I think it's less about his middling talent as a comic than it is the revelation we get about his character, the details about his tortured childhood and the depths that an outcast will go to finally have somebody listen.
The dark humor of the film is that Rupert is so exceedingly awful, so exceedingly talentless and annoying -- that it's hilarious that he actually succeeds.
I thought the big surprise at the end of the movie was that the crazy fuck really could host his *own* show. You expect it to be awkward and ridiculous but instead the audience actually laughs at his jokes.
@DonbeeFwz I lightly chuckled the first time I saw it, but now it's not really funny anymore, which just makes the performance of De Niro all the more incredible
@elvis316 Yeah his performance is brilliant, but his stand up is open mic hack material. Which suites the character though. The only really funny joke he made was the Jerry Langford tied up bit and he wasn't even joking.
@elvis316 I can clearly see that you have no idea about Robert De Niro kid so shut your fuckin mouth you moron. Stop whackin over Pamela Anderson on your computer and get a life. BTW. Your name for the video is finest, not greatest. De Niro rules when it comes to comedy, and you're just a jealous prick with no balls and no education who has no life. Go on and embarasse yourself, you make me smile with your idiotic, but funny comments kid.
@elvis316 Are you fuckin retarded or what? I said when it comes to comedies that this is his great work along with some other titles I mentioned, I personally think that this is his best comedy role though, of course that his best work is Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and probably this film, but what are you, retarded, can't read? Yes, this stand up up is great, to ignore it is quite immature from you, so cut the bullshit kid and grow up.
i certainly don't agree that it's his finest role, but it is a sadly underrated film. people always forget this one when they talk about the great deniro/ scorsese collaborations. thanks for posting.
@022171 Yeah it was a total bomb at the box office, it only made like a tenth of its cost, but it just goes to show money earnings doesn't truly show how amazing a movie is
@ishcarly its the scene on the street when they were arguing, then after De Nero left, the girl was shouting at him, at the exact time, you have to look at the left bottom corner and see Joe,Mick and perhaps the arm of Paul. then someone hasseled her, and the right side of the screen you can see Mick's smoking. it took me ages, must repeat this part for 10+ times lol
they received screen credits, as 'street scum'. I can't remember noticing, but they must have been in background of some scene--there were a half a dozen credits for said scum.
rate deniros stand up here? on a scale of one to ten, ten being Bill Hicks, one being Carlos Mencia, I would put this around .5 to 1.5. Stand up is hard, but I don't think he's supposed to be that good; it may be a statement that people will laugh their ass off at anything the applause sign tells them too on the tonight show.
@elvis316 O' c'mon he's better than fucking Mencia. You should put Mencia at zero because he doesn't even write his own shit, a least Ruppert did. I'd give him a 1.5
@elvis316 You're a fuckin retard, his performance here is 10/10, trully brilliant you cocksucker. He clearly shows his talent for comedy that he showed later on in Midnight Run, Analyze This, Meet The Parents. De Niro is a great comedian and overall one of a kind actor, a legend and an icon.
@grga888 De Niro is funny in this film, but not here. It's a masterpiece of awkward comedy, and if anything, this is funny because he's awful and the audience is laughing anyway. You missed the entire point of the movie.
@elvis316 bingo! the routine is supposed to be mediocre, just like rupert. the audience laughs because they expect to laugh. they merely assume that because he's made it this far, he's very funny.
This is awesome. It would be a shame if someone watched this before seeing the movie. I thought he was either never get to perform or bomb the first time i saw it.
One of De Niro's favorite roles and one of mine that he has ever played.

I wonder, was this stand-up routine funny ? To me, it seems a little bit funny, no better or no worse than a lot of the average comedy of the 80s.
