  • WHAT.

  • for all you unimaginative morons who take things far too literally, this ad is satire of the BEST kind - a satirical poke of genius at the surrealist films of the 20's & 30's - so beautifully executed by commercials director Frank Budgeon, who's responsible for some of the best ads ever on telly....and so wickedly summed up in the tag-line: "reassuringly elephants" ....If only all ads were this good.

  • this ad fails to copy the type of movies that Buñuel did, total failure.

  • What absinthe-addicted art student did they commission to do this?

  • I DUNT GET IT

  • I... just...can't... this... is... what? What?

  • Wonderful commercial. Finally, there is someone out there in advertising land who knows a thing or two about this wonderful instrument.

  • Fantastic advert

  • I LOVED THIS ADD :o)

  • best advert ever. dark twisted genius no doubt about it beats the shit out of all the cheesy brainwashing shyte you get most of the time

  • @KillerDiaguR Yeah, maybe if it was a student film and not a beer commercial.

  • @ferretyluv no! this advert is the tits

  • @KillerDiaguR Commercials are supposed to sell something. They can look funny and cool while doing it, but they still have to sell a product. This doesn't scream "Buy Stella Artois". This screams "WTF did I just watch?"

If the customer remembers the ad more than the product, you have failed.

  • @ferretyluv i remembered both. BOOM

  • @KillerDiaguR That's you. You're not the average person.

Yet, you were commenting on the ad more than the product. You never said anything about "This makes me want to buy Stella Artois". You just kept talking about the ads and how artistic they were.

  • @ferretyluv although i will agree i am far from the average person, the only reason i wouldn't buy stella is the one too many times i've got loaded off it and smashed things. too old and too wise nowadays old chap

  • @ferretyluv advertising doesn't just work on this mono-dimensional retail level alone - if it did, then all ads would be just that - retail. Advertising is much more complex - it entertains us, makes us aware of brands and how they want us to feel. This Stella ad is one of many that simply tell us a story, entertain us ...and ultimately position the brand in a place they want to be. I think it's hilarious that you're all slamming the ad, yet you're all talking about the brand!

  • @stratos23 No, it doesn't. If you watch the ad, the brand name "Stella Artois" isn't very prominent. This is why the California Raisins and Taco Bell Chihuaha campaigns failed.

Also, most people are put off by post-modernism. If this campaign was so successful, you'd think they would have brought it over to the US. They didn't. You know why beer ads always show hot chicks? BECAUSE IT WORKS. Simple and gets the job done.

  • @ferretyluv Sure, advertising still works on this brash, predictable and reactionary level - but the average modern viewer is much more savvy. People don't want to have stereotypes shoved in their faces or told what to do. Advertising is now a more complex language than just "hot chicks = buy beer". Although if you're in America, then your references are somewhat relevant. Advertising tends to be more interesting and inventive outside of the States. It's why I don't make commercials in the US.

  • A weird mix between Salvador Dali and Begotten... I like it!

  • Bloody hell this was frightening.

  • i saw an ad show that had this commercial and they never even mentioned the theremin

  • i remember this advert it was on tv about three years ago

  • This creeps me out :| The woman on the stairs for instance.

  • Freaky ad!!

  • a bit too high-brow for me i think.

  • Spoilsbury Toastboy!

  • yeah man, I was thinking the same:)

  • YES! i knew i recognized this music!

  • yes yes yes yes :)

  • Think "L'Age D'or" instead of jumping onto "Un chien andalou" right off the bat ~ just for the sake of appearing more knowledgeable, eh.

  • Signed:

    the stupid American

  • Clara Rockmore

  • A verb, sir! We need a verb!

  • haha yeah i know :P i actually wanted to search here name in youtube and posted a comment instead :P...

btw, im interested in finding a thereminist composer to musicalize some of my projects, i'm a film student.

  • Who is the guy who drinks the beer in the end, then falls off his chair, then turns into an ostrich?

    He looks terribly familiar.

  • and that is why it is my favorite beer

  • Clara Rockmore's "Valse Sentimentale"! Dali and Bunuel's surrealism stylistics! Pure cinema!

  • i love this ad

  • RESPECT!

  • fat-pie did it before

because when i saw the advert i was like "wooooow fat pie!!"

  • it's ok when its 5am and you're on the brink of death. otherwise i'd stay away from lager entirely.

  • Wow Dali imagery and Clara Rockmore in one video, nice

  • besides, the stella brewed in the UK and other place is even worse than the one brewed in belgium.

  • Aerican lager is water ! Dutch Beer, Belgian Ales, and Czech Pilsners Rock!

  • I think David Firth copied this to make Spoilsbury Toastboy -2. It has the same song, and it has the visual imagery of insects crawling all over the place.

or maybe this commercial copied David Firth

  • Both came out in 2005, but knowing how long it takes an ad to be developed, the ad agency couldn't have copied Firth (Spoilsbury Toastboy-2 came out in November, 2005). I think it's all just a coincidence.

  • actually this is based on a film called "Un Chien Andalou" by Salvador Dali and Luis Bunnuel

  • Brenchen: your original title is "un perro andaluz" .... by Eugeni Salvador Dalí and Lluis Bunyuel (correct names in català, the language of Catalunya) ;-)

  • Spoilsbury Toast Boy was way before this.

  • And that has what, to do with this?

  • @javierenchina

This movie parodies old surrealistic art-films (like Un Chien Andalou), and Firth is obviously also very inspired by this type of art. I guess that's why it's so similar .:)

  • @javierenchina the imagery of the insects crawling everywhere is from Le Chien Andalous, a surreliast film by Salvador Dali. this is a decent homage to it!

  • i love how creepy the theremin can be.

  • Clara Rockmore is a goddess

  • What an ad. Pity the article isn't as good.

  • you suck. stella is probably the best beer in the world...

  • The one time I tried Stella Artois, it tasted very similar to an Amway antisceptic spray. Hopefully the cause of the taste wasn't the beer itself, but still, I won't be trying it again any time soon.

  • viva the american beer and american way of living...

  • this statement is just an utter expression of blind nationalism. and it's out of place too.

  • this is a perfect example of blind nationalism. and it's out of place too. betcha you abstain from anything foreign and have never been abroad either... so ignorant

  • best beer in the world?? a stella is akin to a budweiser or heineken in belgium... flavoured piss.

try duvel, leffe, chimay, westvleteren, mort subite, delirium tremens, etc...

  • it's all a matter of what you like. some might like stella better than, say, leffe. they are completely different to begin with and just because they're both beer, does not make them the same. it's like comparing pears and oranges, doesn't really work...
