  • Toccata from Widor's 5th Symphony

  • @0276boy - interesting! I was in Oxford for a Shakespeare course, too. I absolutely loved it. I was there in 2006. When were you?

  • Several years ago I took a Shakespeare class at St. Aldate's college and attended this church for Mass on Sundays. Lovely place with deep associations to Newman and Hopkins. Bishop Hollis (sp.?) was cordial but stern. I just loved Oxford. Why am I still a teacher in Long Beach California!?

  • The guy who built this organ is a good friend of mine =)

  • Ah thats a piece by Widor, very nice!

  • Organs are too scary for churches!

  • @RealEros1 It's the old gothic churches we must blame for organs seeming scary to us. ; )

  • looks like a frati und co. church organ from berlin.

  • Ahh Widor Toccata!

  • Ahh Widor Toccata!

  • There is no substitute for a real pipe organ! The electronic abomination I have to stomach every Sunday needs to be replaced.

  • @CantorNikolaos Yeah indeed, and as they say "Butter doesn't claim to taste like margarine."

  • your right!! coolies

  • Great altar, but as for the organ; the pedal reeds were out of tune.

  • Which isn't that surprising, since pedal reeds are first to fo out of tune

  • Yeah this is the Oratory Church in oxford known as u say St Aloysius. The pipe Organ is fairly new as this church was using a toaster for a long time which isn't meant to be offensive another expression for a electronic organ. I love playing the Widor on Xmas morning and Easter it adds that soleminty to the mass.

  • so beautiful !

  • This is the Toccata out of the 5th organ symphony from Charles Marie Widor.

Just in case someone wants to know this ...

  • Hi,

if you wanna know what piece it was the organist played: The "Toccata" our of the 5th organ symphony from Charles Marie Widor.

Its an amazing piece of music ...

    Hopfenmeister

  • What's "amazing" about the organ?

Actually it's a high altar, not an organ in the picture....

  • I realize that I wasn't filming the organ - I was unable to see the loft from where I was. I am also sorry I was unable to capture the magnificence of the organ. I could feel it in every fibre of my being. It was so, so lovely.

  • Too SHORT!!!

  • People are usually reverant and quiet (like they should) at TLMs so they would be no talking.

  • This looks like a traditional latin mass, but why do I hear talking?

  • It was a Novus Ordo (New Order) Roman Rite Mass, and the Mass was over at this point. The organist began this peice after the final hymn, as people were leaving.

  • Finale de la 5e symphonie de Charles-Marie Widor.

  • Does anyone know the name of the piece? I'd love to play it :)

  • It's the Toccata from Widor's Symphony N0.6, which is often just referred to as Widor's Toccata.

  • I should've known! Thanks a lot!

  • Sorry, It's form Widor's Symphony No. 5.

  • Yep, just realised - was typing quickly and not really noticing what I was typing. If any of you want a decent recording of it I'd advise Colin Walsh's new(ish) CD of Widor's symphonies numbers 5 & 6

  • Lovely -t hanks for the recommendation!

  • Comment removed

  • you film during Mass, as a celebrant tsk tsk tsk...

  • haha - it was after Mass, actually.

  • ;-) haha glad to see, in any case a lovely vid.

  • Actually, it is not Church of England - it's Roman Catholic.

  • Why only 21 seconds?

  • Running out of memory space on a 2 week trip... *sigh*

  • This music is the toccata from widors symphony number 5

  • the music is: tocata by organ concerto nº5 (Widor) ... ;)

  • ya that sounds right

  • uhmm ... tidentin mass =)

  • Nope - Novus Ordo (modern) Roman Catholic Mass - in a very classic old church. Beautiful!

  • ohhh Novus Ordo =\
