  • What a f***ing disgrace! I drop in to see my favorite performer sing a classic and I get f***ing Obama ad!

    Really?

News Flash: The people that search out Liam Clancy on youtube are not the type to vote for President Dumbass! As they say in the Emerald Isle, Bugger off you Bastard!

  • so sad real its day or night we part and we neer know the part we played in lifee night all

  • Thank you Ed sheeran for bringing me here, such a beautiful song :)

  • That was really lovely.

(It gets a bit eerie when I start feeling as if he's singing his own memorial. On the other hand...there couldn't be a better memorial for him.)

At the end he says, "Good night, God bless, safe home". Same to you, Liam. And to Tommy Makem also.

  • I've heard lots of singers do this. This is the best. The same applies for live performance.

  • When i ask my friends if they know/knew dear Liam Clancy, they looked at my kinda strange and used to say "Who?! or simply no" I felt sad... for them, for not to be able to hear such magnificent melodies of countenance and experience is just a pity, and an incredible loss!

I believe that if they thought how to listen to good music in school instead of Quantic theory of particles; the world would be less cynical and more romantic; rest in peace Liam :°)

  • I love you Liam til hell will froze and the the heaven falls down.

  • I love you Liam....never be forgotten.

  • Being 24 years young and loving it, I can't help but feel a sense of whenever I die, be it 40, 50, 60, or 100. I hope I can listen to 'A Man You Don't Meet Everyday' and live my life as I do in these days of toil and tribulation, to hear this in my golden years and knew I did right by myself.

  • ed sheeran brought me here

  • sad nice

  • When I listen to Liam and Tommy and the others, I believe in the possibilities of man and the future. They were truly inspirational.

  • The greatest prince of Bards was an Irishman. Pray, Lord, smile on that beautiful land.

  • one of my all time great tunes

  • this man is an idol to me fare play liam you changed the world of music

  • Thank you Liam...

Thank you for posting this video, " vlikavec" :-)

  • this allways brings a tear to my eye. Liam, a true musician and loving grand-uncle. allmost a year, miss you Liamo. x

  • @Rikki0 very good. As Luke said in the song The Molly Maguires "you'll never see the likes of them again"

  • If I ever get to heaven I will bring 5 creamy pints for me father, Liam, Tommy, Luke and me.

  • @Seanmcdhuibhne I'll bring the other 4 for Tom, Paddy, Ronnie, and me.

  • the definitive version of this song in my opinion - good night Liam RIP.

  • About 1960, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were frequently on stage at the "Hungry i" with The Smothers Brothers, Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, Shelley Berman, Professor Irwin Corey, The Limelighters, Jonathan Winters, Rod McKuen, and others. My high school buddies and I learned a few of their songs from the albums we all had. It was wonderful to revisit Liam Clancy with this video.

  • When he talks at the end, he sounds exactly like Finbarr Clancy who is a part of The High Kings. Family resemblance is cool :)

  • The song is wonderful too bad it is too short!! :(

  • grew up listening 2 d clancys and tommy that was 4 decades ago and the music is still well ahead of its time and will remain that way as u cant replace class

  • Great to hear Liam a year + after his death, but I find this the least effective of his versions that I've heard because of the orchestration, however "Celtic" it may sound. It is, I suppose, a version pitched to the taste of a latter-day audience that needs this lushness. But the song was never better than when Liam played it with just his guitar on the first Tradition album in 1959 or so. That was a classic for the ages.

  • Good night and joy be with you Liam Clancy.

God bless you and rest in peace.

    Greatest musician ever.

Your music and your voice will be in our hearts.

  • Bob Dylan once said Liam Clancy was the best ballad singer ever. That's good enough for me.

  • I think that if angels can sing, they must sound like Liam Clancy.

  • is this version on a record? forgive my ignorance, ive only a cursory knowledge of irish music so far. i have "come fill your glass with us" and the version there just really has half the power as this version does...

  • @WelcomeToDetroitWimp Yes; and I will never forget it. "Music of Ireland" the first disc is titled "Welcome Home" it is track number 5. They sell it @ all Barnes & Nobles. The CD that I originally had it on, I couldn't find a new copy anywhere but if you want to order that one online it is "Irish Drinking Songs" That is the last track on the album, I don't remember the number. They are both sound just like this, although studio recorded.

  • @milenaryan yea i actually just picked up 'come fill your glass with us: irish songs of drinking and blackguarding' and parting glass is the last song, of 14 i think, it also has some great others like bold thady quill and finnigans wake, the clancys with tommy makem, great songs.

  • In honor and memory of a great man. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on.

  • No Fear, No Envy, No Meanness. Liam's legacy.

  • I used to think getting goosebumps was just figure of speech.

  • great song but i prefer the dubliners version but may he forever rememberd

  • how the fuck could you give this a thumbs down, waht the fuck

  • all the harm, it was to me........

  • rip liam paddy tommy luke and ronnie

  • his son lives on in THE HIGH KINGS you might injoy as well they have their own twist to the tunes but not half bad at all ..my wife and i really injoy them ..haw ever there is a classic feeel that you get from the classics that is missing in randitions done by the new artist of today ..(not to say its bad but you almost feel like its loosing haritage or colture i mean even the irish twang is fading slowing maybe its just me ......buttoms up to the Clancy's

  • @after9pm2 i dont think he is liams son playing with the high kings

  • Bob Dylan held them in Great regard

  • help! i cant stop drinking an and im only 21 not even old enough to drink. I drink a pint ow whiskey a night and im getting the shakes! I need help but dont want it.. I cant stop and wont stop drinking and i dont know what to do,

  • @alchoholic20 Well when and why did you start?

  • I saw Liam & Odetta together only about 5 years ago at a folk festival in County Tipperary. I left that night with a new perspective on music. Every beating heart in that audience was enraptured by his endless charisma. Liam had a unique and complete talent. "Because All things must be what they are to their fullness".

  • Impossibly beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • play this at my funeral

  • @kipper154 Mine, too.

  • @kipper154

That's really weird, the reason i listened to this was because my dad just asked for it to be played at his funeral. Have a good one mate.

  • @kipper154 as long as you play it at mine, :)

  • musical genuis

  • i miss all of them, when i first started it was the Clanceys, Tommy Makem, and the Cheiftians. We need to come back to singing irish songs without all the lights and orchestra and such. While i love the High Kings Version, when i hear this one it hits my soul much deeper. Yerra, God Bless all of the above.

  • It's the reverse story here. I listened to the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem for many years. I later discoverd the Dubliners, Luke and Ronnie. There are all gone; however, I thank CHRIST that we have their music. We are better people for them. GOD BLESS THE CLANCY BROTHERS & TOMMY and the DUBLINERS !

  • Thank God we still have his and his brothers and Tommy Makems voices to listen to and to cherish. Their passing is a tough Parting Glass to swallow ...I will pass their beautiful music on to my grandchildren

  • good

  • This is a Serious song by Liamo..... Always reminds me of wakes in my family, The uncles be singin all their cares away to this ballad.....

  • wow.... i really love the song...

  • r.i.p liam..

    true legend!

  • Liam and his brothers plus Tommy Makem were talents and so unique, such as they will not be seen again. Their music was not just songs... but reflections of the lives they'd led.

I had seen them a few times in person, and regret the times I passed. Now they are all gone... but they resurrect every time I play their ablums.

    Thanks uploading this video.

  • Excellent version by Liam Clancy of a wonderful Scottish Tune, - this tune was as great as Auld Lyne Sang in by gone days of yore in Scotland, home to our forefathers - of us planters here in Ulster. Although it appears now to be an Irish traditional tune, perhaps some folk need to delve a little deeper in to their history books to establish the true origin of tune – it is OK to borrow a tune but not to steal it! Not ever great folk tune is Irish!

  • @prudence42 Who cares? It's a good song - why can't you leave it at that?! Does it really matter if it's Irish or Scottish??

  • @prudence42 Is that right? Was surprised to hear that Danny Boy was written by an Englishman.

  • @brelfan. The words were written by an English Lawyer which may account for what I feel is their Victorian sentimentality. I remember a BBC program attempting to trace the origins of the tune but beyond concluding that it was based on a lost traditional Irish melody it failed. The present arragement has something to do with an Ulster lady. It does'nt affect the its merits but it matters to those who treasure what little remains of the work of the itinerant harpers who contributed to our culture

  • @prudence42 If we started delving into history we might ask you scots to return what you borrowed from us - Gaelic, whiskey, the bagpipes, the kilt and even the Lia Fail which we lent to you to lend a bit of credibility to the bloke you wanted to crown -on second thoughts keep it. You see we realised it did'nt work! You might also realise the suitability of "and all the harm that I (we) have done/ alas was done to none but me (ourselves)".Would you like to borrow a sense of humour?

  • @prudence42 If you look it up on the net you will be advised 'not to be confused with a scottish song of the same name'. However in the wake of the Eiizabethan, Cromwellian and Williamite wars many Irish bards practised their trade in Scotland. Is a song/tune written by an Irishman - ie 'tabhair dom do lambh' or 'Lochaber no more' Irish or Scottish? What would the author say? It doesn't affect the music. But does it matter who wrote 'Hey Jude'?

  • i grew up with liam, tommy makem and the rest of the clancys singing to me, and i can remember times when their music has really effected my life at certain points, as im sure all of you can. artists, angels, pillars of the irish community, this is truly the end of an era. this was the last song liam ever performed, and a fitting one.

  • God bless you Liam

  • It's hard to remember the firestorm from traditionalists over the early Clancy bros and Tommy Makem recordings. Liam had a way with a ballad, none more so than this beautiful rose. Rest in peace mo chara.

  • Liam and his brothers (and not to forget Tommy Makem) represent the best of us...the Irish dreamers, the ones who hope for a better day.

  • I am actually Irish and I only heard this song for the first time on Brothers and Sisters - now I love it! Up the Irish and the yellow bellies!

  • i had the pleasure see him live along with ronnie drew rip johnny mcevoy and many other great folk singers in cork opera hse a few yrs back

  • i love this song... i just heard it in the May 9th 2010 "Brothers and Sisters" Season 5 episode entitled "Lights Out". It was sung at the end of the episode by Canadian Actor Luke MacFarlane who plays Scotty in the show.

  • @Alientrips I saw that too, and loved it. That's why I'm here, trying to learn more about the song.

  • @Alientrips Same.

  • @cheergirlirox

Greetings from Ireland. This is an old Irish song, like 1700 or so. Wikipedia it. Liam Clancy singing it (here) is the best.

  • PFR<3

  • @oldlonesomesong my children said i was being morbid buti said i hoped that it would be a long time away, lol

  • Cheers to Liam Clancy, In the past 10 years I too discovered the Clancy Brothers. Missed opportunities to see them in person prior to discovering their brand of music. I have found the folk music to be far beyond the title "Irish Drining Songs" that initially drew me to them. It is sad that the world has lost another inspiring poet, songwriter. Life is truly far too short. RIP Liam.

  • This is excellent. Laura

  • there is something about this type of music it touches soul, youll be sadly missed tommy and the clancy brothers r.i.p.......

  • Maidin mhaith! Beannacht Lá Fhéile Pádraig mo chairde! Have a good one. RIP Liam.

I will be celebrating and indulging in the black stuff tonight at the Irish embassy in Budapest.

This is one of my all time favourite Irish songs and wherever this finds you after tonight's fun "So fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all"

  • Beannacht Lá Fhéile Pádraig mo twitter chairde!

Off to the Irish embassy tonight in Budapest to celebrate.

    RIP Liam

  • Maidin mhaith! Beannacht Lá Fhéile Pádraig mo chairde! Have a good one. Off to the Irish embassy tonight in Budapest to celebrate!

  • they played this at my mates funeral on thursday, love it

  • Clearly, nobody seems to sing this well compared to Liam Clancy. Everyone else seems boring or silly.

  • "so fill to me the parting glass, goodnight and joy be with you all."

  • just putting together an ignite five minute 20 slide presentation I'm doing in Budapest tomorrow night. Gonna sing a bit of this before the final yes I said yes I will yes finale! Trieste-Zurich-Paris 1914-1921

  • This song always brought a tear to my eye.....now it's almost too sad.

  • I had the pleasure of listening to Liam sing Carrickfergus after hours at the Black Rose in Boston in the early 80s.

Bob Dylan is right, the best ballardeer ever. God Rest.

  • I first saw the Clancys in my hometown of Dundee, Scotland in the 1960`s and have been playing their music ever since. So sad that they have now all passed on - there will never be another voice such as Liam`s. They are all sorely missed.

  • God Bless Liam.

  • Goodnight my friend

  • A most lovely man. Your are missed greatly Liam.

The rest of you! Have you no homes to go to?

  • rip liam, sadly missed

  • Amazing!!

  • they are gone and im soon to follow

    slainte

  • Aye, we shan't see the likes of them again.

  • Once, if I should die...they should play this song for me at my funeral...

  • I've discovered Irish music a few years ago, but frankly I didn't have any idea of the Clancys back then because I only listened to The Dubliners (which are legends, too). But soon I found out who the Clancys were and I couldn't imagine a life without their music.

I was very sad when I noticed a month ago that the greatest balladeer ever and the last one of the legendary Clancys had died.

I love to hear their songs and enjoy singing them as often as possible.

I hope you found peace, Liam. R.I.P

  • Same as that, fair play to ya! Irish music all the way. Hes a hero of mine anyway an always will be, We need more men lik him!

  • Same as that, fair play to ya!

  • @Thanatos55555 The Clancy spirit lives on still in Finbarr Clancy, son of Bobby and one-quarter of the High Kings. Hell of a nice guy too. Had the pleasure of a few minutes chat with him in Providence RI a few years back.

  • @Thanatos55555 Well said.

Years ago, I heard Ronnie Drew and The Dubs; however, being a Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem fan, I kept listening to Liam, his brothers and Tommy. I recently discoverd the Dubliners. Both Ronnie and Liam captured Ireland's musical soul and gave it back us. Could we have asked for more?

  • just a beautiful song - listen to the passion in his voice.

  • The most terrible thing about the parting of Liam, Paddy, Bobby and the two Tommys is who's there to really fill their boots? Men such as this shouldn't be allowed pass on. Such talent.

  • @leonpat2002 i agree , Liam's son will never be as good as him, but finbarr clancy is a really good musician, but still you are right

  • makes the hairs on the back of ur neck rise!

  • Liam, I raise my glass to you.

You gave me many a year of fine music to enjoy.

The world is a poorer place now.

  • @iknklst i cant personally say i think the world is a better place, but i can say his music helps emphasize the good, and filter the bad, good music helps the optimism in my head.

    thumbs up for you! =D

  • Do you know, his family sang this at his funeral.....sad but fitting.

  • I think this song was sung at each Clancy-funeral (Paddy, Tom, Bobby and Liam). You also can see it in the video "Paddy Clancy Memorial - Clancy Brothers", which is on Youtube, too.

You used to quote Baudelaire the French poet on stage, in years to come they will quote you. You had the glint of a rogue in your eye and I would say you could charm anyone with the lost boy look. You said you were the last man standing of the five. You will be the last of them forgotten too. Tonight I will raise a parting glass to you.Sleep well.
