  • GREAT song, but a disturbing image at 1:59....what are THEY doing there???

  • Nothing will ever be better than this song...

  • awesome! check out my channel for more doo wop, rare stuff!

  • thumbs up if turrets sent u here

  • However, I am grateful we met and had discussions. I enjoyed our conversations,. Btw...I have the same champagne tastes when it comes to movies: 40s 50s 6s 70s I am a buff.

  • I am not the Jay and the Americans afficiando that you are. My thing is to put together songs like Cara Mia from any source. Great songs that endure the test of time. I have cassettes full (yes cassettes) and go to the beach with my boom box. I lay out in an area where no one is. Spreadout the stereo speakers 10 feet. Everytime...I mean everytime I do it within 30 minutes I have a dozen people around me bopping to my music. Mainly 60-70s but anything from any era that meets that standard.

  • ah ha. Google Jay and The Americans via Wikipedia. There are 3 "Jays". The one I went to high school with (acually my graduating year 1971) Jay Reincke is the third Jay. Jay Black went bankrupt due to gambling debts according to Wiki and sold the name Jay and the Americans in bankruptcy. Jay Reincke performs today as Jay of Jay and the Americans.

  • @Michael93406 I'm pretty " up " on Jay Black and I knew you had to have your facts wrong. I've been a fan for 50 years, and I know people that do know him, from the early days.. Indeed there are 3 Jay's. #1 is Jay Traynor..left the group very early on and then came MY Jay...#2 is Jay Black ( David Blatt ), who lead them to their great success and all their hits. Now there is #3 Jay Reicke, who is touring with 3 of the original back up singers. It's just NOT the same without David.

  • @DFbighair

Not to denigrate the other two, but David Blatt is very fine, what a voice!..

  • Jay Reincke. This is strange. I am not sure of my facts. I understand there was an original Jay for that group which are the names you stated and then there is the Jay who performs with them now which is Jay Reincke the name he is on FB now. I think there are 2 Jays. The original and his successor. If you find out more let me know, but Jay Reincke is definitely on FB and definitely performs today with Jay and the Americans.

  • I would love to say that I knew him, but I did not. He was about 15 years earlier than me. However, he attends reunions amd we do speak on Facebook. I met him once and he was a very nice man...quite a gentleman.

  • @Michael93406 Jay is on Facebook? Can you tell us how to find him on there...Hummingbird and I are also on there.....what name is it under...Jay Black or David Blatt...I've looked on there for him, with no luck...doesn't seem like it would be so easy to just find him on there....I've heard that he's not terribly computer savvy...Dawn

  • I went to the same high school as Jay. He is a real nice guy besides being a great singer.

  • @Michael93406

That is awesome that you knew Jay in the "early years". How well did you know him? Care to share any good stories with DFbighair, Agrace39, and myself?

  • Hey tattoofu u r right, but so is meezerlover. Today's "music" does not hold a candle to the beginnings of rock n roll--not even close.

  • @Michael93406: Thanks for being on my side. I've seen every classic singer/group, so I know what I am talking about. Even took a look at modern stuff but it is just no good. So, all I have to say to my "detractor" is FU.

  • hummingbird058, I did get two emails from you. I responded to the second one first, using my att reply, then noticed this says it's a noreply. Still uncertain how to send messages without posting to all.

  • also seen on TV still great music. floods the mind with Memories

  • jay is just so good ,no one could get near him on this song how ever if you love this song listen to carlos otera 's version in spanish, its so different ,yet so damn good as well

  • @dgenr88 I too enjoy Carlos Otero's version...I found it by accident. I literally have looked at every video of every person or group that has ever tried to sing Cara Mia. NO ONE compares to Jay Black, no one should even try. However, I concede that Mr Otero's Spanish version is remarkable, and I made a comment to that effect on his YouTube video. Although Jay Black has an operatic style. Mr.Otero is actually a trained opera singer, with a very different delivery of the song...

  • @tattoofu Thank you, tattoofu!Take it from thisOldMan who's old as Rock-n-Roll and scratchier than these records----yes, there is a lot of bad music these days, but there is also some amazing stuff(likeGrizzlyBear). And while it is easy to sit hear and go on&on about the greatness of, say,Chuck Berry&Bowie&Dylan&the Clash&JamesBrown&the Beach Boys&Joni&Neil Young.....ahh, gotta stop somewhere---there was also anAWFUL lot of shit.NotALLf theOldies areGolden&notALLof the new music stinks.

  • A truly great singer .. He sang at most of John Gottis weddings and parties. In fact they were close friends. John Gotti was crazy about Jays singing . He just loved it.

  • Jay Traynor only had one hit with "She Cried" and left the group. Thank God that David Blatt decided to become Jay Black...and the rest is history....Jay Black had the most awesome voice in Rock and Roll history...At 72 he can still hit these same unbeliveable notes. WOW...Just slightly ahead of the Big O...

  • The one and only Jay Black !

  • @DFbighair Or as we know his real name, David Blatt. Still sings this great.

  • I have a question is this guy who is singing is Jay Black or Jay Traynor ?

  • @Marijus112 ....Jay Black of course..

  • @tattoofu

Everyone needs to stop giving a fuck about the comments section; it's where unimportant feedback from viewers and between viewers is exchanged: the only exception is when the uploader gives a shit about the filth that the viewers spew everywhere. The only reason it exists is for the superficial benefit of those who use it, otherwise they would be torn between containing their extremely important opinions or busting their ass writing a message to the uploader.

  • totally agree justin beever should go back to his tree lol

  • @0:42 beast note!!

  • this is like neurotoxin only worse

  • absolut great...

  • A brilliant version

  • Jay Black is a great singer. I was surprised to see the lead singer of the "Reflections" do this song just as well.

  • @999YORK ...I looked that up...not bad, but not as good.....This song belongs to Jay Black...

  • did anyone else know this song from portal 2?

  • This song will forever be one of my favorites. Wish I could sing like that.Wow!!!!

  • Oh these guys did a cover of that turret band, nice...

  • the incomparable Jay Black...

  • Jay Black I love this song! I'am 57 you are in my heart.

  • Classic...one of the very best performances ever. Love those dancers. Wish they would show them more.

  • ChiroQuacker, you are indeed an idiot..and a bigot too it seems..

  • @ChiroQuacker You're an idiot.

  • I've seen Jay and the Americans in concert twice. This song sends chills up my spine everytime I hear it, even more in person!!! Jay Black has one of the most powerful voices in the business!

  • Thumb up if you where looking for portal

  • Oh crap! I saw this when it first aired - talk about dating yourself.

  • Most difficult opening of any opening for the past 60 years...and Jay, of course, nails it!

  • Fantastic. Great music that will last till the end of time- THE GARAGE CHANNEL.

Can't say what's the best because it's all the best~!

  • Totally awesome!

  • damn we need guys with voices like this in today's music scene

  • saw them perform this song on PBS special AMAZING!!!!!

  • 8 Octaves this guy could hit... Incredible Great music.. Miss this kind of music . Todays stuff doesnt cut it for the most part

  • @macthe45guy ... He was the best at this early age mate!!!!! He was a East New York boy, and you really could not mock any of his music back then, as John Gotti, was a good friend of his and visa versa. LOL....That is the truth...cya...jb

  • @IceMage900 Yes he use to hang out on the lower East Side but he and his family comes from Brooklyn,N.Y.C. My cousin knew him from school in the Kings' Highway area of town.

  • My cousin lived right down the block from Jays' house growing up in Brooklyn.

  • @tjrxk7 Would your cousin be willing to share some of his/her stories about the "early years" of Jay Black (David) with myself and DFbighair? And anyone else who is interested of course. We converse with someone else who hung around with Jay back then via personal emails and would really love to hear other stories.

  • @hummingbird058 My cousin now lives in Arizona. I spoke to him about what you said and directed him to this page but he did'nt seem interested. He did say he'd think about it. That's the best I can do.

  • @tjrxk7 You are very sweet to try for us. Thank you very much.

  • @tjrxk7 Oh yeah...we would love to hear anything about Jay ( David ) from the early years..

  • Pretty sad that I have former WWF Wrestler Nikolai Volkoff singing this song on the very first Wrestling Album. Even cooler I have it on vinyl.

  • Wow this is music, I love oldies and I must say he's a great singer thank you for uploading this

  • Sweet Strong pipes

crazy thinking we could sing along back then their songs filled the dance halls

    thanks for the memorries..

  • @HisbrotherJames You wont see these so called "Star Mills' like American Idol and XFactor produce this kind of talent!

  • I'm so glad I was introduced to this when I was little...

  • "Cara Mia" -- that's Spanish for "I no got your hubcaps, mang."

  • WOW !!!!!!!

  • Jay Black,...the ''pop'' Mario Lanza! Excellent!

  • all those pathetic wenches trying to get the attention

  • @huntersingle Yea...I think I heard your mother in the crowd.

  • I forgot how good this guy could sing.

  • LOVE HIM, SURE BRINGS BACK MEMORIES!

  • ONE OF THE GREATEST VOICES OF ROCK AND ROLE

  • is he a Kennedy?

  • @onebrickwall Nope...but sure looked like Bobby Kennedy back then didn't he...

  • One of the greatest hits of Jay Black and the Americans. I recall the time I attended College when hearing this. Too bad today's singers don't have a voice even remotely approaching that of Jay Black. Jorge Mario

  • There will only ever be one JAY AND THE AMERICANS and that is with this one singing JAY BLACK,the others are imposters living off this fantastic voice,as good as ROY ORBISON in quality, simply unbeatable and uncopyable, truly original.

  • Well we know that 70 people are the biggest losers in the world!

  • I love this song and Jay's voice! Doesn't get any better

  • one of the best intros to a song

  • I'm not real keen on this tune. Cara Mia - yuck. Too schmaltzy. Cotto Salami, Aye!

  • @MattWhatsGoinOn

    As the saying goes,

    To each his own".

  • Cara Mia is my favorite song so I bought it on iTunes. Then i found the same song here and think its waaaaay better!

  • I forgot about this song but my parents saw him in concert last night and I remembered how good this song sounded, back in the day.

  • what a voice..if he expects to win america's idol he better get baggy pants, grab his crotch, and yodel alot more like the niggers do or he gonna be voted out

  • @HandShock That is pretty ugly.

  • @HandShock You racist son of a bitch

  • Cara Mia builds until it overwhelms you, kind of like "Bolero".

  • @DFbighair ;) and how many of us would like to know That? Know what? I think I could be a stalker where he's concerned.

  • D@mn its time to bring back them Hot Go Go Girls Wooo Hooooooooo

  • I admired Jay's voice - still do. But he had what I was told by opera enthusiasts -- an under trained operatic voice. He could hit high notes well & hold them - but in between passages as at the :59-1:00 he seriously had flaws. I always defended Jay in the 60's as being great. He is -- for "Cara Mia." But not for any other consideration. The opera expert said Elvis & Roy Orbison had a more perfect sustain than Jay. I still like "Cara Mia." Elvis once said he liked Jay's "Cara Mia." I agree.

  • @lastrada52

    Interesting discourse.

I am not musically educated, but, in this instance, (not to dismiss, nor make argument), what I hear, feel, and see, I like.

    As in this example.

  • @twinstu50 - That's the bottomline Twinstu50 -- what you hear, feel & see. Too bad many people on YouTube don't seem to understand that right. I listed reasons why Jay had some faults -- but in the end I loved "Cara Mia," "Come A Little Bit Closer," and several others by Jay including a Roy Orbison cover "Running Scared." I guess Jay accomplished what he set out to do despite what purists had to say. It would have been nice to see a rock singer actually get a nod from an opera lover though.

  • this dude had a fuckin mouthpiece

  • @WhenYourStrange93 ...and still does, 46 years later....

  • @DFbighair word

  • The magnificent Jay Black. One of the greatest singing voices ever.

  • a powerful song still 42 years on...

  • @wilcarr1 Damn, I only hope so....... :)

  • Today is Jay's Birthday !! Happy 73rd !!

    You are loved...

    ...Dawn

  • Happy 73rd Jay many more

  • Wish we could have seen more shots of the go go girls.

  • What a Voice !!! I've always enjoyed music of all types through the years but this song has remained one of my favorites. I do know Cara Mia the song was around for years when Jay Black recorded it but it's almost as if the song was written to showcase his voice. Powerfull, wonderful recording ... I still hear it played on the radio now and then and the volume goes up ... Thanks for posting the video

  • Jay Black was amazing at his best. No one, and I mean, no one could equal the grace and power in his voice. Long after our generation is forgotten, people will be sitting around, if there is anything left to sit on, and enjoying his music. Take Care, Buddy.

  • That's it. I'm stocking up on Brylcreem, sweaters and khakis. Dude probably had more female companionship than a sane man could handle.

  • @flyingmerkel6 don't forget the weejuns..........

  • @mfsanders Oh crap. I forgot my Weejuns. That's been the problem........

  • @flyingmerkel6 who cares about your damn weejuns

  • @flyingmerkel6 aint that the truth lol

  • @flyingmerkel6 All You Need Now Is To Get Down The Voice And Forgetta Boutit! You Could Serenade Any Lady Into The Bedroom Lol

  • @flyingmerkel6

    You may be right.

  • @flyingmerkel6 yep I did

  • @flyingmerkel6: Dude is now 72 y.o. and still hits every damn note. Now that is TALENT!!! Too bad no modern idiots have any talent. Lady Gaga is a whore and ugly to boot; Justin Booger can't sing.

  • @meezerlover1 Lady Gaga can sing with the best of them. And has, actually. The sad part is that people just like you are either too ignorant or too busy flaming on the music scene today to notice these kinds of gems. That person is what I call an idiot.

  • @meezerlover1 ..but Gaga's nose...

  • @meezerlover1 he sang it on pbs just like he sang it here

  • @meezerlover1 your an idiot I agree that lady gaga's style isn't necessarily desirable but when it comes to raw talent she's got it. justin bieber can burn slowly to death covered in biting ants for all I care. but really the style has changed but the talent is still there underneath just gotta look past the shit thats covering it

  • love this song always, he sings it with passion and a great voice

  • aw I LOVE his voice. Thanks so much for posting. He is WAY to good for this band

  • Still BRILLIANT!.

    Unsurpassable!.

  • People, life is short...i see him now starting to fade away and seeing him in his youth in the 1960's and now today barely hanging on to life now...errr wish our lifespan is expanded to the hundreds of years. I prefer this decade to 1980's timeframe before condescending/disgusting rap and most hip hop culture took over since 1990's onward.

  • @pgs5719 I saw him too on the PBS oldies show. Yes, he's gotten feeble, but he STILL hit that note! I agree with all you wrote!

  • @pgs5719 I'm 14 my grandfather has passed never got to meet him, and my mom was talking about this song, and how my grandfather (her father) used to sing this around her house. So I went out and found this and she was so happy, I don't know why I'm telling you this. Just saying. I wished I lived in the 50's, though my skin color is brown and my brother said the people in the 50's wouldn't be nice to me :P

  • So you prefer your generation to the one it produced? I guess none of you guys had any hand in how we turned out then.

  • dang, I always thought this was Roy Orbison!

  • what a voice, fallsetto meets tenor

  • what a voice

  • love this song !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • and by "he" I mean Jay Black

  • man, i remember the first time i heard cara mia when it came out; i was in awe, a feeling like i was hearing god. music like this saved my soul...

  • Why does't everyone like the "oldies"? I think they are Great!!! Today's music stinks!!!

  • @52punkie as someone who remembers when songs like this came out, i think there's some good music out there; maybe we just have to search a little harder to find it

  • @desirefirst I agree...But it's few and far between.

  • Crawwurm, your parents are doing a great job. You rock! Welcome to my generation

  • Alas, my beloved has not returned to me. I am saddened.

  • Thanks for posting this footage...

  • Opera singers don't use falsetto (as most of the high notes in this song are falsetto), but he was still great.

  • @bigdjindustriez You're right. But singing falsetto was very much the style back then. Not only Jay, but also Franki Valli, and Lou Christie to name a few. I assume not everybody can do it.

  • Just gone from The Righteous Brothers to this! Voices that thrill. i didnt know these guys- WOW. I exhalt!

  • went i watch this old video it take me way back.

  • A New Jersey "Oldies" performance at a social club....the "cover band" kicks off this tune, and suddenly all the 60-something men I am with begin singing at the top of their lungs. Goosebumps! All their street corner singing chops are aflame and darmn they sound soooooo great. I sat in the darkened room, letting their voices fill me up -- Suddenly we were all teens once more. Never stop singing, guys. I love you.

  • Jay Black and Gene Pitney were amazing talents who will never be forgotten. Kudos to the 14yo who loves 60's music. It was a great time and great music.

  • @SadieCo149: OMG, I could send you a list of the really talented singers from back then, but it would be pages long. Seriously, I agree with you, but add Dion to your list. I first saw him and the Belmonts in 1958. I was 11 y.o. I saw him backstage afterwards and he smiled at me. OMG, I took one look and fell in love with his .....eyebrows (seriously) and I have loved the voice, the music and the man ever since. Catch him sometime, he is still performing.

  • I was born into the wrong time...

  • Jay Black, man...what a singer! He sounds like he needs to be in the opera or something, on this tune lol.

  • @58936865233 He studied opera...

  • @ricksand2 No, he didn't study opera. In fact, he had no formal vocal training at all. In Jay's own words " I just woke up one day and I could sing like that..I don't even warm up..I just drive to the show and go inside and sing ". Now even though he didn't STUDY opera, he did study " opera singers ". He admits to being especially captivated by and influenced by Mario Lanza and Ezio Pinza ( who sang " Some Enchanted Evening " in South Pacific, which is why he wanted to record that song )

  • @DFbighair thats not what he told the audience at the concert I attended...he said that he began studying opera...where that led....Only in America....

  • @ricksand2 He didn't take voice lessons. I've heard him say this in several radio interviews. He did study opera, in the sense that he studied the singers themselves, appreciated & emulated their techniques, and as he recognized that he also posessed these natural born skills, he chose material to showcase his talent, but he never took voice lessons to enhance his natural operatic sound, style or skill. I have a friend that has been with Jay ( David ) since childhood..this comes from him...

  • @ricksand2 Really! Did not know that. Explains a lot, though!

  • what a f****** voice! The 60s rock!

    rockinghamsixtiesdotcom

  • There is no good songs anymore, Thank God I grew up in the 60s. The songs today STINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @bronxe187th Lucky you. Haha.

  • THE VOICE!!!!!....wow!......heard him a short while ago and he STILL has the RANGE!!!...incredible!

  • THE VOICE!!!!!....wow!

  • I'm a portal fan. Reason why I'm here. But...

    Son I am not disappoint.

  • portal brought me here, and i am NOT dissapointed

  • I was looking for the turret opera but yeah this is awesome :)

  • Wonderful song!!!!!!!!

  • music has really devovled over such a short span, 300 years ago you could be sitting in a concert hall listeng to toccata and fugue and now you stand in a crowd of pot heads and "gangsters" i love anything from classical to late 80s up until now its the same stuff diffrent day. by the way im 13

  • The opening it is just wonderful

  • It had me up until those go go girls started prancing in the foreground 1:56 , what the hell was that..? Ha ha

  • @jdollinter Peroid dance.45 years from now 2011 dance will look just as dumb. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose!

  • I am a 58 yr old mother of three grown sons and im proud to say that with the huge music collection i have, i have brought up all my sons with all the greatest music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. And yes, also some music from today. There are some really good new bands out there and i do believe that rock n roll will make a big comeback soon! Lots of kids i know are getting tired of the pop music and are seeking out the oldies for some good music.

  • Groovy!

  • What's truly impressive about Jay Black is that even years later, he still has that great voice and range. I had the privilege of seeing him perform this song live at a "Moondog Coronation Ball" concert in Cleveland to commemorate Alan Freed's famed rock and roll concerts of the 1950s. His vocal accuracy was right on the money and the fans there just loved it. Thanks, Jay, for a great show.

  • Fantastic song!

  • i was born in 77 and i have to say that i lived though the some crappy music. now it's worst then ever. my parents raised me to listen to the most awesome music. give me 50,60,and 70's music....i am now teaching my 2 year old to love the wonderful music of the past when music had meaning, depth, and heart.

  • Steve is right on. More great music than you could keep track of, unless you were tuend in 24/7.

  • very wonderful

  • this is reall msic

  • i saw Jay and the American's play a full show at the "rocket room" across from the greyhound station in DC back in 63. It was an afternoon show. Don't ask me why they were there, it's just the way it was then. I was taking a bus back to Pittsburgh from flight school and met these girls who were going home (by bus) from working all summer at Lake George, NY. We danced our asses off and sweated in the Sep. heat of DC. Jay and the guys did a great job to a nearly empty house, never forget it!

  • @dammons100 Lucky you. I wish I had that experience

  • what a voice, put him up there with ROY and Gene pitney

  • What a voice. Just Amazing..

  • Why the music nowadays can't be as good as Cara Mia or other greatest hits of that era?

  • WOW....I was 15 and so in love with Jay! Amazing I can look back now and really appreciate the music. Thanks for posting!

  • great songs from the 60's
