With respect, exnemocpt, I found two English translations of the lyrics; one version, "...with America on the posters too," and the other with Toto Cutugno singing, "...TOO MUCH AMERICA ON THE POSTERS." Perhaps the lyrics were incorrectly intrepreted in the latter.
Soy hijo de Italiano y ahora tengo una hija en Recanati, Ancona, ademas cuatro nietos, el mas chiquito nacido en Italia, A.Rieu un genio contemporaneo que hace popular a la musica clasica. . .esto me llega al corazon. . .gracias por este video.-
Andre Rieu gave the best performance/rendition of this wonderful song, but please listen to Mario D'Amario's accordion performance at the 2009 Finnish Medley (Olen Suomalainen). And note the patriotic Italians waving their flag when he plays.
Well, you certainly give some relevance and significance to the lyrics. My relatives are from northern Italy, Boiano, Campobossa and Casaerta. They didn't speak of any North-South differences, cultural or otherwise. But proud of their heritage they were, and rightly so. Didn't Italy give the world the most cherished gifts: Pavarotti to Ramazzoti, the worlds greatest crooners, The Colosseum, Pizza, the Mafia, the list goes on forever...not specifically from north or south, but from Italy.
Appreciate your replies. I'm also Italian, living in Canada. But I have to admit when I finally found the lyrics I was surprised, to say the least. I anticipated that the lyrics would be...well, more of a higher, classical level, because the music is so perfect. Did I detect an expression of anti-Americanism? Please tell me no, that Italians love the States, and it's not a slant or negative thing that the Italians have against the States. That would just about ruin the song for me.
It is a pop song it is not classical & that's the reason of the simple lyrics. It is not against anything!
Italy is a very young nation: united in 1861! Italy was only a geographical term.
This song dates back the 80s: after the wars, the immigration from South to North and the TV, Italians had finally started to know who they were from N to S, to recognise their unity and finally feel patriotism.
Many foreigners criticise our patriotism, I've even been told we feel better than others. Usually educated ppl recognise the relevance of my country & understand the importance of our patriotism.
D'Azeglio said "L'Italia è fatta. Restano da fare gli italiani" It took time to fight the prejudices from North to South, to use Italian Language instead of German, Spanish&French in some areas.
But they were right: Italians did exist before 1861.
I'm from North Italy, where the movement to unify Italy started, you cannot imagine how deeply it breaks my heart when I read foreigners making up history, saying Italians from South Italy are different, like African, Arabs or whatever or when they say in North Italy we are Germans?! Again they try to divide my country without ever being here, without any reason but their ignorance and aim to hate.
My nation does exist, Italians are not Germans, not Arabs or whatever!
& when we say Italian is the best lang. we mean it: from N to S we spoke Italian dialects dirty with Germ, French, Spanish. Some areas were safe: Florence was 1. The best scholars declared its language was the real descendent from Latin, so they rebuilt a language taking the best from N to S, based on Fiorentino&the best literature.
It is the only language with practically a total correspondance between written&spoken, which was not born naturally, but created to be beautiful.
