Not to rag on her because this method does work to pick up a dropped or tipped bike but to save yourself 1) time and 2) embarrasment you should get a firm grip and the handlebars from the inside (the side of the bike she was on) and pull up as you roll the bike forward. It will lift up quite easily and saves your legs and back. I've done this a hundred times while dirtbiking after screwing up my knee.
Then again I dropped my bike flying of a trail dodging a 750cc quad at full speed...
You know what, my bike has been dropped twice ... once because of me when I was new ... second some bastard hit my bike from the back, I wasn't there so he just drove off ... motherfucker.
But anyway, both times the clutch lever snapped. So from my experience, even if I do this method and pick up my bike, I'm still going nowhere lol.
Once upon a time I felt on gravels while I was stopped cause my feet were sleeping so I have had the hardest time with this method, people around gave me a hand, so in the videos instructors have a very good traction from ground, if it is wet, gravels, sand it's another matter; anyway this is a god method , good boots improve traction too.
@keepnitreal94 woah punk?? thats harsh man. don't you know your about a month late its ok i remember we i was a dumass loser too. calling ppl punks wat r u a fucking rocker from the 80's or just some emo bastard that doesn't have a life
What difference does it make if the bike falls on the opposite side of the kickstand? If you can get the bike upright, you should be able to keep it balanced until you can sit on it like your'e riding it and put the kickstand down or, if you want to be a little braver and stronger, walk around the back of the bike while holding it upright.
I remember being at a campground and watched a guy flop his Honda cruiser with a trailer going uphill and he had his wife with him. I didn't help but it took 5 guys to get it back on it's wheels.
I have a 1996 suzuki gsxr 750, i recently dropped it on it's side. I picked it but it does not start, I have been looking around on the internet and found that I need to reset the tilt/tip sensor. Anyone can make a video on this would be great.
Hey man, That's good advise. I am learning at a riding school, If i pass my riding test that same day i will purchase a 250 Ninja. Is it worth investing in side protectors?
Why, you ask ? Because assuming you don't crash (most likely when you'll be stopping abruptly or turning slowly), you never know what can happen to your bike when you've parked around the corner for 5 minutes and someone who stumbles upon it makes it fall to the ground, or when you're walking it somewhere and you lose your balance, etc. My side protectors saved the paint and the radiator on my Z750S three times already. Twice when she was parked and fell down, once at a red light...
Yeah well I'm not saying you ever will, I hope not. But you never know ! You're stopping and the ground is really wet : your shoe loses its grip and your bike is really heavy. You slip, the bike drops.
You park your bike at a petrol station. A big gust of wind blows and the bike is on a slight slope : the bike drops down.
I am def going to get some installed! I am a new rider and i will most likely tip the bike over at 1 stage, or 400 stages. Plus I do not want to scratch my new bike! :)
who the hell actually picks their bike up like this? For the few times I have ever dropped a bike or seen anyone drop one, I/they are strong enough to pick it up by the handel bars...
all i can think about is that with my luck i would push it over the other way hahaha. my sv650 is 400 so its pretty easy to pick up, not that i do it on a daily basis haha
Great technique, and it'll save your lower back, but let's be honest. Tina looks like she could power lift more than most male riders, so no wonder she makes it looks so easy.
@jblue2000 Well, the next person to try picking up their motorcycle was--no kidding--a great grandmother. On her second try, using this technique, she lifted her BMW R1100RS right up (all 600 plus pounds of it). Unfortunately, I only have still photos of this accomplishment.
How do you pick up a 450 lb sport bike in the grass?
While I was being negligant, I put my kickstand down in the grass (my old bike was a ninja 250) and I figured the ground would hold it up. Not really, the bike sunk into the ground like I never put the kickstand down in the first place.
It was impossible to pick up, I did this technique b/c I saw it before, but I couldn't get ANY leverage and my feet kept slipping in the grass like I was on ice. Had to get my father and a friend.
I parked my cbr 1000rr in the grass and before i put the kickstand down it lost tracktion, while i was pushing it forward and fell in the grass and luckily I picked it up on my own and it took ALL of me and more to get it up, but i didn't do it the way she did, I kinda put my shoulder into it and bent my knees and after straining my ass off I finally got it up.. Thats probably not any help, but thats how i did it.
It's a BMW R1200ST. Tina is currently president of BMW Bikers of Metropolitan Washington (BMWBMW). She did the demonstration at the club's annual Square Route Rally, near Thurmont, MD. Following Tina's advice, one of the members who is a great grandmother (really!) picked up her BMW R1100RS on the second try using this technique.
Wow, that's a cool technique. I was going to say I want to try that out... but that would mean I dropped my bike so nevermind, I don't want to ever ever have to do that.
hahahahaha are you serious... your probably a girl right cuz if you cant lift up your own bike you should have a different bike or get some muscle if its gonna hurt your danty little back.... my dads HD dyna wideglide is 700 pounds or more withh full gas tank and all the fluids in it and im only 14 and i can pick it up from setting it down nicely lol and im not even that big im almost the shortest in my grade and not even close to the heaviest.... so get some muscle....
I dropped my Africa Twin on an off road track and the wheels were not contacting the ground so this technique was useless. Whenever I tried to apply it, the bike just slid further down the track. Had no choice but phone for help...
i have dropped my 2000 zx7r once at a stop light when i stepped in sand and my foot slid out didnt drop it hard but that thing was pretty heavy picking back up thay are just passed 500 pounds with full tank of gas
then again...ppl who lay them down..are noobs...and if a busa is laid down...the rider is probly not getting back up again.(if u kno wat i mean) and only EXPIRIENECED riders are able to successfully ride a hayabusa
i know guys who have raced for 30+years who still drop their bikes. You can be the most experienced rider, but you still dont know if theres oil or sand around the next bend.
I've been riding since 1976. I ride to work every day. I low sided about two weeks ago on my DRZ400 (admittedly, goofing off). When you get confident that you are good enough not to fall, you are dangerous. I knew I might fall, I knew the risk of drifting through a corner in the rain. I was dressed appropriately, got no injuries, and no damage to the bike or my riding gear. Could have got hurt or caused damage - knew that. If I wanted to eliminate all risk I wouldn't ride at all.
well said, with bike crashes, its not if you crash, its when you crash,3 major things that are dangerous on motorcycles... overconfidence, underconfidence, and indecision...
I have picked up my 1000 lb Goldwing several times using the method. And, I am not a very big or strong guy. It is a good idea to put the bike in gear so the rear wheel is locked, that way it helps keep the bike from slipping.
@therising1 It really wouldn't matter bags or no bags.. the R series BMW's jugs touch the ground before the bags do, BUT her technique will work with ANY bike.
look for a gal named skirt (she has been doing that demo for years at events), she is about 115 lbs tops and maybe 5'5"?, that system works and has been around forever it;s nothing new to back up and pick up a bike like that
