If you have a well socialized chow that you can be firm and fair with the dog will want to please you (not your neighbor not your friend down the hall only you and immediate family) And do not resort to physical correction, a firm no should be disapproval enough to make your dog quite ashamed of himself/herself. I was raised with them and found them loving, protecting, obedient and very patient to my childhood antics.

Chow puppies (and grown chows for that matter) are wonderful animals and I love them to death . . . but they are head strong need firm and fair handling and are not to be raised by people who are not fully prepared to match the chow will for will and make sure he/she is the boss. Do your homework before you sign up for one.

@Caite33 every dog above 40cm in hight has a strong will and needs to be handled carefully in the "pack" not only chows but nice for you to point to people that they are not that ok for children;;) . p.s. the way that dogs are bred these days u rarely find dogs with the drive they should have :(

oh, I had a chow-chow named cocoa and she was so nice until one day when I walked in the door from school my chow had ripped apart my lhasa. I will only get a chow if I don't have an other animals

I think it really depends on the dog. My chow chow Sugar is the nicest dog. She tolerates all dogs, esp. my sister's hyper rat terrior Fiona. Sugar also grew up with cats and loves them too. She does chase squirrels though. My other Chow King was really protective and a butthead. I think male chows tend to be more aggressive then females.
