I like Brent's better, personally. Doug Robb doesn't have the right voice for this song... The cellos and his raspy voice don't really go together well. Doug is a really incredibly talented guy. You can hear that in The Reason and Out of Control... and pretty much the rest of their music. I like Hoobastank and Shinedown both, I'm just saying this isn't Doug's kind of music. :p
@BrickChickens i think otherwise. doug, sings smoother and the only reason is because doug has a powerfull voice and brent, ehhh i hate that country accent.
Dear trolls aka candy asses worldwide, it doesn't matter what the hell you type and post. this music is most excellent and here to stay for all those who want to listen. C:
Apocalyptica really sucks ... none of these guys are good at songwriting.. I wonder why so many big name singers are helping these cellist morons... terrible corny music. This guys should disappear from the rock scene.
@prsguitar22 what in the world posssesed you to do this, obviously you have no live and get off on insulting talented musicians kindly keep your mouth shut next time
I'm surprised how many people hate one version and love another. If I could have it my way this song would be done 50 different times by 50 different people so I could hear the different ways everyone sings it.
@LordAkaneon wow really? and what constitutes as real music? hmm? dunno abot you but bret smith is one hell of a fucking vocalist. and amy lee is a great femenine vocalist for new metal. and back to bret. he kicks all ass over this guy.
Brents version is far better, it hold more pain and anger but I must admit Doug has that haunting melody that works. I think most rock stars could sing this song and make it their own, thus the power of Apocalyptica and their writing
I like both, but I like Doug's version better. Brent is more powerful and angry, but Doug is more flowing and has a softer tone and has a wider vocal range. I guess if you like something heavy, you would like Brent more, but if you're more of a softie, Doug is the best bet. I'm a softie. :)
i listened to brent smiths version and doug robbs version back to back and i think they are equally brilliant obviously they are going to have a different feel to the song because they are two different people i could happily listen to both again and again.
I think this is the version I hear on the radio all the time. I love them both. They do have noticeable differences, but I think they each have their own very complimentary traits.
Both are equally good. Both vocals are full of incredible emotion and power. Both singers come from amazing bands that have gotten a great deal of radio time.
Face facts, people... Doug Robb and Brent Smith are equally awesome musicians and both do and equally impressive job on this song.
I love both of the songs. Brent's is my favorite though. It's... More mature, seemingly. It's got this... "I've been beat down so many times, and you're the only one who gets me, but we can't do this, but i have to" vibe to it. It's more... world-weary.
Doug's, however, sounds younger, more wild and passionate, more like a "everything's shit, but you're the only stable thing and I fucking love you and hate you at the same time".
I think brent's version gives this song another dimension which in my opinion is meant to be a more wild and passionate one . Doug's version is good too but brent's voice makes it more intense.
I like Brent's version better. Not that this is a bad one, but I hear more music than voice. With Brent music and voice fit together - both are strong and full of emotion. Well, at least that's what I feel :) I'd like to hear Jared Leto singing it though...
I don't mean to start a youtube war (please don't) but imo, this is the better version. Brent's version didn't affect me at all, and Doug'a made me go into tears whilst singing, because of the emotion he carries in this song (and to be honest, I'm in a situation like this right now, with my 10-year long significant other. If you were 22, you'd probably do the same)
I personally like this version more. Brent has a harsh strong voice that over powers the band. I am so distracted by his voice I dont appreciate the instruments being played. I do love this one though. He voice goes well with the music being played. Its strong and passionate so my vote is to this guy
I like both versions to be honest. Both singers bring something unique to the song and it is interesting to hear the two versions. I just wish the audio quality of this video was better.
It's sad that people can't see that neither voice is "better". They're just different. I like Doug's voice for this song because I can feel the emotion it.
Just because Doug has a smoother, somewhat higher voice doesn't mean he sucks.
Brent's voice has more power, but Doug's is smoother. I like them both but which one I listen to is relative to my mood, and that tends to be better with Brent. Both are good, just different, even with the same lyrics and instrumentals.
this version sounds like straight up horse crap... sorry.. Brett's voice is unbeatable.. it was perfect for the song... i hope this song doesn't get very much playing time honestly.
Mmm, I prefer the other version, Brent´s voice are more passional, you can feel it when he said "And I´m not strong enough to stay away", like he really suffer it, well, it´s only my opinion ^-^
@SAYURINARIEL I agree. The first time I heard this song was this version w/Doug Robb. I was in my car listening and thought "eh, it's ok" and changed the radio station. Then I heard the version with Brent Smith and just went "wow!" and now I can't get the song out of my head!
@JelloEater13, @MissyP80 totally agree, thoDoug Robb has a nice voice the power this song gives easily covers him, at times he sems to do a slow-mo on the song he's not feeling it as it should be felt., like the Brent Smith version way better

I don't get all tingly and goosed bumped listening to this version. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Hoobastank, but I just like Brent's version of this song better.

This version should be banned for the Cruel and Unusual punishment that people endure listening to this!!! It sux!
A versão com o Brent é UM MILHÃO DE VEZES MELHOR... Estragaram a música colocando esse cara pra cantar... Realmente podiam ter colocado o vocalista do Breaking Benjamin que ele com certeza teria feito melhor. Doug Robb fica bem melhor cantando The Reason msm.... :s
Brent's voice is so much more unique than Doug's. There's nothing special about Doug's voice. Hearing this version makes me appreciate Brent's voice that much more. I think Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin could have done a lot better than this.
I'm definitely biased but I think Doug's voice is WAYYYYYYYY more suitable for the song. It has a rock edge versus Brent who has a country/rock sound.
I reaaaally love Hoobastank, but i think that Brent's voice is better for this song. I'm not saying that Brent voice is better than Doug's. Kudos to Doug anyway
@CanderisOrdo I am not certain of this, but my friend told me that it's because Shinedown is releasing Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom) again and apparently they can't do it at the same time or something about the label. It's just what my friend said though, I am not 100% on this.
@CanderisOrdo apparently they didn't secure the rights from the record label to use Brent's voice. Stupid to say the least. If a singer wants to perform with another band, they should be entitled to regardless of record labels.
For me is hard to choose one between Brent's and Doug's version... Brent's version is great, but this one is a great too. I thing if there was a different version, different lyrics, different music or something different could have been better for this version... Anyway, this song is great!!! Thumbs up and horns for Apocalyptica and Doug lml
no offense to Doug..but that's pathetic since the original version is with brent's voice, i guess the right word for brent's version is irreplaceable..i don't know what's the prob of the companies and they went with this in the US
@Jorge12081989 agreed. I think Brent's voice is a lot stronger, and just better suited for this style of music. I'm a bit disappointed they chose this version for radio airplay.
Actually there are 3 versions of this song and all 3 are great. Tipe Johnson's vocals on the acoustic version from the dvd was my favorite and then I heard Brent's version which became my favorite and now Doug's.....I love it! What's a girl to do?
Doug's voice, I feel, is more appropriate for this song. First of all, he has a more soothing voice versus a harsher one. Personally, I have always been able to feel more emotion coming from Doug in his songs. I know him to be a more passionate person. I simply think Doug has a better voice, harsher and rougher is not always wanted.
Plus, this can really be a good thing for Doug and Hoobastank. They need to be recognized more. Shinedown is already all over the radio..get something new on there
@angelatennispro It depends on the indivdual. No offence to Doug but I think Brent's better. But one thing I love about these 2 versions, both bring their styles in the songs. So there is nothing sort of who's copying who.
I don't know where you're from but here in Singapore, Hoobastank is so much recognizable than Shinedown. I don't even hear a single Shinedown song on the radio! Haha! Everything pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. They don't even play Apocalyptica
@SilvuRBL I agree with you both. BRENT AND DOUG have good voices they know how to sing this ong on their own style and with their own flavor XD BUT honestly for MY TASTE, Brent´s voice is move rougher indeed, IS LIKE IT SUITS BETTER FOR ROCK, but maybe is just each people taste...=) they are GREAT singers anyway and it would be that both version could be included in some disc so non of the fans of each singer feel disapointed. =D. IF THE SONG IS STILL PLAYED BY APOCALYPTICA I AM PLEASED XD COOL
AHHH. *Hoobastank fandom* One of my best friends introduced me to Shinedown over the summer, though... hm. I prefer Brent's vocals for this specific song, but both vocalists are great at their types of music.
I just wish Doug took more freedoms with the melody when he recorded this song. Could've sounded even sweeter than it does right now.
Smith is totally better for this song. Reason why Robb is singing in this version is stupid. Shinedown just released new single and Atlantic Records doesnt want that Smith is singing in two different single which are played in USA radios at the moment. Money talks..
I like this version better than Brent's...even Though Shinedown is awesome

Brent's voice is so much more unique than Doug's. There's nothing special about Doug's voice. Hearing this version makes me appreciate Brent's voice that much more. I think Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin could have done a lot better than this.

I like both versions of this song, but I prefer Brent's version, but I'm just more partial to his voice in the first place.

I like the other version better.

Why did they replace Brent Smith?
CanderisOrdo 1 year ago
@CanderisOrdo I am not certain of this, but my friend told me that it's because Shinedown is releasing Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom) again and apparently they can't do it at the same time or something about the label. It's just what my friend said though, I am not 100% on this.
thuperdot 1 year ago
@CanderisOrdo apparently they didn't secure the rights from the record label to use Brent's voice. Stupid to say the least. If a singer wants to perform with another band, they should be entitled to regardless of record labels.

like this version ay better!

For me is hard to choose one between Brent's and Doug's version... Brent's version is great, but this one is a great too. I thing if there was a different version, different lyrics, different music or something different could have been better for this version... Anyway, this song is great!!! Thumbs up and horns for Apocalyptica and Doug lml
adarkrain 1 year ago
no offense to Doug..but that's pathetic since the original version is with brent's voice, i guess the right word for brent's version is irreplaceable..i don't know what's the prob of the companies and they went with this in the US
Jorge12081989 1 year ago
@Jorge12081989 agreed. I think Brent's voice is a lot stronger, and just better suited for this style of music. I'm a bit disappointed they chose this version for radio airplay.
musicislove90 1 year ago 2
Actually there are 3 versions of this song and all 3 are great. Tipe Johnson's vocals on the acoustic version from the dvd was my favorite and then I heard Brent's version which became my favorite and now Doug's.....I love it! What's a girl to do?
castlefreak 1 year ago
Doug's voice, I feel, is more appropriate for this song. First of all, he has a more soothing voice versus a harsher one. Personally, I have always been able to feel more emotion coming from Doug in his songs. I know him to be a more passionate person. I simply think Doug has a better voice, harsher and rougher is not always wanted.
Plus, this can really be a good thing for Doug and Hoobastank. They need to be recognized more. Shinedown is already all over the radio..get something new on there
angelatennispro 1 year ago 58
@angelatennispro It depends on the indivdual. No offence to Doug but I think Brent's better. But one thing I love about these 2 versions, both bring their styles in the songs. So there is nothing sort of who's copying who.
I don't know where you're from but here in Singapore, Hoobastank is so much recognizable than Shinedown. I don't even hear a single Shinedown song on the radio! Haha! Everything pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. They don't even play Apocalyptica
felisestilo 1 year ago
@angelatennispro
But for the style of Apocalyptica and music the other voice was better for the song in my opinion.

@angelatennispro finally someone i can relate to! Way better...this guy is so underrated. Robb did a nice job
Zexnoise 1 year ago
@angelatennispro Doug's voice is WAY rougher than Brent's. Actually listen to Brent's version some time, ok?
SilvuRBLX 7 months ago
@SilvuRBL I agree with you both. BRENT AND DOUG have good voices they know how to sing this ong on their own style and with their own flavor XD BUT honestly for MY TASTE, Brent´s voice is move rougher indeed, IS LIKE IT SUITS BETTER FOR ROCK, but maybe is just each people taste...=) they are GREAT singers anyway and it would be that both version could be included in some disc so non of the fans of each singer feel disapointed. =D. IF THE SONG IS STILL PLAYED BY APOCALYPTICA I AM PLEASED XD COOL
shalotstage 7 months ago
This song is so great that there's hardly a singer who's able to spoil it. Doug is doing a great job, never heard of him before!

I love this version, I think it's better than the one with Brent.

...I like it with Brent Smith MUCH better. :/ I wouldn't complain if Apocalyptica did a different song with Doug Robb... :D But not this one.

I think there's no better version for this song. Just two great singers with a great band

And it's killin' me when you're away,
i wanna leave and i wanna stay
I'm so confused,So hard to choose.
Between Brent and Doug
And I know it's wrong, and I know it's right.
Even if i try to win the fight,
my heart would overrule my mind
And I'm not strong enough to stay away

mm no me late la idea que haya cantado el de hoobastank aunque la version es buena =/

Smith is totally better for this song. Reason why Robb is singing in this version is stupid. Shinedown just released new single and Atlantic Records doesnt want that Smith is singing in two different single which are played in USA radios at the moment. Money talks..
