  • does every 5 shell stitches mean 27 chain?

  • @Shaheeda4ever 2 chains - 1 shell. The written instructions are posted in the video details. You can also visit the link to my crochet blog, which will provide a symbol chart.

  • Hi Theresa I'm woking on a shell stitch baby blanket and was wondering how I can add a border to it, and I saw you have a video on how to straighten out a shell stitch should I use that too so the border is even all the way around? Like so it wont be ruffledmon top because of the shell stitch?

  • I have been crocheting for less than a month, I made a baby blanket from this video, booties and a hat from your other video's for my soon to be grandson. I have friends who can not believe I can crochet these things so soon! I have one who has been crocheting for 12 years, says she had trouble with this pattern, I sent her your link :-)

  • @jennleaf08 Great to hear you have been learning so quickly.

  • Great tut - I've had my troubles with this pattern, but your video really helped. Thanks! :-)

  • @BlazerRose You are welcome.

  • I have used your videos to teach myself to crochet and you are an amazing teacher. I have a quick question though, how would I go about making a straight edge once I'm finished with my piece?

  • @GrinningStar Work a chain between each peak, which will straighten off the edge. Upon completion, work an edging of single crochet.

  • I was wondering if it was possible to do different designs, like a basket weave pattern or DC pattern, along with this shell method, and at the same time for the blanket to come out proportional. I started off w/ the shell, but if I wanted to have rows of DC how could I accomplish it? BTW I love your videos!

  • So, I used the 5.5 size hook and the 4ply yarn. I tried chaining the suggested number of chains, but it seemed too short so I added about ten-ish more? It still seems like the blanket isn't long enough. I'm trying to decide if I make it longer to compensate for the width, but I was wondering if, with the edging, can I do a second row of edging? Would that work?

  • I loved the stitch...how to work it in the round and do increases and decreases for a hat or beret??

  • I have finished the baby blanket but I want to do some type of border...like a wavy edging. I tried to do a straight edge and it looks all wrong..so I undid it. Any suggestions?

  • @KatieK0605 What I would suggest is that you carry the pattern to the 3 remaining edges to form your border, using the pattern of the afghan. When you get to the corners, you will want to work them full so they do not pucker.

  • Thank you for the tutorial,so clear, and easy to understand as always.

  • @Sukalya1 You are welcome! I am glad that you like it. Please share a picture when you complete your project.

  • THANK YOU!! I've been trying to find a pattern I like for the baby blanket I want to make for my sister's first kid. Hahah This one is great.

  • @reneeanalee I appreciate it, thank you!

  • thankyou for the video , I kept going and turned my swatch into a child's scarf

  • @kithrakat You are welcome! :)

  • @RUSSIAlovesBROOKLYN Thank you

  • It starts to curl into a ring, sort of.

  • lovely design. good quality. thanks 4 uploading

  • @mslaxmi18 you are welcome! :)

  • I don't get it.... How come everything I work on curls in on itself? Forgive me, I'm new at this.

  • @SammyDarling97 What do you mean by it curls in on itself?

  • I love your crocheting videos, they are so helpful, thank you. I was wondering can you make a video on how to make the edging in this video, or at least explain how to do it? I made a blanket similar to it using the shell stitch technique but I'm not sure how to make the edging, please help. youtube.com/watch?v=h1reMKQYQMY&feature=related

  • I'm new to crocheting. It is very calming to me even thou I'm very slow at it. I've been wanting to learn how to do this stitch and with your videos I will be learning it and a lot more. Thank you so much for sharing..

  • You make it look so easy

  • Thank you for your great chochet video. I am a beginner but you make it easy to learn.Thank you so much for sharing.

  • If I'm not mistaken, this is the brick stitch

  • @w3irdheart As with most crochet stitches, they may be known by several different names.

  • gostaeia de aprender mais, gostei

  • I am wondering if I could do the sngle croche foundation row for making a blanket with this stitch ?

I am having difficulty keeping the work stright ....after I finished 5 rows of a practice the "tail" of my first row wasn't sitting where it should be but the rest looked fine any suggestions are apprciated TY and KEEP STITCHIN'

  • @corksmom You can do the foundation single crochet instead

  • I am a beginner Teresa and would like to no what kind of yarn are you using in this video if you can remember that is! Lol

  • @razberyX10 It is 4 ply yarn but I do not remember the colors

  • I'm working on a wash cloth with that stitch pattern. The yarn

is a multi colored cotton. It's really going to be pretty.

Thank you from last year when I learned it. I just had to look

again to make sure I'm doing it right.

  • I love this pattern!

  • Slanted Shell Afghan - great for an afghan

  • @tjw1963 Hi Teresa

I really love this pattern and I'm going to make a baby afghan for my new grandbaby. I would like to do this in all pink with a black border. How could I do this?

    ~~Dawn

  • Hi Teresa,

I really like doing this stitch. I'm making an afghan for my new grandbaby but would like to do this stitch and have a black border. How would you add a border to this project?

    Thanks a bunch,

    ~~Dawn

  • Teresa, you have taught me to crochet where others have not. I have looked at all your videos and they are the greatest. I have just recently finished my 11th blanket that I have made for my grandchildren using the techniques for a variety of stitches. Thank you so very much.

  • Hi teresa

do u have any videos on how to make a baby blanket?

i would highly appreciate it :D

  • @topazio This is a video that shows how to make a baby blanket. You will make a chain of approximately 150 and then make the stitch across the row and each row after. Continue for the length.

  • Good mornins Teresa, just wanted to tell you i love your tutorials they have been of a lot of help to me case i have learned more stitches, thank you very much for making our lives easier. I have a question do you have a tutorial on how to crochet a scoodie? Hope you can help me and thank you again.

  • @ifirmafa18 I'm sorry but I am not familiar with a scoodie.

  • @tjw1963 I'm sorry Teresa, maybe i didnt explain my self properly a scoodie is a scarf with a hood all in one piece.

  • @tjw1963 I am guessing a scarf with a hood?? (scarf hoodie?)

  • i had to take 22 rows aprt, some how my end of the rows where not even

  • @dlremy1962 Which end was wider, the starting row or the row where you ripped? Before you took them apart, did you count to see if you had the same amount of stitches that you started with?

  • Thank you so much lady Teresa, I'm having fun learning all of your scarf patterns, you make it abvious and easier than it looks, specially this pattern which I found in the magazine I got from your givaway the past monthes, it was just too complicated for me to follow from the pattern there! Thanks again <3

  • I have learned so much from your wonderful videos. I would like to know how many stitches I would cast on for a large sized afghan. Thank you!

  • @silentwriterofpa I would suggest about a chain of 200-240. You may end up with extra chain. If you do, just sew it in between the stitches. I have a video that shows how to take care of the extra chain and never recommend that a person rip because of extra chain.

  • Hi Theresa, I really enjoy your videos, but I wanted to let you know that this paticular video does not load properly. thanks and keep up the good work.

  • @MileHighCrochet It is playing for me. If you look to the bottom of the video player, you can select the playback settings. 240, 360, 480 Give that a try and see if it works.

  • I did it i did it!!!!!!!!!!!! and i'm left handed. i LOVE your videos you have done what several right handed people haven't been able to do and that is teach me even watching the right handed videos i just get it Thank you so much. word can't explain the joy you have brought me. Crocheting was getting very frustating till i found your videos keep it up this is great.

  • @mambirdw4 Great to hear that you got it! I do have a lot of left hand videos posted. I thought I had converted this one.

  • This is such a pretty stitch! I absolutely love all of your videos. I've only been crocheting for about 5 years and your instructional videos are very easy for me to follow and understand. Thank you! I'm going to try a scarf with this stitch.

I was wondering what your view on bamboo crochet hooks is? Have you ever used them before?

Thanks for the instruction and the tips! Your work is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing! :)

  • @xXhottieonthepottyXx I have never used bamboo crochet hooks. Thank you for the comment.

  • This is impossible to follow!

  • Actually I want to start making a shawl so need to chain more than 25 to make it broader.

Anyway I came across entrelac crochet and it really fascinated me, will appreciate help from you to learn the pattern.

    Thanks

  • I am knew at this art and need to know which needle you are using in this project, please!

  • @extremereasons Hello, I'm not Teresa, but I'm sure she won't mind if I butt in. I know she'll get back to you too, but in the meantime.... Teresa is using an "I" hook for this project. This way you can get started on your project. Happy Crocheting!

  • @kk37128 You are welcome to contribute to comments at any time, thank you! :)

  • Can you teach some plaids patterns in afgans or baby poncho.

Your videos are easy to grasp.

    Thanks

  • @kk37128 I removed my comment because it was sent to the wrong person. have since re-posted.

  • Absolutely perfect Teresa. Out of all the crochet videos I have seen, yours' are by far the most instructional. I have never had a problem with learning any new stitch from you. I am an avid crocheter for 30 years now and still have trouble deciphering written patterns. Keep up the great work!!! :)

  • @silverskn17 I appreciate the comment, thank you!

  • Teresa, you are a miracle in my life. You will truly be blessed for the help you provide to so many. My husband & step-son are both avid hunters. I have crocheted them both camo beanie hats which they love & I would like to whip up scarves for them in the same camo yarn for Christmas, but don't think a pattern would show, would it? Is it best to just DC all the way thru? I would also like it to be soft. I await your help with bated breath. Regards, Karen

  • @kk37128 I will also welcome anyone's input if they know of a masculine pattern that would work with a multi-color yarn. Thanks for your help in advance, which I desperately need in time for Christmas.

  • @silverskn17 30 years, huh? So glad that there is someone else with that many years crocheting and can't decipher written patterns. I am a beginner, starting late last year, and patterns are so confusing, I just don't get them. thank-goodness for youtube!

  • @diviajo Each author is going to have their interpretation on how they write the instructions.

  • Is there a way to straighten out the edge if I wanted to add another border?

  • this is great. i've been crocheting for over 35 years and taught my daughters when they were young. my youngest lives in canada and i live in florida, and she wanted me to walk her through how to begin a project on the telephone, but now i'm going to recommend this site to her. thanks

  • @alysmiamigata You are welcome! I appreciate the comment! :)

  • Teresa, you are an absolute God-send for those of us who love to crochet and learn new stitches but struggle to read the 'gobbly gook' they post as patterns - thank you so very, very much for your amazing videos. I wish major yarn companies would hire you to teach their free patterns - I would definitely purchase their yarn to make the patterns if I could follow your videos instead of decoding the written patterns. (hint hint, nudge nudge!) Thank you - keep on teaching and posting! Kim

  • @tdkchapman3 I would love to crochet some of the patterns from the yarn companies(especially doily's) if they were to grant permission.

  • I think you make it very easy to learn!

  • @geriall1 Thank you. :)

  • Hey Teresa..I am a man that has crocheted since he was a child of 9....I am now 46 and I am useing this pattern to make my daughter a afghan....you made this so simple, it is totally unreal how quick I picked this up...you was a tremendous help to me, and I will be watching more of your videos....thanks again....Robert

  • @taterboy1964 I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • Thank you for this...I just picked up a baby blanket with this stitch that I started several years ago before we moved...for the life of me, couldn't find the pattern. Now I can finish! Thanks so much. Great video!

  • Hi Teresa love all your designs and please post more new designs. Follow all the instructions on your video its very precise and very educational and a step by step instructions. Thank you very much.

  • @scorpion29569 Thank you.

  • I have been searching for this stitch all night and half of today! I've made many blankets using this stitch but I couldn't remember it for a baby boy blanket I"m starting today. I have a while/blue blended yarn that is going to look adorable. Thanks so much for having this stitch here on YouTube.com. You saved me today!

  • @belverbears You are welcome. :)

  • Hi Teresa i just wanted to let you know that i managed to teach myself crochet by using your videos and now have made several baby blankets for neighbours and friends. I just used this stitch as a border for my latest creation and it looks great. Thank you very much for all your help and i will continue to use your videos in the future xxx

  • @angelpup111 You are welcome. I appreciate the comment.

  • If you want to make a shawl in that stitch make a chain of 60

and and two more before you start. I'm using a pretty yarn

called Tweed Stripes and the color is called Mixed Berries

and another color to mix with is called Marble which is a

grey and silver mix. The Mixed berries is a red and burgandy

    mix. It's really pretty.

  • You have helped me through some really tough times in my life. I found crochet, and you, later than some, but I LOVE it. You were the only one able to teach me. Thank you for that and keep up the good work. BTW i am making a "towel" out of this stitch to give as a housewarming gift. She is gonna flip.

  • @apexseptic I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • Really great instructions. I really appreciate the way you demostrate how to count the chain stitches to achieve the shells. Thanks so much, you have helped me so many times with stitches.

  • I have a shawl that I couldn't figure out what stitch pattern it was but I am sure this is it!!!! Thank you for sharing! Very cool stitch!

  • @Carleta3021 You are welcome. :)

  • Finally, I found someone who can teach me this stitch. It is so easy to follow. Thank you so much. I am so relieved. I can start complicated patterns now.

  • @javajunkie101 Thank you.

  • I have kind of a silly question but I'm going to ask it anyway. I am making a baby afgahn. I want to use the edging. Do I use the edging only when I'm finished with the afgahn or do I start stitching around in circles?

  • Thanks so much for your wonderful teaching. I'm such a beginner and this is going to be my next "plunge" to try a hard pattern. It's very pretty and your teaching is so easy to follow. Thank you !!! I'll let you know how I do.

  • Thank you for your wonderful teaching. I am such a beginner and I think this pattern is so pretty. So this will be my first "plunge" on a harder pattern. I'll be working on it today. I'll let you know how I do. Thanks again.

  • @destresswithyoga Thank you. I do have a Facebook page if you would like to share a picture of your project when you are finished.

  • @SweetEdelweiss09 If you are making a throw to cover an adult, you may want to make a chain of 180 or so.

  • @tjw1963 Thank you

  • Your video is awesome. I am a beginner, you have helped me so much I am almost done with my baby blanket. Thank you, i don't know what i would have done without you.

  • @my3sons55 Thank you! :)

  • awesome! love ur videos.. thanks for takin ur time on makin these videos for all the beginners like me.. u clear all the questions i had buyin a book that had me breakin my head for two weeks... its a good thing we have youtube 2 :))

  • @tinkynani Thank you, I appreciate the comment.

  • ... rnd3: ch3, dc in joining(starting cluster made),*ch3, sc in next loop, ch3, holding back on hook the last loop of each dc, 2dc in next sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook(cluster made). Repeat from*around, ending with ch3.join to first dc. If I could just pass that rnd 3 I think I would be good to go, but it just doesn't look right..If you could help out, you would be awsome! Thank You

  • Hi, I am trying to crochet a pineapple tablecloth, and I got stuck pretty much in the beginning with the cluster stitch. Would you be able to explain how to do the following pattern..rnd1: ch1, sc in ring(ch2, sc in ring) 7 times; ch5, dtr in first sc to form a loop.(8lps)..rnd2: ch1, sc in loop just formed, ch7,(sc in next loop, ch7) 7 times; sl st in first sc...

  • Great crochet ideas, you have here in youtube!

  • I have not crocheted very long, but this was so easy to learn. I'm making the baby blanket now with white yarn. Its beautiful!! I want to make a bed spread. How many stitches would I need?

  • this stitch is fun thank you love it , its fast too

  • I really appreciated this video, you explained things well and went slowly. I know I can do this :) I used to be able to read instructions but I do so much better watching someone do it. Thank you...I'm going to replay this and grab some yarn and a hook.

    ~phoebe

  • I love your work! I'm a 54 year old disabled man, I learned crochet last year from my girlfriend and have been hooked on it since, making blankets for a pet rescue, and baby blankets for a hospital. Your videos have definitely helped me learn not just the stitches but new ways of looking at things, how to be more creative myself. I just finished a slanted shell pet blanket in honey and beige 4-ply and am now starting a baby blanket with 3-ply yarn in lilac and blue. Thanks for all of your help!

  • if i wanted to make a baby blanket how many yarns packages would i need total? and what matterial or brand would you reccommend, I could not find it on your website.

  • @hisgermansunshine I do not endorse any brand and like to let people choose from the many types of yarn available. An afghan can be worked with 3 or 4 ply yarn. I would estimate that 1631 yards would make a nice size baby afghan.

  • this video was very easy to follow. i've been crocheting for 15 years and i'm glad somebody started to make instructiona videos. your patterns are pretty and easy to do after watching the video.

  • Really good im gonna try this!!!!!

  • jThat pattern would make a wonderful washcloth crocheted with a

cotton yarn. I'm doing that now. Happy Earth day!

    methodistgirl

  • @methodistgirl Thank you.

  • Hi Teresa, when you switch colors there are two "tails" that hang off. Since a knot has been tied, is it safe to cut off the tails or is there another method of weaving the string into the pattern that's a little safer? Thank you!

  • @puurrrrr You will make sure that the yarn is knotted and secure. Then you will sew it is. If you were to cut it off, you will risk your yarn coming apart and unraveling. I will send you a video link on sewing in tails.

  • Im only just starting to crochet, this video is soo easy to follow, i love it but what changes to it do i have to make if i want to crochet a BIG adults blanket using to shell stitch?

  • @princess123655 the multiple is 5+2 so just crochet any multiple of 5 (ex. 40, 45, 50, etc.) then add 2 to the end.

  • Like the video. I have been crocheting for 20 plus years but nice to see different kinds too. You are really good with it.

  • @gailbailey1 Thank you, I appreciate the comment.

  • I've seen a pattern similiar to your slanted shell stitch. But it used a slip stitch, chain 2 and two double crochets into the same hole. Then the next stitch went into the space between the first and second double crochet. and it continued with the slip stitch, chain 2 and 2 double crochets. Have you done something similiar to this stitch before? If so what is it called? I'm having problems with the ends of the rows and how to start the next rows.

  • I have bought two video's from my craft stores. These videos are much more confusing that need be. Someone suggest your video's on YouTube. Oh my gosh, I have learn so much in the short time I have watched your videos than the hours I spent learning nothing on the store bought videos. You are a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your talents with the rest of us.

  • @1eticketride I appreciate the comment very much, thank you!

  • You sure have the talent for teaching. I have learned so much from you. Thank you so much!

  • Great video! Thank you!

  • I just noticed that I was using the same

colors but mine were more of a rose

    and a brighter green.

    methodistgirl

  • sorry i read the previous answers i'll try it.

    thanks,

  • Hello Teresa:

If I want to make a wider afghan do I add more chains by multiples of 5. is that right? I want to make a baby blanket with this stich.

    Thanks,

    God bless.

  • Sitting in Denmark ,66 years old and the first grandbaby coming.I love your videos and wish to sit beside you.Thank you,oh so difficult.

  • It would be a pleasure to set next to you. Thank you. Congratulations on the new baby!

  • Thank you so much for telling us what the pattern formula is (multi. of 5 + 2) so we can vary the size of the blanket.

  • Hi, I was wonder how many chains do I start with for a full size afghan? Thank you and I do love all you videos... :)

  • An adult size estimate would be 280-350 chains depending on the size you want to make.

  • Teresa, I just want to thank you so much for all your wonderful videos! They have really helped. I teach a crochet class at my sons elementary school twice a week and I always tell my students to watch your videos! ~ Marie

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • Hello Teresa, I am glad for all your videos .I always new how to do the stitch but never how to put anithing togheter... Thank to you now i know how to do some staff ... I was wondering if you can tell me how to make a poncho with the slanted shell stitch I like the pattern a lot. and thank you again.

  • Thanks Teresa for your great and easy-to-follow videos. Would you be able to provide instructions on how to add a scallop border to the baby afghan?

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you. I will keep the border in mind.

  • Thank you for allof your great crochet videos! I am a beginnger but you make it easy!

  • I appreciate the comment. :)

  • Excellent explanations to detail. As a beginner, this gives me everything I need to know in order to make baby afghan. Thanks!

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • you are the best!!!! Love rocking with you

  • I love your videos !!

If i were to do a full baby blanket about how many should i chain so i can start this stitch ? Adn since Im a beginner when i start a new row I just add one more chain correct ? Also do i need to flip the work to the other side for each new row ? Thanks

  • Also what hook would be the best for this I heard you say any would work for this stitch but which is the best ?

  • The size of the hook should relate to the size yarn you are using.

  • Thank you. You will do approximately 125-150 for a baby afghan. There are detailed written instructions with a symbol chart posted on my crochet blog. You will find the link under "More Info" next to my picture.
