No offense but Old English Mastiffs are the biggest dogs in the world with males occasionally reaching 300+ lbs. Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest dogs but lack the size of the Mastiffs.
thy are the tallest and longest dogs in the world.. and thats not only me saying it thats what the experts say too... also there not called Irish wolfhounds because they are the size of a wolf.. there called Irish wolfhound because they use to hunt wolfs and elk and other large mammals that lived in Ireland at the time.. hear is a like to show what the hell i'm talking about.....

well it wont let me put the link on but just you tube the worlds tallest dog in the world and scroll down to a link called...... dogs 101 - Irish wolfhounds
So what are they like? I men are they agressive or family inclined? Obviously they need loads of space and excercise... But what are their characters like?? I used to have an Anatolian Kangal and I had to give it away to a breeder because it was getting a bit gnarly. I really love huge dogs, I have the space and I am keeping an eye on this breed. Can anyone tell me plz?
Irish Wolfhounds are called "Gentle Giants" for a reason ;) almost all Irish Wolfhounds are easygoing and reliable. But they can get suspicious and fearful if they aren't trained from an early age. They have a great chasing instinct (they'll chase almost any animal that moves!) Most are friendly with strangers, but some can be wary. If you want to train him, he'll respond thoughtfully and slowly. That's pretty much most of what I know. Good luck hope you pick the Irish Wolfhound!
I'm sorry to hear that dusty died. You have my condolences. I'm sure that it was great to have her. I wish that that i had the capability to own an irish wolf hound. Cherish the memories :). Did you breed her because if you did then there will be more happiness to go around. If not im sure the memories will be enough :).
6ft long when standing upright no doubt, but 4 ft tall walking on all four?! BS! i say tops 3. Take which dog you want! - measure it at withers and i can promise you, it will be atleast twice that when standing upright! so if this dog is 6ft on hindlegs then it is for sure below 3 ft at withers. Pilgrim, tallest dog in sweden, is 222 cm (7'3) upright but "only" 98 cm at shoulders (38 1/2)
Irish wolfhounds are not the biggest dogs in the world. Why the hell do people make such statements. I've sany many and even though they are huge dogs, they dont compare in size to English Mastiffs or St.Bernards, even Leonbergers are probably bigger, plus a great dane too!
higher in the withers...and? I said the biggest. We are measuring the overall height, weight, mass (BMR) etc... and IWH are not the biggest. yes may be one of the tallest but not overall size.
yes i no but the avergaes speak for them selves if a dog is naturally taller then the mutations of how tall it is are going to be bigger, so when a freak irish wolf hound comes along it will be the biggest mofo
True and you can also say the same about a english mastiff who are minimum 30inches but average 30-36+ or evan saint bernards. Also depending on bloodlines some dogs are just taller than others of the same breed.
Aren't they called the 'deerhound'?? there's the wolfhound, which, as the name would suggest, is around the size of a wolf. The deerhound on the other hand, is...the size of your average deer. therefoere, larger than the wolfhound.
true, gray wolf are taller. And they didnt "hunt" wolfs they was just tracking down the wolfs, like elk & moose dogs. in a fight they wouldnt stand a chance
@DarkEquine no the deerhound is a different breed the name wolfhound comes from the fact that they were used to hunt and kill wolves in Ireland a job they were so successful at that the wolf is now extinct in Ireland they were bred to be much larger than wolves so they could pick them upby the back of the neck and shake them much the same way as a modern terrier will kill a rat
oh no big deal im not trying to say your wrong or anything i just read 4 feet which would be 48inches. A great dane named Titan just broke the record at almost 43inches from ground to withers.
hi :) i have a scottish deerhound, if you dont know what that is, it is kind of a "twin-breed" of wolfhound, and it it actually bigger than any wolfhound i have ever met :P
but he is very big for his breed, he is about the same size as the dog in the first pic :)
WOW great dogs! I have a friend that has some running in his pack of gray hounds for coyote hunting and they make great kill dogs for coyotes! And they are so gentle with humans and even little kids.
I miss these gentle giants.. My aunt used to breed & show Irish Wolfhounds. At one point she had 14 at the same time. I used to love going outside & running with them. It was so cool, but it could be a bit scary at times. If you've never had a pack of Irish wolfhound running full speed toward you, just imagine over half a ton of fur and giant paws going about 20 mph straight for your face!! What an amazing breed!!
Wow! 14 Irish wolfhounds!!!! That must have been awesome xD
Dusty always, when she goes outside with us, runs full speed "toward us" to make it look like she'll crash into us but at the last second she turns and its so fun :D But sometimes when she gets mad she would run around the living room growling and barking, and literally she will go in circles around the living room. It is hilarious. She is afraid of hula hoops and jump ropes for some reason, and she eats chocolate but doesnt get sick xD
Yeah Irish wolfhounds are pretty cool dogs, but your half right they are the tallest and longest dogs in the world, but not the biggest and heaviest, but any ways, yay this dog is cool.
Scottish deerhound are a bit lighter than an Irish wolfhound.

People: the Irish wolfhound is the worlds largest breed, next is the Grate dane.
and if a bulldog puppy was as big as an adult wolfhound it's parents must have been horses.
too bad that Dusty died, at least she had a good home

Blabla I dont care what you say if you say it so.. ;p
When they say biggest they mean tallest.
Thas how it works, not a complicated definition between hight, weight etc.
IWH has tallest minimum.

Canine are pack animals, a single wolf will avoid most conflicts too.
