The coming of the war was NOT greeted with enthusiasm in France in 1914. People remembered 1870, when the stupid Paris crowd hat shouted "A Berlin" and bragged about the invincible France. In 1914, on the contrary, all officers' diaries I read describe soldiers and civilians worried about facing the enormous German war machine, and altogether resolute to do their duty. None dreamed of "reconquering Alsace-Lorraine": France was invaded, and we would be lucky if we stopped the invasion.
