The enterprise has two different self-destruct codes. The one in the movie was the code used when near a planet. The other code would have destroyed the whole ship, but it's used when the ship is in deep space.
She doesnt look very destroyed. Badly damaged, yes, unrepairable, no. If she hadn't fallen into atmosphere, some hostile faction could have gotten alot of federation tecnology off her. You'd think self destruct would blow up more than just half the saucer and a little stardrive section. Just sayin.............................
One thing I don't understand. Why didn't it completely detonate in the movie? usually self destruct completely destroys a ship. But all that happened with this ship was half of the saucer blowing up. Was it to broken to work completely?
Supposedly there's two self destruct options. Destruct-0 which detonates specific portions of the hull which ruins the ship but doesn't totally destroy it. And Destruct-1 which detonates the Warp Core blowing up everything nearby..
By the time of Next Gen it had been changed to Auto-Destruct while only detonates the core.
From what we see in the movie the Bridge and half of the saucer explodes, for all we know the rest of the ship could still exist and is floating around somewhere.
@michaelhviper Explosions also occured deep in the secondary hull making the ship useless. Someone made a "what if" video that dealt with the idea that the ship skipped off the atmosphere and back out into space to be found by the Enterprise-B many years later. Search for "Star Trek - Ressurection of the Enterprise"
@jtkirkfan2002 I saw that video I really liked it I still have an opinion that there is a possibility that the Enterprise could still exist officially.
@michaelhviper You think she might have survived crashing on Genesis and then the subsequent destruction of the planet? Hmmm... the Enterprise was one tough ship, but I doubt anything of her survived.
awesome job---you should do the same thing with the 3 foot polar lights model!
one tiny error (really insignificant) the "original series" decal for the engineering section was the A, not the 1701. but all in all, i give you high marks for skill and ability. enjoyed the video
@superpaperdude Wrong. The NCC-1701 got refitted twice. The version, which blew up was seen in the first movie from 1978. That was the refit of the "original" sovereign class, while the real original was the Spaceship seen in "The Cage".
What you do take a blow touch to the model kit! LOL I did some real battle scares to the many model kits I’ve had in the past. One was taking a real match and holding it several inches below while it smears the model with black smoke marks, without melting the plastic.
If I was going to do saucer cut-away I’d take a sharp knife and cut the saucer out near to what it looked like in the film.
@AndventureWill You really hadn´t seen Star Trek III? Then do that. You will see, that the saucer explode and then the ship glows in the atmosphere...
@AndventureWill I wondered too why there was no matter/antimatter explosion. The Star Trek franchise 'cleaned up' this issue in "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" by detailing TWO distinct self-destruct codes:
"Destruct Zero"- (code used) renders ship useless to capture by blowing computers/burning saucer section inside out. Antimatter bottles would be ejected away intact.
"Destruct One" - Crash magnetic antimatter containment-then, BOOM. This would take out much of the planet (& cast-!!).
The saucer section has explosive set at certain areas to make certain the whole ship is destroyed. In Star Trek 3, like he notes, the saucer section explodes, and what's left of the engineering section burns up in the atmosphere.
@AndventureWill that's only in Star Trek Generations with the Enterprise-D, because there was a core breach. for Constitution class vessels such as the refitted NCC-1701 Enterprise, there are explosives laid in the saucer section.
@AndventureWill Not back then they didn't. There are special charges laid out through the ship back then. Just watch Star Trek 3. Her warp core didn't blow up.
@AndventureWill Such a self destruct wouldn't have worked for the plot of the movie, so the writers invented a second mode of self destruct. All the antimatter is ejected, and the hull is blown out with explosive charges. It's discussed in Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise.
@AndventureWill There werer two version of the self-destruct. One version was to be used in deep space when no damage to nearby planets was possible. This was a complete overload of the warp core and could possibly take out nearby enemy vessels. The second was what Kirk used in ST:III and was to be used when in a solar system. It wrecked the ship with concealed explosives, making it a useless hulk to an enemy.
@AndventureWill The ship is rigged with explosive throughout the ship to make the entire ship unusable anymore if was attempted to be salvaged. So therefore every section is blown up!
How can you be certain it was an explosion caused by the reactor overloading? This was a purposeful self-destruct that could have been set off by many technical means, such as the phaser array exploding, system's all over the ship exploding by way of power back-feeding, who knows what all. In fact, it makes more sense to not use the warp core for a self-destruct because it can be detected by other ships, tipping them off, and rendering it as a counter-measure less effective.
@AndventureWill if Kirk entered the cone 000 Destruct 1, instead of 000 destruct 0 then the warp core would collapse and the explosive yield would be over 100 megatons. however this was meant for deep space self destruct, not near planets and certainly not near the bird of prey in which kirk needed!
It needs fiber optics to make it sparkle- and the lower hull damage needs a little putty and detail added to make the burn marks seem a little more real- but a good job, battle damage is a part of star trek.
why did kirk destroy the Enterprise's his own ship and the pride of starfleet I can not watch that one film seeing the best ship of her time but all good things must come to a end. and why do all the enterprise and the Enterprise d all seem to be destroyed by klingons
@startrekker99 the klingons took out the automation center Scotty put into the ship so it could be operated by only the bridge crew. when that happened it blew out all the main systems, weapons, engines, they were dead in space. the only weapon she had was the auto destruct which took the Klingon boarding party completely by surprise making a priceless bit of ending to their evil
@80stvfan09 I think Star Fleet knew that, and that is why they didn't stick Kirk and crew with it. But did give him a new Enterprise so the dream will continue.... Long live Kirk !!
I've got to say, I'm pretty dissapointed with the damage of that ship. I mean, I understand that they had to leave some degree of if intact for movie purposes, but didn't they explain it sometime in the series (all of them) that the collision of matter and anitmater be enough to destroy the ship?
And, if I'm right- I really don't know if I am- that would be located in the engineering section, toward the stomach of the ship. Wouldn't more of the engineering section be (at least) more tore open
@chldofice the destruct mode used was Destruct code 0, which blows all main systems and exposes all the corridors to space, making the ship a worthless hulk useful for salvage operations later by Starfleet. the other mode was used in later incarnations of Star Trek and made the warp core breach which vaporized the ship like an exploding sun. since they were near a planet the used the first, then the ship burns up in the atmosphere
@chldofice It dosen't need to be completely destroyed, The saucer is blown because that's where the ships computer core is including all the secrets. The rest of the systems are disabled anyway. Remeber any thing still left in engineering is known tech that the other space-fareing races had long before earth, and long before the federation existed. As I said before all the secrets are in the core which is blown to hell. Besides they can't learn anything about the hull that they haven't...
@chldofice Destruct 0, code 0. blow all main systems and make the ship a hulk. useful for salvage operations. destruct code 1 is the warp core overload, used in later ST series as the de-facto destruct mode
@chldofice Just read your comment 1/03, but was glad to see someone else wondered why there was no matter/antimatter explosion. The S/T franchise 'cleaned up' this issue in "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" by detailing TWO distinct self-destruct codes:

"Destruct One" - Crash magnetic antimatter containment-then, BOOM!!
Its a great model, but it begs the question; why doesn't the federation have better self-destruct systems. Most of the ship is still intact and can be salvaged by any enemy. Even if the entire ship is open to hard vacuum, but the nacelles, phasers, and torpedo launchers are still intact.
Seeing as how the Enterprise burned up in the atmosphere of a planet that exploded soon afterwards, I seriously doubt that there was anything to salvage. Besides, there are different self destruct codes for various circumstances.
@escelante It still doesn't seem terribly sensible to destroy just a bit of the ship. And if they were trying to restrict the damage with a small explosion, wouldn't it make more sense to have the ship leave orbit? I mean, they would have to turn the impulse engines on anyway to de-orbit and burn up in the atmosphere.
Also, the Enterprise crashing should have killed the Ewoks.
not a very good self destruct...it only vaporizes everything and everyone in the forward sauser section and leaves the enemy to take the tech in the back lol
@shadowOrgon That's the Type-1 Destruct sequence. It is to be used if near a planet, starbase, or other starship that you don't want vaporized. The warp core is vented and the anti-matter bottles are sent on a course as far away as possible. The computer core is located along the center axis of the saucer section and is destoyed.

WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO KEEP A DEAD SHIP?!? Whoever owns that model is RACIST against the Federation. The USS Enterprise was too beautiful to die the way she did! I can't stand to look at this video! I feel like Herbert Morrison when he saw the Hindenburg go down in flames! :'(
@droidekabakugan1986 Because it´s the Enterprise in her last seconds before she is glowing in the atmosphere. And no, i am not a racist against the federation because James T. Kirk has destroyed his own ship as you know. :)
@TitanicWHV Someone also apparently doesn't understand the meaning of the word "racist" to claim that you are "racist" against the Federation, a social and political system made up of hundreds of different races.
The Federation stands for the United Federation of Planets. The initial members were Earth, Vulcan, Andor, and Tellar.
It is not a race. It is a republic of planets. You cannot be racist against something that isn't a race. Saying "Having that model is racists towards the Federation!" is stupid. That's like saying "Having that Ford is racist against GM!"
Well ok, but I don't see how owning a damaged version of the enterprise would be somehow racially offencive to them (Especially since they don't exist)
Thing is, the commander of starfleet said that the enterprise was too old and too outdated to even be servicable anymore, and I for one would have liked to have seen him proven the hell wrong, to see Kirk triumphantly return with both Spock and the enterprise in one piece, Enterprise having faced down the Klingons one more time
Instead it turns out that the commander was right, that after all enterprise had been through it was time for it to go, and to be put down like a dog
@Mrspikeprime That's another thing I never got... how could they think about decomissioning her, when her sisters stayed in service for years after? Enterprise had been refitted before, why couldn't they just refit her again? It's not like they had to make any massive changes to her exterior. Maybe just refurbish the interior... heck the Enterprise-A got two interior overhauls during her time!
You know, that's bugged me over the years too, did you notice that there was actually a constitution class in the battle of wolf 359? You don't see it in emissary for some reason, but when the enterprise goes to the wreckage, there's a hull design I'd recognise anywhere--refit constitution
There are even shots of refit constitution in episodes like "All good things", and throughout DS9.
They're still using miranda class (Like relient) in TNG, so why get rid of enterprise?
@Mrspikeprime LOL! I noticed that Constitution refit engineering hull in "Best of Both Worlds" as well! Though, I don't remember seeing a Connie in "All Good Things". And if they were in DS9 I'm shocked I never noticed them!
I'm well aware of the Federation still using TMP era hulls in TNG though. Excelsior I and II hulls, Mirandas, Oberths... all great ships. But none are as beautiful as the Constitution refit.
I've got to say, I never liked the Oberth. It just looked... silly. Plus, it sucked in a fight.
As for the "All good things" appearences, I'm not sure if it was specifically in that fight, but there were definately other examples of Constitution ships in other battles, I just can't think of episode names.
What do you think of the new design for the ncc-1701 (No bloody A, B, C OR D)?
@Mrspikeprime Oh, goodness... that's a tough one... I mean, they used elements from the TMP refit... I thought it was okay... but it still wasn't this ship for me. Again... I don't understand why they had to change the look of the ships. It kind of upset me as a Star Trek fan. I mean, I understand the whole "alternate reality" thing... but the freaking ships always looked the same in every reality we ever saw!
Where they somehow embarrassed by the TOS ship designs?
Did they believe that the TOS era ships weren't as sexy as the later ones? Or that they couldn't visually compete with other sci-fi franchises like Star Wars? Pssh... bull...
But who knows... maybe they might bring back the TMP era hulls in future movies... or if they just decide to scrap the so-called "reboot universe" and go back to the "Prime Universe".
I don't know, I think the "Prime universe" has pretty much had its story. There's really not much more to add, and I for one would be quite intrigued to see how an ACTUAL star trek writer would handle a brand new universe, as apposed to JJ Abrams, who admitted that he never even like trek to begin with.
Just as long as that writer isn't Brennan Braga (Bleh)
I've got to admit though, I didn't like the new enteprise at first, but it's slowly started to grow on me.
@Mrspikeprime Hmmm... you think the "Prime Universe" has played itself out? That there are no more stories left in it? Wow... I think there are still plenty of stories left in the Prime Universe. This is Star Trek we're talking about here... a show about space and it's unknown immensity! I sure there is plenty of story material still left for it. I want to find out what happened after the Dominion War.
@Mrspikeprime Did Captain Sisko ever come back? What of Voyager's crew? We know what happened to Janeway (she became an admiral) but what about the rest of the crew? And surely there are other worthy ships, stations, and officers in the Federation and Starfleet that new shows can be centered around.
I want them to make one big crossover movie that features all the crews. Like huge threat that requires all of Starfleet's best to defeat it.
If your talking about the prequel version it sucks. They tryed to make it look better than the retro version and failed. They could have just gone with the Enterprise A and be done with it, it atleast looked better on screen.
I've got to admit, the first time I looked at it, I thought it looked like the ugliest thing I've ever seen outside of a michael bay movie... but after further consideration, it's started to grow on me. Don't get me wrong, it's still not the enterprise, but I think the initial "BLEHHH!!!!" factor has begun to wear off.
If you actually have seen ST 2 and 3, you would have know she would have been scrapped, which is far worse that going out like the 1701 did. Better to let her go down in the blaze of glory, than to send her to a scrapyard to be slowly ripped apart piece by piece.
First off dude, grow up. Its a story. Second, I think that the model is an amazing exercise in craftsmanship and imagination. I'm sure that the model was not easy to make that way, and that it took some serious effort. But to call it "Raciest against the Federation"... Really? The Federation is a fictional organization that only exists in cannon. SO RELAX. Its not racist. That would be like my ship wreck for my fish tank. So it's British, does that mean I'm racist against England? Well, is it?
@droidekabakugan1986 At least use the right words to express your misplaced indignation. An insult, a cruel sneer, a desecration even. The Federation is not a race, so it can't be racist. And it isn't. This model records and honours the last moments of a great and noble ship, that even when it was destroyed, protected the Federation one last time. If the Klingon's had gotten their hands on Genesis tech... it might be useless for terraforming, but it would still work as a one shot planet killer.
@JediMasterHorton :Indeed, there are always possibilities. She will always live... in my memories. I never mistook the starships of movies 4, 5 or 6 for being the real Enterprise.
Actually the Enterprise-A is the Constitution Class refit used later on in ST:V, which was the one after ol'e NCC-1701. i believe you're referring to the NX-class Enterprises used in ENT
The Saucer section is perfect. But I'm not quite sure about the secondary hull burn marks, and to have the full effect, the deflector and the warp nacelles needs to be black, but all in all you have my full 5 stars :)
The mould is good, but the paint job leaves a lot to be desired.

Seeing as how the Enterprise burned up in the atmosphere of a planet that exploded soon afterwards, I seriously doubt that there was anything to salvage. Besides, there are different self destruct codes for various circumstances.
escelante 1 year ago
@escelante It still doesn't seem terribly sensible to destroy just a bit of the ship. And if they were trying to restrict the damage with a small explosion, wouldn't it make more sense to have the ship leave orbit? I mean, they would have to turn the impulse engines on anyway to de-orbit and burn up in the atmosphere.
Also, the Enterprise crashing should have killed the Ewoks.

such a sad loss but well created
richgarn79 1 year ago
not a very good self destruct...it only vaporizes everything and everyone in the forward sauser section and leaves the enemy to take the tech in the back lol
shadowOrgon 1 year ago

droidekabakugan1986 1 year ago
@droidekabakugan1986 Because it´s the Enterprise in her last seconds before she is glowing in the atmosphere. And no, i am not a racist against the federation because James T. Kirk has destroyed his own ship as you know. :)

@TitanicWHV i got before the destruction after the destruction and ofcourse the Not destroyed enterprise
bovb902 1 year ago
@TitanicWHV Someone also apparently doesn't understand the meaning of the word "racist" to claim that you are "racist" against the Federation, a social and political system made up of hundreds of different races.
jtkirkfan2002 10 months ago
@droidekabakugan1986 would you rather the Enterprise fall into Klingon hands?

@droidekabakugan1986
Please explain to me how you can be "racist" towards the Federation when the Federation isn't a race?
Draknfyre 1 year ago
@Draknfyre Everyone here on Earth qualifies as a race. The Federation is the human species, as well as any aliens that have joined the Federation.
droidekabakugan1986 1 year ago
@droidekabakugan1986
Wow, are you misinformed on Star Trek.
Draknfyre 1 year ago 7
@droidekabakugan1986
OK, I agree that it was a really sucky way for a ship to go down (Especially one with a history like the Enterprise)
But how is it "Racist"? That doesn't even make any sense.
Mrspikeprime 11 months ago
@Mrspikeprime I see all the races that make up the Federation as one collective race.
droidekabakugan1986 11 months ago
@droidekabakugan1986
Well ok, but I don't see how owning a damaged version of the enterprise would be somehow racially offencive to them (Especially since they don't exist)
Mrspikeprime 11 months ago
@Mrspikeprime Because it's too severely damaged to even fly, and therefore, a derelict.
droidekabakugan1986 11 months ago
@Mrspikeprime It was a great way for her to go down! She took out a whole enemy crew! :p
terrywest111 10 months ago
@terrywest111
Thing is, the commander of starfleet said that the enterprise was too old and too outdated to even be servicable anymore, and I for one would have liked to have seen him proven the hell wrong, to see Kirk triumphantly return with both Spock and the enterprise in one piece, Enterprise having faced down the Klingons one more time
Instead it turns out that the commander was right, that after all enterprise had been through it was time for it to go, and to be put down like a dog
tragic
Mrspikeprime 10 months ago
@Mrspikeprime That's another thing I never got... how could they think about decomissioning her, when her sisters stayed in service for years after? Enterprise had been refitted before, why couldn't they just refit her again? It's not like they had to make any massive changes to her exterior. Maybe just refurbish the interior... heck the Enterprise-A got two interior overhauls during her time!
terrywest111 10 months ago
@terrywest111
Mrspikeprime 10 months ago
@terrywest111

Mrspikeprime 10 months ago
@Mrspikeprime LOL! I noticed that Constitution refit engineering hull in "Best of Both Worlds" as well! Though, I don't remember seeing a Connie in "All Good Things". And if they were in DS9 I'm shocked I never noticed them!
I'm well aware of the Federation still using TMP era hulls in TNG though. Excelsior I and II hulls, Mirandas, Oberths... all great ships. But none are as beautiful as the Constitution refit.
terrywest111 10 months ago
@terrywest111 I would love to see a 24th century refitted Constitution class go toe to toe with a Dominion warship! That would be awesome!
They are in the MORPG by Cryptic. I had one with Sovereign class nacelles. :p
terrywest111 10 months ago
@terrywest111
XD
Mrspikeprime 10 months ago
@Mrspikeprime Oh, goodness... that's a tough one... I mean, they used elements from the TMP refit... I thought it was okay... but it still wasn't this ship for me. Again... I don't understand why they had to change the look of the ships. It kind of upset me as a Star Trek fan. I mean, I understand the whole "alternate reality" thing... but the freaking ships always looked the same in every reality we ever saw!
Where they somehow embarrassed by the TOS ship designs?
terrywest111 10 months ago
Did they believe that the TOS era ships weren't as sexy as the later ones? Or that they couldn't visually compete with other sci-fi franchises like Star Wars? Pssh... bull...
But who knows... maybe they might bring back the TMP era hulls in future movies... or if they just decide to scrap the so-called "reboot universe" and go back to the "Prime Universe".
terrywest111 10 months ago
@terrywest111
A little.
not much.
Mrspikeprime 10 months ago
@Mrspikeprime Hmmm... you think the "Prime Universe" has played itself out? That there are no more stories left in it? Wow... I think there are still plenty of stories left in the Prime Universe. This is Star Trek we're talking about here... a show about space and it's unknown immensity! I sure there is plenty of story material still left for it. I want to find out what happened after the Dominion War.
terrywest111 10 months ago
@Mrspikeprime Did Captain Sisko ever come back? What of Voyager's crew? We know what happened to Janeway (she became an admiral) but what about the rest of the crew? And surely there are other worthy ships, stations, and officers in the Federation and Starfleet that new shows can be centered around.
I want them to make one big crossover movie that features all the crews. Like huge threat that requires all of Starfleet's best to defeat it.
*sigh*
A man can dream, right? ;)
terrywest111 10 months ago
@Mrspikeprime
If your talking about the prequel version it sucks. They tryed to make it look better than the retro version and failed. They could have just gone with the Enterprise A and be done with it, it atleast looked better on screen.
SunTrapped 9 months ago
@SunTrapped
Mrspikeprime 9 months ago
@droidekabakugan1986
If you actually have seen ST 2 and 3, you would have know she would have been scrapped, which is far worse that going out like the 1701 did. Better to let her go down in the blaze of glory, than to send her to a scrapyard to be slowly ripped apart piece by piece.

Brandao130 6 months ago
First off dude, grow up. Its a story. Second, I think that the model is an amazing exercise in craftsmanship and imagination. I'm sure that the model was not easy to make that way, and that it took some serious effort. But to call it "Raciest against the Federation"... Really? The Federation is a fictional organization that only exists in cannon. SO RELAX. Its not racist. That would be like my ship wreck for my fish tank. So it's British, does that mean I'm racist against England? Well, is it?
sarge1701 5 months ago
@droidekabakugan1986 At least use the right words to express your misplaced indignation. An insult, a cruel sneer, a desecration even. The Federation is not a race, so it can't be racist. And it isn't. This model records and honours the last moments of a great and noble ship, that even when it was destroyed, protected the Federation one last time. If the Klingon's had gotten their hands on Genesis tech... it might be useless for terraforming, but it would still work as a one shot planet killer.
