sorry, wasn't much help. It did not discuss speed + latency or ECC, unbuffered/buffered,etc. This doesn't tell you all you need to know about getting the most out of your memory/system. When you go to the My Computer properties you show that you can only use up to 2 GB of memory, this is misleading because the My Computer panel does NOT tell you the max supported, only what is currently installed.I know this because my panel also says 2 GBs, but I know the motherboard I installed supports 4.
I recently upgraded my Dell laptop from 4GB to 8GB. The crucial memory advisor tool @crucial.com was invaluable to me. It made choosing my sticks painless. The entire process, including installation, could not have been easier.
@dave3321xxxx I used the same tool. It tells you what the motherboard is compatible with, but does that mean that the computer fully supports the higher memory speeds or just that the memory is compatible? (ie. maybe the memory is 800 but the computer only uses/supports 500, so 300 is wasted?)
also my computer is a HP laptop, its one of thouse computers that someone like dell,HP,microsoft makes and then its never heard from again so its not on that list

I have 4 memoery slots and 2 are used, the computer came with 2 256MB Ram sticks , so i have 2 slots. I bought 2 corsair 1 gig ram sticks. But i didnt know which type of ram manufacturer i already had. I never knew u couldnt mix and match. what should i do?
I got my computer a month or 2 ago and it only supports 8 gigs. There isn't a limit on most desktop computers, but there are on laptops and mini/small desktop computers.
it's best that you do match the speed. Because if you buy two sticks of RAM and one is slower then the other, it will only run at the speed of the slowest one.
Yes, thats true, i thougt you ment if you buy new RAM and replace them with the old ones.. But if you use the old one too, then its smart to match the speed :)
I am getting either a hp pavillion or a dell inspiron sunday...the hp has 3GB RAM and 320MB Memory. The dell has 4GB RAM and 250MD memory.Which should i get????
You guys can also try using Crucial(.com). They have a scanner that scans your computer, so you don't even have to know the model name. The scanner will send you directly to the RAM your computer can use. They have great service, just used them to get RAM for my Mac.
This video is awful and that way is slow and some people might not have DELL, HP, IBM or Acer computer it might be a custom build but Crucial does a free Memory Scanner that scans your motherboard
heheheh...you bought a ram.. :D

hey i can only install 512 mb ram and i want 2 gig can it hurt my pc/ do i need a other motherboard?
ZinodinhoProductions 2 years ago
you need another motherboard that can support more ram
fifa07fanitic 2 years ago
You can use a 512mb and a gig of ram together they just need to run at the same speed. For exemple, the 512mb kingston and the 1 gig are both 333MHz.

You don't have to match the brand of the sticks of RAM. Although you do have to match the speed.
For example if you buy one stick of PC5400, you would have to buy one that matches the speed, not the brand.

Um.. Wrong. You dont have to match the speed.

why do you need 8GB of RAM?

because i will be sharing it with my dad and he has a business so he needs the ram
CpmvBigeyes506 2 years ago
so your computer goes faster. You need 64 bit for 8 gigs to work tho.
