Great video proving once again that Alice is the best. These albums may have sold poorly in the 80's but the live version is awesome. Cannot wait for his next album in his unparralleled career.
It's crazy to see Alice's energy at this time. This short lived Alice was edgy and tough. I believe that this is where MM got his inspiration. Cooper is not only the Shock ROck King, but also known as the Grandfather of Punk, and this is Why!!!
I loved this whole experimental period. Amazing that he was able to produce so much good stuff (as well as the bad) when he was so sick and exhausted. Even at his worst he's more creative than most at their best.
Did anyone notice Madonna's Sticky n' Sweet look for that tour? Some of that symbolism was borrowed from Alice's B.D.Babies/Welcome2Nightmare shows...And there she was, playing guitar, wearing a white top hat, hair same length, sporting skulls. It Irritated me being Madonna is in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Alice Cooper, of course, is NOT !!
@mooksterUSofA Okay, I'm down, fill me in. I am suspecting its a conspiracy of some sort like any other club, secret society or deal with the devil pact.
basically the way I see it is that the R&R is just confused by Alice Cooper (is it a "he" or a "they"?) So, Alice Cooper (both the "him" & the "they" are still laughing while causing confusion).
@hardc1974 I see your point, but I wouldn't go that far. Not a GaGa fan at all but if you're gonna say she ripped off Alice then you have to say Alice ripped off Lord Sutch who was doing the schlock act long before him. I think it would be safer to say Lord Diamond ripped off Alice.
@IYAMNI I agree. I love Alice, but I think its safe to say he "borrowed" from Screaming Lord Sutch (who was awesome by the way) and Arthur Brown. After Alice of course there was King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. Marilyn Manson we shouldn't even mention, what a total alice wannabe. And now GaGa, she's just Madonna and Alice rolled up into one and everyone thinks she's so "original" Yeh right......
@DoeblerGermanWolf 'Nothing new under the sun' as the saying goes. 'The show must go on.' :-) I think Alice was smarter about it all. More tongue in cheek. I mean.. "Dead Babies"... who else could pull that one off? haha
(continued)... and being physically and mentally burnt out didn't help. But, as hit and miss as this period was (often blighted by tin-can production and tired vocals), going as far out on a limb as he did occasionally paid off with some of Alice's most fascinating songs. I keep coming back to "Clones (We're All)", "Pain", "Former Lee Warmer", "Pass The Gun Around"...great stuff.
To me, that's the mark of a great artist: no matter the period, style or circumstance, always worth listening to.
interesting insights, some dodgy stuff in that period, but some very original stuff too, personally i find brutal planet and dragontown far less interesting than this period (haven't followed him so much for his latest two albums), alice was always far more showbiz than bowie, but occupied a similar niche within it
Alice never looked more terrifying than he did in the early 80's...his "beat up military drag queen" style was so raw and edgy it's almost hard to know what to make of it.
Personally, I think the fact that Alice claims to remember virtually nothing about this period of his life suggests that he was largely acting on instinct, and instantly indulging whatever bizarre impulse he experienced. Not a surefire recipe for success - he released a lot of his worst material from 1980-83...
Oh, God, this is great! Haven't seen the clip until now. I love Special Forces, and I love this song. It's so raw, powerful, it's so punk. And Alice looks really cool here, despite the fact that he was literally dying from alcohilism.
Look at his make up, and his charisma... o man! Marylin Manson can suck his balls :)
Ha ha You are funny! Yes, back in the late 80's Phil Donahue made a comparison between the two performers...and I almost gagged. Phil Donahue revealing his complete dork-ignorance on air! Does anyone REALLY understand how cool Alice was during this movement ??
@Eliskoopa How do u know he hasn't? lol. The best thing about Alice Cooper is that he still has that charisma on stage. He blew every other rock star out of the water when I saw him last summer.
i dont agree that just because this is some of his least known stuff.. people say this is "real cooper fans" favorites...im a real cooper fan...and this isnt the best album to me...the original cooper gang will always be the "REAL" cooper fans favorites
This is one of his poorest selling albums, but much like "da-da" it is a favorite of his real fans. I like this album (and this song was great) but da-da is my fave
awesome stuff, I wish someone would put out a series of career retrospective DVD's of Alice's career, much like KISS has done recently with the KISSOLOGY sets.
He looks like he's about to die at any minute.
