I can see how this could be cool and all, but on the practicality side, this would be so much harder to play than a real guitar... cause you'd have to be sure to not break the lasers and press down accurately... also, I can't foresee how you would do fast single string picking.

I reckon this is a pretty clever alteration to a classic instrument. Yes, I like the guitar in its original form. No, I don't think this is a 'waste of a perfectly good instrument'. It's simply recycling. Turning something into something else. It happens everyday and I don't see people complaining. Plus it clearly says in the description that this was for an electrical engineering project. Points to these guys for trying, and in my opinion, succeeding.
