It was great to see Tony Slattery on 24hour panel people for Red Nose Day. He and Josie Lawrence were amazing, although Tony has aged a hell of a lot more than Josie.
What happened to Tony Slattery? He had a nervous breakdown a while back and is now in Kingdom with Stephen Fry. But thats not enough, we need him back. Tony Slattery needs to be appreciated again, bring him back to our screens. COME ON PEOPLE! TONY SLATTERY! What a character!
Yes, I saw Tony not long after his breakdown. He was not the same man. Years ago, I found myself heading for a work-related-stress one and WALKED AWAY, just in time.
They're more common than people think. I'm convinced governments hide the figures. If people knew the truth, they'd quit their jobs in FEAR every time they had a bad day.
Thing is, I had alternatives, but if you're showbiz.... I know Tony's trying to rebuild, but it'd be like ME going back to MY former life. Sad - and SCARY.
@robbiefoxohyes He was on Ready, Steady, Cook a few weeks ago (It's still on the iPlayer as I type this) - and it showed he's just not capable of TV any more, or live audiences at least, he was very uncomfortable - incapable of doing things and talking because he was so nervous. He was still funny though. Unfortunately as great an actor/comedian/person he is, and was, the lifestyle, breakdown and bipolar disorder have lost that same person who was so strong in the 80's and 90's.
I don't think it's like that. I think he just enjoyed being in the spotlight, but it got the better of him. There's a point around 1992/1993 that you can pinpoint in the Whose Line series where he's in control and enjoying being part of showbusiness, to where he becomes a loose cannon whose struggling to cope with the pressure of a live audience. That's how I see it anyway.
At 0:51, is that Peter Wingfield on the couch? Looks like ol' Methos from the younger days......yes, it's a reference to the Highlander series for those of you wondering "Who's Methos?"
The Tony Slattery clips are from "Just A Gigolo" and I THINK the Paul Merton ones are from "Paul Merton in Galton & Simpson's..." - a series of recreations of some of their classic shows. Gary Waldhorn was in a couple of episodes and he is seen in one of these clips involving Paul.
Ah - you couldn't have watched this piece to the END. The FIRST three clips feature Tony Slattery with Paul BIGLEY - but the last two feature Paul MERTON (well, strictly speaking, Paul MARTIN - he changed his name to Merton 'cause Equity already had a Paul Martin. Merton is an area of South London where he grew up). The two sets of clips come from different shows, but I put 'em together 'cause they were similar in style and contemporaneous (that's the SECOND time I've used that word this month!)
Hmm. Thing is, Paul Bigley isn't that famous - and there are several other equally-famous actors spread across the clips. As previously stated, I put the clips from TWO shows together, as they were similar in theme and period. And since Tony Slattery and Paul Merton were the MAIN stars of their respective clips, THEY were the two I headlined. Sorry for the confusion. And talking of confusion - are you "P" or "D"?
p.s. While I'm on, two other things - the whole thing only lasts 1 minute and 41 seconds, so how come you didn't watch ALL of it - but found time to send me a comment?! And how come you are familiar with the name of Paul Begley? He popped up in several things and had a distinctive face - but he's hardly a household name. And people call ME a walking encyclopaedia of The Business!
The 2nd char from the right on my smiley is supposed to be my moustache! No, Dorian Stentorian is a name I couldn't RESIST when I thought of it! My real name is merely Mike. Altogether, I have 80 pieces on 3 channels on YouTube. The other two channels are morpheusatloppers and mjvatloppers. This is in case I LOSE one due to copyright quibbles - altho so far, I've only had a few. As a big-time collector of records, tapes and disks, I've THOUSANDS of clips ideal for YouTube - but at ten a time...
:D Well it's a pleasure to meet you Mike, I used to be the porud patron of fifteen accounts, lol. Got to be too much of a bother. I assume you are from Britain, whereabouts are you from mate?
FIFTEEN! OUCH! I originate from East Anglia (yeah, I know - the land where a virgin is a girl who can run faster than her brother!) but am now retired to Thailand. I'll be AFK 'til tomorrow - or at least tonight (local time). I'm next going to try and get "The Music Box" onto dorianstentorian - plus 8 x Eighties videos. I've given UP trying to second-guess what'll raise copyright issues, so I'll just GO for it and delete any posts that get quibbles! Later...
Apart from some bits on shows (like "Whose Line..." and "Clive Anderson (something)") I have the whole SERIES of "S & M" - in total, about 3 hours of improvs with Mike McShane - and a pilot for a show that never got picked up - "Tiger Bastable". I rather liked it - but apparently no-one else did! It was a spoof on those thirties "Biggles"-type yarns - but very much NOW (well - THEN). However, none of that would do well on YouTube (and would take FOREVER to upload!)
I actually saw Tony Slattery's basde arse while we were both changing in the Pineapple studios in Covent Garden.

@snorgle To be fair, Josie Lawrence appears to have discovered immortality. I thought Tony was damn sexy with his beard... :)

@WhyGenFM3 - According to shrinks - many people enter the unreal world of showbiz to "overcompensate" for acute SHYNESS.
Which would seem to me like a person afraid of blood becoming a surgeon.
An example would be Julian Clary - who suffers from panic attacks.
Somehow, Julian copes. But I guess sadly, some do NOT...

No, it's Paul Bigley (who I saw just yesterday in a "funny ads" programme, here in Thailand - life is full of coincidences!)

LMAO!
Thank you! Tony is the best! Paul is amazing too! ^_^
