  • Check with Mr. White for old tapes I know there use to be some old tapes and reels in the bandroom before the remodel...

  • I`m guessing mid to late 70s

  • i'm drumline 97 and i'll see what i can get my hands on. i'm sure barb has some vids laying around.

  • Any video anyone has lying around would be super whether it's last decade or anytime before. We'll take it! And if you just have the VHS tape, I'll transfer it for you free so we can post it here and share more Big Red Band!

  • What march is this?

  • "Indian Fire"

  • Wow that band sounds and look like my old high school band. They even have the white plumes on the helmet. They dont make bands like those anymore but why?

When I joined the band in middle school I had never heard a marching band or classical music before. Now Kids have acesss to youtube music writting software yet the quality of the marching bands nation wide leave a lot to be desire.

What is it? Is it budget cuts? I know the school are like 5times bigger now than then. What happened.

  • a combination of the no child left behind act and block scdualing

  • There are a few problems and this is coming from a licensed music teacher:

    1. Any time there is a budget cut, you can bet your last dollar that music will be on the chopping block.

    2. Children are fundamentally different and expect to be a "star" overnight.

    3. No Child Left Behind in music means "every child is pulled out of music for something else."

    4. Block scheduling destroyed any hope of a music program.

  • Here's a problem coming from a current member of the PHS Big Red Band.

    Lack of discipline.

When it comes down to the wire, we can make the cut, but we need discipline to go above and beyond.

  • Band is still a class at PHS now with the block what killed it is the other sports, other members of the band and the director as well

  • "2. Children are fundamentally different and expect to be a "star" overnight."

And there are a lot of parents who aren't dedicated enough to get the kids to practice EVERY time and who also don't see a problem with scheduling vacation or other trips on competition Saturdays even if they know in advance. They don't realize how bad a marching "hole" looks while they are out of town or how much that hurts the rest of the group. And then they are the very first to complain about other parents...

  • I wish they would bring back the old color guard, especially since the ROTC is in danger of being destroyed by advisors (You don't need ROTC) and the state board of education (you need 10,000 credits to graduate).

  • This looks like the fall of 1983 or spring of 1984.

I started sophmore band in the summer of '84. The J's played this video over and over to show the pinwheels and what they expected them to look like.

I wish there was video of the Stern Wheel Regatta parade in August of 1984.

    Thanx Doug you rock!

  • Definitely wasn't '84. I started in '84 also. We had 8 sousaphones, not 4. We also didn't play "Indian Fire". I remember the video well since the J's also used that as a recruiting video.

  • Chris didn't we have like 180 playing members. There only 108 here plus 17 percussion. I wish I could find the video from Charleston where I lost my pants and Mrs. J tried to pull them up. Good times. Shep

  • hey just wanted to pointed out that if this wasnt during football season then the band would probaly be smaller. This band probaly is 180 during football season then shrinks like all band by the end of the year.

  • I'm a '63 graduate of PHS and played in the Big Red Band under Frank Schroeder. This video brought a lump in my throat as I well remember the disciplines that we underwent to produce such a presentation such as this! I am presently (2008) the "senior" brass player (trumpet) of the Philadelphia Orchestra and credit much of my success to my musical growth in the Big Red Band!

  • PHS Percussion Corps Class of 88. The greatest marching band under the direction of Kent and Felice Jorgenson and Percussion Director Chet Backus. Any Video of that ....please post.

  • I would post any I could get my hands on, but nobody seems to have any. At the time, nobody thought to keep them.

  • I marched in this parade and I believe the piece is called "Mirada". If anyone has any more BRB videos, please post them. Thanks for this one Doug.

  • are you sure its 1982? im in there and i didnt enter phs until 1984.

  • Wow. I live in Marietta and I'm in "training" currently for marching band.........and I'm in intense pain! It's harder than other people think because if one person messes up, the whole band could suffer!

  • We spent 7 years in Parkersburg what a great place......

  • i believe this was 1983, thats what my footage says.

  • Great!

  • Thanks again!

  • That was a great parade band. Sounded great on the song and a great cadence. The band took that corner very good. TIGHT BAND! I was from Clarksburg WV and was played percussion for Liberty High School Band.

  • Omg... I used to live in Parkersburg... so wierd!!

  • Awesome!
