@celconicuzn For sure. I was trying squat jerks today when I lifted and I just can't hit it. I can C&J about 200 (I'm not bragging, especially considering that is a horrible max for a 205 pound guy, just making my point) with a split jerk, but I could barely squat jerk 133. It's tricky to figure out.

I can overhead squat just fine, but when I try to jerk into an overhead squat my grip is too narrow. I find it awkward to have my hands really wide when I set up the jerk, so I'm forced to try to do split jerks with a standard grip and it takes incredible shoulder flexibility. Balance is an issue too.

Lifters have the option of of jerking the bar however they want. The split jerk is perhaps more common than the squat jerk because it allows lifters to have a larger base of support. In the squat jerk, a small mistake may usually lead to a miss. In general, the lifter chooses whatever method they are more comfortable with. The squat jerk definitely looks quite interesting in action!
By the way, Shi Zhiyong actually power jerks(does not go into a full squat). He squat jerked on the last lift due to the sheer amount of weight. If a lifter has a lot of power, it would probably be more efficient than the split jerk. One example would be Urik Vardanian (amazing lifter!!!), who uses a very small split on his jerk. You can see what his jerk looks like by youtubing him up.

You could use that same faulty reasoning for a clean, saying that he ended up catching it really high, which is unusual. You don't always catch a bar in the same place in a jerk. Look at where his arms lock out in each attempt; you'll see that they aren't in the same place. In a split jerk, you catch it slightly lower than in a power jerk, and even lower in the squat jerk.
If great authors such as Arthur Dreschler are willing to recognize power and squat jerking, then so am I.

this is ridiculous flexibility and balls. a can do shoulder dislocates with a narrow snatch grip all the way back with even releasing the bar - but this guy looks like he can do it with a clean grip.
i dont really think you can say this sport is better or harder than that one in the olympics because all these athletes devote years of blood, sweat and tears to what they do. yes a wrestler might be able to destroy a weightlifter but a wrestler cant lift hundreds of pounds over his head
Thats real athleticism. Although it may not require great stamina, Olympic style weightlifting is one of the only sports which requires great strength, power, speed, flexability, coordination, and courage. The only other sport I can think of similar to this is gymnastics.

It is very irrelevant how they jerk it, as long as they complete the lift and have plausible stability at the top. The squat jerk is a lot harder and takes a long ass time to be able to pull it off well.

I do what I believe are called "shoulder dislocations" with a broomstick. It's not too hard to swing a broom stick to your back with a wide grip.
