Several years ago I took a Shakespeare class at St. Aldate's college and attended this church for Mass on Sundays. Lovely place with deep associations to Newman and Hopkins. Bishop Hollis (sp.?) was cordial but stern. I just loved Oxford. Why am I still a teacher in Long Beach California!?
Yeah this is the Oratory Church in oxford known as u say St Aloysius. The pipe Organ is fairly new as this church was using a toaster for a long time which isn't meant to be offensive another expression for a electronic organ. I love playing the Widor on Xmas morning and Easter it adds that soleminty to the mass.
I realize that I wasn't filming the organ - I was unable to see the loft from where I was. I am also sorry I was unable to capture the magnificence of the organ. I could feel it in every fibre of my being. It was so, so lovely.
It was a Novus Ordo (New Order) Roman Rite Mass, and the Mass was over at this point. The organist began this peice after the final hymn, as people were leaving.
Yep, just realised - was typing quickly and not really noticing what I was typing. If any of you want a decent recording of it I'd advise Colin Walsh's new(ish) CD of Widor's symphonies numbers 5 & 6

@0276boy - interesting! I was in Oxford for a Shakespeare course, too. I absolutely loved it. I was there in 2006. When were you?

Organs are too scary for churches!

@RealEros1 It's the old gothic churches we must blame for organs seeming scary to us. ; )

There is no substitute for a real pipe organ! The electronic abomination I have to stomach every Sunday needs to be replaced.

@CantorNikolaos Yeah indeed, and as they say "Butter doesn't claim to taste like margarine."

Great altar, but as for the organ; the pedal reeds were out of tune.

Which isn't that surprising, since pedal reeds are first to fo out of tune

What's "amazing" about the organ?
Actually it's a high altar, not an organ in the picture....

People are usually reverant and quiet (like they should) at TLMs so they would be no talking.
dacatholicbandorgan 2 years ago
This looks like a traditional latin mass, but why do I hear talking?

It's the Toccata from Widor's Symphony N0.6, which is often just referred to as Widor's Toccata.
