Penance has it's place in the human arena but is not proper currency in the heavenly one. The Price was paid in the complete work of Christ. So, do you penance as unto man, but know that it has little value to foster forgiveness with the LORD.
I was raised Catholic and I'm now a Protestant pastor. Penance does not make us right in God's eyes, that would be a salvation/forgiveness of works. 1 John is very clear that asking for forgiveness in the work of Christ is sufficient. The problem with Penance being part of the equation is 1) it's not biblical and 2) when does it end? The Work of Christ is sufficient to forgive all sins. Produce fruit in keeping with repentance - penance is negated and freedom is given.
This is what seperates most Protestant understandings of repentance or penance, that it is one thing to ask forgiveness from god and mend our ways but true penance must be worked out in it's mental/emotional and physical form in our lives. This "work" that he was doing bridges that gap. Imagine if he'd just walked up and said "Sorry for all I've done, I've asked god for forgiveness and changed my ways, please accept me", just not the same. Faith without works is dead.
I was talking to a friend today about reconciliation and penance. Sometimes it is not enough to ask God for forgiveness, but the harder part is actually forgiving ourselves and simply letting go of the baggage.
It reminded me of this famous scene from "The Mission" GREAT movie if you never got a chance to see it......Powerful story AND an awesome soundtrack. What more could you ask for?
Super Video.Thanks

To err is human; to forgive, Divine. One of the most spiritual scenes in the movies I have ever seen.
