip flute.

  • you can invent a stringless guitar, but you can't buy a hd video camera?

  • this is retarted

  • fucking sick.

  • Looks like he's playing...

    *puts on sunglasses*

    Air Guitar

    EEYYYEEEAAAAAHHH

  • Touch synthesizer crammed into a guitar body.

  • ..SIDEBURNS!.. :D

  • Palm mute it. xD

  • Acid is no joke... I'm going cold turkey.

  • very cool.

  • Mmmmm..... Cool guitar, *SMASH!!!!!*

  • @theJessenger - I agree. Sure didn't do much for me either.

  • lol my dad whent to that school and took the same class

  • i so need this guitar

  • lets see you bend the strings

  • That poor SG. :(

  • @TNMinuteMan Poor nothing. It was probably crap anyway.

  • @arrisstuff Yeah, but the least they could've done was give it an honorable death. lol ;)

  • @TNMinuteMan What about the poor tree that was used to make a cheap SG :(

  • @arrisstuff who cares, the power of rock can help buy new trees

  • @RockerNathan97 The only thing a cheap SG can buy is bad highschool bands. :D

  • @arrisstuff Gibson SG's are very expensive

  • @RockerNathan97 there are sgs for like 200$....

  • @chiggyepicness remakes probably or forgeries. my uncle paid almost 2000$ for an SG

  • @Falloutfan961 Yeah there are gibsons that are really expensive like my buddy has one that is over 1,000 but epiphone has them for 200$ or more, epiphone is a part of gibson so it counts

  • @chiggyepicness technically gibson doesn't really own epiphone. atleast not as far as i've heard. plus epiphone remakes guitars from basically every (major) brand on the market.

  • @Falloutfan961 Well Epiphone and Kramer are even in the Gibson website now and if it is a part of Gibson it counts as a Gibson. :P

  • @chiggyepicness i like jackson personally. plenty of grind and i have an easier time working with the electronics. plus they own charvel now so i got something like a surf caster.

  • @Falloutfan961 Same here, the only thing is the rosewood, not a big fan but I love the King Vs.

  • @chiggyepicness :/ i have never seen a jackson with a V body that wasn't atleast 1000$.

  • @Falloutfan961 King V™ KVXMG...thats mine.

  • @chiggyepicness they're more than one guitar model by jackson with a V shaped body im sure.

  • @arrisstuff you can grow new trees! lol Whats with everybody having some enviromental angle with everything today? World is still here you guys! lol'

  • @TNMinuteMan Just messing. Maybe a little too much dedication. xD

  • I can see how this could be cool and all, but on the practicality side, this would be so much harder to play than a real guitar... cause you'd have to be sure to not break the lasers and press down accurately... also, I can't foresee how you would do fast single string picking.

Still a really cool idea though.

  • has some brian may like good company tones to it

  • Damn all I can think is I want to get at the synthesizer code and make it sound better than a sine wave. Have you thought how bends might be achieved with this?

  • Like al673 said. Why did you use a SG man? a yamaha or a kmart guitar would do. That poor SE.

  • Awesome, but you could have used a Fender Strat instead of an SG... That's sacriligious!!!!

  • no no dont do it

  • we cant play harmonics

  • That poor SG :(

  • That's a horrible idea. What if you burn off the ends of your fingers with the lasers?

  • to be fair this is just a first step, next step; sound quality, make it sound like an actual guitar :D Good job to all the people at UFC EE

  • pahaha sounds like the 80's ...or an oboe

  • I'd buy that

  • Very sad sound. Sucks.

  • MIDI Guitar FTW......sadly.

  • you guys are retarded how do you think great innovations in instrumentation come about?

    exactly like this^

  • Recorded with a stove.

  • @Skipz0rz Recorded with that guitar.

  • well when i saw this i thawt it wud be a little more... well more but pretty interesting none the less

  • it would help if he could play properly

  • When I first read the title I thought "I want that" but then I watched the video and I think "Nah, never mind"

  • how do you do harmonics on it huh? =P

  • 0:33 LMAO listen to it for a few seconds, then think, GAME OVER, LMAO

  • @michaeljackson5236 lol, sounds like the super mario dying sound?

  • haahahah dis suckz fkn nerds hahaha anywayz get a camra instead of a toaster next time

  • sounds terrible

  • In response to most of the comments: We already have fucking guitars. You want all your music to sound the same? Fine by me. Leave mine alone.

  • i <3 your potato, where did you get it?

  • really??......should've made a light saber with all that wasted time

  • Just like a Synthaxe really.

  • I reckon this is a pretty clever alteration to a classic instrument. Yes, I like the guitar in its original form. No, I don't think this is a 'waste of a perfectly good instrument'. It's simply recycling. Turning something into something else. It happens everyday and I don't see people complaining. Plus it clearly says in the description that this was for an electrical engineering project. Points to these guys for trying, and in my opinion, succeeding.
