@phatnatyouknow I have only met one US Secret Service Agent, and she was assigned to a counterfeiting detection team. I think you see mostly male agents in the protection detail because they likely have military combat experience, which is obviously a good skill set for that detail.

Firearm training is a MUST. 10 times out of 10, every Secret Service Agent is a sharp shooter (not sniper). It's a great job to get into. The US Secret Service hasn't been a part of the Department of Treasury since 2003.
I quote the Department of Treasury's very own website.
Similarly, if you go to the Secret Service's own website, in their history, they say how they were transfered to Homeland Security in 2003.
Lastly, if you go to the Department of Homeland Security's website, you'll see that the Secret Service comes under their organisational structure.

To clarify an earlier comment. The Secret Service is NOT part of the FBI. In fact, they are not even part of the same executive department. The FBI is part of the Justice Dept. while the Secret Service is actually a part of the Treasury Dept.

You have to be well qualified. you dont have to be a marine or seal but you usually require a background in military and firearm training. You also have to be mentally and physically superior. In summary dont mess with a sercret service agent, chances are he could kill in milliseconds.

Well maybe he wasnt secret service. I was talking in general. Of course some secret service agents are less effective than others. But if you knocked him out he was either not Secret Service or he was drunk. You were at a bar. Either way I dont know, I wasnt there. But SAS are well trained too. It really depends on the person, not the training. Right now im learning Krav Maga.

@Jononutoob, military background isn't required. I did plenty of research and it's not required. Everything else you said is true. Firearm training is a MUST. 10 times out of 10, every Secret Service Agent is a sharp shooter (not sniper). It's a great job to get into. It's extremely difficult to get into, but it's worth it once you're in.

@Jononutoob actually all you need to be a SSA (1811) is a bachelors degree. You can apply to be an 1811 entry level on usajobs.gov yes a military background helps as far as the entrance exam goes because you get veteran's preference. Which depends on years served can get 5-10 points. do your research.
