  • Is the tripod holding the neck made by yourselves?

  • Ernie ball slinky strings all the way!

  • Dude you need way more windings on the string post, helps them stay in tune better.

  • @landlords77 no "dude", this is one of the best ways, stays in tune the best for me and truckloads of other people. sometimes there will be barely one wrap and its always in tune. there, "dude"

  • @BertilUlfsson Not all guitars are the same, some guitars just need those extra wraps around the post.

  • @landlords77 true that, but that wasnt your point

  • @BertilUlfsson On that guitar? maybe so.

  • @landlords77 at the end of the day, it doesnt really matter how you string your... Ibanez :D

  • Noob

  • i love that les paul. so wish i could afford it

  • i prefer gibson strings better

  • Never have more than 2 strings off the guitar ever. messes up your setup and bends the neck

  • you probably don't want to cut the string QUITE that close, in case you're a noob and don't tie it correctly on the first try and it slips out

  • I always string my guitar at least 3 wind, and at least 5 on my B and high E string. makes my guitar stay in tune for a longer period of time.

  • @sclogse1 You what?

Are you putting your strings in backwards?

Sorry, I'm just a little confused by your explanation.

  • @TheNeutralFan

Nope.not putting in backwards...it's just the way my stop tail works. I got my string piece out with some help with needle nose pliers and pushing. Yes, one aims down toward the tailpiece when putting on a string, under the tailpiece through it's lower holes, then it wraps over the top rear end of the tailpiece and heads back up over it's top, now nesting in each strings v shaped adjustable groove on the tailpiece. Your stop tail piece works differently. Want a pic?

  • @sclogse1 Please. Shall I PM you with my email address?

Your bridge sounds rather bizarre to me.

  • @sclogse1 Actually, just tell me what kind of guitar it is and I'll Google it.

  • Comment removed

  • @sclogse1 Ah. So it's just a wrap around tailpiece with nothing else fancy or unusual?

Sorry, your original comment has been removed so I'm still a bit confused.

  • @TheNeutralFan

That's right...a wrap around with a built in bridge..all in one.

  • @sclogse1 Sorry, what's the problem again? Not being able to refer to your original comment is a real drag.

All you really have to change with a wraparound tailpiece is that the strings go in backward, then bend up towards the headstock and sit in their grooves. The rest is just as per this video.

Your integrated bridge-tailpiece shouldn't be too much harder to restring. Is it a bit like this?

    stewmac.com/catalog/images_1lg/0198_1lg.jpg

  • @TheNeutralFan

My problem was solved..Just needed some needle nose pliers to help push out a stuck high E string in the wraparound..Thus i removed my comments. I'm tidy...what can I say? Now if you know anything about water heaters...

I'll be removing all my comments on this in a day or two....thanks for being around. I should mention that my luthier at guitar center did a piss poor job of installing the wraparound. The bolts going into the body are not a a true 90 degree angle ...

  • @sclogse1 Ah. Good to hear it's all sorted out.

Hmm. If it's a problem then it shouldn't be too hard to fix. If you're handy with wood work then take the bridge out, fill in the holes with wood filler and drill them again. If you're careful then nobody will ever know that you've messed with the wood.

If your bridge isn't too radical then you should even be able to get hold of slightly wider screws, eliminating any worries about it being visible altogether.

  • @sclogse1 However, if you aren't confident with woodwork then it would be worth giving it to a competent luthier. No point in screwing up your guitar.

  • @sclogse1 That address will need "h t t p : / / w w w." without the spaces before it to work properly, by the way.

  • @fredsassy5 because if you remove all the strings, there is nothing there to keep the neck tight, therefore the neck can warp a bit if you don't replace the strings right away

  • The face of this guy is priceless

  • At my shop - unless we're doing a full set-up, we never remove all the strings at once. Instead, we remove/replace one at a time. Much less traumatic on the guitar. It can take a good week for everything to "settle back in" when you remove all the strings at once and there's no reason to do it. It's a little harder to clean the fretboard, but still possible. This has created much higher customer satisfaction b/c the guitar "feels" like it always does - no weirdness.

  • why is it important to change one string at a time to maintain neck tension??

  • @fredsassy5 It's nowhere near as important as some people make it out to be. Unless you leave your guitar for literally hours after you take the strings off, your neck will be completely fine.

Some people will tell you that your neck will warp or even snap if take off all the strings. They're stupid and you can tell them so.

Personally I usually take them all off and use the opportunity to clean up the bits of the guitar that are hard to clean normally, like the pickups.

  • Correct way of winding up... but correct length ? lol

I always pull the string tight then loosen it of about 2.5 inches.

This gives me pretty much 3 turns on the peg for every string and it stays tuned.

  • @GuitarsOfVideoGames The easiest way to get the correct length - use the pegs themselves to measure. Go a little less than two pegs longer than the peg you're on. Also adjust this advice based on the type of guitar -- Gibson 3+3 pegs are a little farther apart... Fenders 6-up a little less. This will give you roughly 3-4 full winds on every peg, and you can do it in the dark. Try it !

  • Wut model les Paul is that

  • @Trenthodge23q I believe it is a Gibson Les Paul Custom.

  • So you left 1 wrap on the 6th string.... That's no gooood :S

  • I use Dunlop and Ernie Ball, I've tried d'addarios, great strings, just not my style. I wrap the string around the tuning post then run the string through the hole. I can get the strings winds right every time.

  • What Gibson les Paul is this

  • I'm guissing this guy doesn't sing

  • Ernie Ball Strings All The Way! got me some today for my les paul! (:

  • How come my strings dont wrap around the tuners 360 degrees but much less

  • DR nuff said =)

  • I like the early 80's porn music....lol totally distracted me.

  • this is very bad, should never leave it with 1 wind, unless you wanna retune after every note.

  • stop at 1:40

  • elixr r the bests

  • this may sound stupid but does anyone no how to remove this kind of til peice i wanna put on a bigsby with a whammy butt i dont no how to take this off my LES PAUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • one turn around the post cmon how rubbish is that-he never played the guitar i cant believe it wont go out of tune

  • damn d'addarios 1st,2nd and 3rd strings get black like shit!!!!!!!!

  • Musician's friend magazine said your supposed to change one string at a time and not to remove all the strings first because doing so could untension the neck and cause neck warpage. Any thoughts?

  • @IdolHans that might depend on the guitar

  • @IdolHans This really depends on the guitar, and if you have the strings off for 5 minutes or multiple hours.

Better be safe than sorry, do it 1 at a time.

  • @IdolHans bah... you won't hurt the guitar but might have to re-set the neck (a little trussrod fine-tune). Some people say you should never touch the trussrod, I say you should do it every time you change string at minimum. (and now with google it's really a no brainer)

  • dadario strings rule! i use the xl ones with the orange circle

  • Okay this is the only way anyone should be stringing their guitars. I tell my friends to watch this video every time they ask me cause its really the only good way

  • I hate stringing that way. I play Fender Strat 9s (Lite Gauge) 3510 Lites. Multiple wrappings just work better for me. When I did it using this method my strings didn't stretch enough and I wasted a pack -_-

  • whoa

  • Great, thanks for the stringing info. Now I have to go string my double neck... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • look at the inscription behind this guy. first it says 'acoustic strings' and since 0:13 it changes to 'electric strings' :)

  • ,ohouhh

  • don't need to wind it since I got locking tuners!!!

  • ._.

  • i like ernie ball strings better, but thats just me :/

  • @Cartmmman If you can scratch up another couple of bucks try Elixir strings. They sound great, nice and even up and down the guitar neck, last much longer than any other string I've tried....

  • @Cartmmman I hate Ernie Ball. lol I don't love D'ad either. I prefer Elixir, or Dean Markley.

  • @Cartmmman I agree! They're very fresh right out the bag and sound very crisp...shexy.

  • @Khampower See how they are in a couple of weeks...

    (lol)

  • @Cartmmman You must be joking?

  • @Cartmmman You must be joking?

  • @Cartmmman You cannot be serious!!

  • @Cartmmman You cannot be serious!!

  • Note that if you dont have secure nut on your guitar (most everyday guitars that is), its best to wind the string around the tuning key post at least twice before you start winding the nob. This ensures when after all your stringing and you start to play, your guitar does not go out of tune often. One of the main causes of the guitar tuning out is because most people only wind the string once - its not enought for some guitars...

  • @wjdghaks You misunderstood the point of tying the string backwards around the post. Its the best way. Windings around the post are to be avoided as they are too slow responding to tension changes. THATS where 'postwinders' go wrong!

  • that is one b-e-a-utiful guitar

  • Thumbs up, if you try this, and it's works!!!

  • The only thing you did wrong was using D'addario strings.

  • Great video...........simple easy ....jobdone .....

thanks for putting this vid up

  • Every good guitarplayer knows how to change strings, but anyways, i,ll rate you up to four, because your movie had a great quality:D watch my movies

  • that is a fuckin' BEAUTIFUL guitar

  • fuck the strings i want that guitar

  • The booklet that came with my Les Paul says for it to be re-strung one string at a time rather than taking all of the strings off at one, does it make a difference?

  • @goredeathrot It's just to make sure the truss rod doesnt like move if you get me ? :), just do it one string at a time theres no rush :).

  • Can't you insert the string from the front of the tail piece and run the string over the tail piece? I've seen guitars like this, and started wondering.

  • is it okay if i only loop once? it wont go any further

  • There is actually no point in removing the stopbar tailpiece! You can just slide the strings through the holes! lol

  • this guy sounds like he'd be a mad singer

  • and you can do this for all strings?

  • @snakkajak ye i just restrung my whole guitar it was really easy for all the strings

  • ok, kids, he does the all-important interlock on the post. but dont take all the strings off. unless you wanna take all day changing strings, or clean the guitar. cut each string off and change it one at a time(you might wanna loosen it before you cut it). i start with the low E.

and once you get em all on, stretch em by hand til all the slack is out and they stay in tune. then if your intonation is good and your nut or bridge doesnt bind, you might be able to stay in tune.

  • aren't you supposed to loop 3 times ?

  • Wow, that's hardcore, taking the bridge OFF the guitar! Lol. Don't do this at home. (Especially if you have a tremolo!) Time to start flames ERNIE BALL ALL THE WAY! I love the pro winder though.

  • man ahh.... i never taken all my strings off at once..wowaaaaa...seems it would need a truss adjustment after that...dunno just the way i have done it..one at a time and keeps the neck in same tension..now i just watched Taylor do there acoustics, and it seems ok with that, even though ill never do it with my Taylor to much money man..lol..my PRS cost to much money ill keep doin it the way i have been for 20 some odd years..if it aint broke dont fix it..lmao..but wow man..im blown away at this

  • also man you need 2 to 3 winds on a string..he i would say really dont know what the hell he's doin, after watching that again take the string up to the next peg cut it,put it in the peg hole bout 1/4 inch and wind you dont need to tie it..higher G string to high E you need a touch more string to wind..man this guy is killin this guitar..lol.

  • @ltuomela Check out Bill Baker's video. He's by far the best guitar tech in the world after that.

  • @ltuomela lol? You didn't get it either.....

  • @armsby no idea what your talkin about...lol..i mean wtf is comment 50 pages back..BUT..i guess i wasn't the only that took it wrong..string um and play um man...lmao

  • @ltuomela Yeah. At least you don't go saying "It's bad for the neck." Instead you tell the unaltered truth. Yeah, it would need a truss adjustment most likely. Why not do it though? It doesn't harm it and you can clean it all over then with no strings in the way. Nice, PRS. What kind?

  • @Songwriter4God is a Santana signature..bottom line, hands down, the best i have ever touched..and i have touched a few man..lol..infact aint touched my Les Paul since or my strat..but man, i clean my fret board with old strings on so i aint gotta worry about getting the strings all messed up..i just dont wanna play with a 5k guitar like that..lol..my Taylor acoustic, same thing man..infact last 20 years that's how i done it..its just preference i guess..

  • @ltuomela Nice. I'm a Modern Eagle guy, it's my dream guitar. The 2, note the 3. I'm a classic guy, two humbuckers. Nice, maybe sell the LP and strat, unless you like to display 'em. That's a good idea if you don't want mess up new strings.

  • @Songwriter4God yep them are sweet machines..very cool..yea i have like a bunch of old guitar on my wall's..some have pictures i have guitars..lol!...ill just keep the guitars as they play really well...ohhh and look really nice..course that's the most important..lmao..i call um my ladies..

  • That is a NICE guitar.

    Helpful video, too.

But still, that is one kickass axe.

  • Damnitt ive broken 2 high e strings tryin to stretch em lol

  • @stoutevan lucky for you it din't warp!!

  • ahhh i have one of the peg tools but i cant freaking find it, and i have 3 guitars to do

  • what about streching the string

  • This is exactly the way the booklet that came with my custom shop les paul shows how to do it. I sent my jr. to one of the best set up guys in MI and it came back looking just like this. Hardly any wraps. As far as all strings off at once I have heard it will not hurt your guitar if it is quick. I have had guitars shipped to me with almost all of the string tension removed and it didn't screw up the neck or any sych nonsense.

  • i have trouble try to string my 1-E coz it just slips out of my fingers

  • Oh my god, tell me this bitch did not take all of his strings of at once. And that even after Les Paul himself said that a string winder will prematurely age the tuner, you use one on a Les Paul guitar, then forget to stretch your strings? No body follow this video

  • You can take them off at once, but with care. You know, take tension of them, let the guitar sit, repeat, let guitar sit, remove. I do that when I treat the fretboard, clean it and so on.

Otherwise, better do one string at a time.

  • nice.. vid.. and helpful .. I have a question what can i use to avoid the oxidation on my strings..

hope you can answer.. = ^)

  • Clean your hands before play and clean the strings with a dry cloth after play (over the strings and between the strings and the frets).

I use a string cleaner "roll on" before play.

  • todd6138 is totaly correct

  • Helpful ....

  • to keep your guitar in tune, wind the string as many times as you can, don't start string it when it's tight, and it last longer, and doesn't break as easily

  • my guitar would need a whole set up and possible parts if I put strings on my guitar like that- absolutely stupid.kink the string next to the post once and push down the string under the hole. that is all you do I never even use a string winder- les paul himself said this prematurely ages your tuners. and never take all the strings off of your guitar ever. This video is wrong in essentially every area possible.

  • @todd6138,

but if I want to clean my fretboard?

I think, that you have to take all the strings off,

    to clean the fretboard

  • Never take all of the strings off at the same time, you run the risk of warping the neck

  • @guitgeo No. Not on a steel string. People like you are funny, you never realize they're without strings in the /factory/. Duh. Just adjust the truss afterwards. Nylon strings, yeah, they don't have a truss rod so NEVER take 'em all off. But on a steel string it's fine, and gives you a change to clean the guitar!

  • @guitgeo That's a common misconception, the guitar neck is not going to warp if you take all the tension off the neck. Truss rods are installed for the purpose of stabalizing the neck, tension or no tension.

  • @guitgeo it doesnt really matter if your changing strings right away...but if you leave it for like 2 days then it will start to warp.

  • Running the string around and under for steel strings serves NO useful function.Example: Did you ever see a piano strung this way? There are other important details which this video doesn't mention.

  • i highly doubt that.

  • Finally sum 1 who knows the proper way to string a guitar. That's about what I do but instead of pullin the string back I take it and slip it in the loop u made win going around the machine head. I use Dunlop instead of Daddario. They sound like GHS Boomers but there a whole lot more steardy. Buy some Dunlops and string it like I sed and u'll rarely loose tune.

  • D'Addario and Ernie Ball strings get rusty after 15 days. I prefer Elixir much more, as they last 5 times!

  • Amen

  • i absolutely cannot believe all this down syndromed comments on this video you're all just a bunch stupid kids arent ya?LOL

  • It's YouTube. What do you expect? There are alot of dumb fucks on this damn site.

    I love that Les Paul.

  • this has to be the most retarded stringing i've ever seen and this guy's sorta smiling makes things even worse, first off,he didnt even leave any slack on the strings...one winding?WTF?if you want to keep braking strings everytime you change them or constantly get out of tune than this is your way of changing strings

  • are yoo Les Paul?

  • Damn, that string's gonna slip hella out of tune and might even come off of the tuning peg from my experience. I'd recommend getting enough slack for two winds. Great tutorial on how to put one on in general, but they could've given a tip on the right amount of slack.

  • I thought the same.. I'd always been doing it more securely before, but recently I started doing it this way. Although it does seem less secure, I've (so far) never had a problem with it. The only change is that it's faster to do! That's just my own experience though of course :)

  • Hmm, interesting. Of course, I've never done this on an electric, only an acoustic. I also had not yet learned the stretching technique when I did this.

  • The way he wound the string around the tuning peg locks the string into place so it wont slip at all.

  • I completely agree with you. That's not a lot of windings at all. I give "two frets" of slack which gives me about 3-4 windings.

  • Have any of you guys used Dean Markley strings?.. They are fucking awesome!!! If you like drop tuning, they rock!!!

  • how do u take of the tail piece??

  • it slides right off.

  • Its the type of bridge he has. When i first restrung my guitar i thought holy shit i broke it . But i didnt it just comes of because the only thing keeping it together is the pull of the strings

  • yer i got ernie ball 11s on one of my guitars which are pretty nice and then i got my new guitar which had D'Addarios 10s and i much prefer the D'Addarios.

  • fuck u daddario's are the best

  • Good video!

  • D'Addarios ore the best strings

  • i heard DR is better

  • DR sucks the best are everly B52s

  • I haven't tried the B-52s, but I've heard good stuff. I use DRs on my Dean VMNT and I'm a big fan. They give a really tight string feel and last the longest of any strings I've tried, so they're great for playing metal. Their coated strings are also the best sounding I've found so far. I usually use D'Addarios on my which is kind of the "non-specialty guitar" so that it's well rounded.

  • I play two different guitars, regularly, and I use different strings depending on what I'm playing. I have a Gibson Explorer and a Dean VMNT. I use DRs on the V because I like the very tight string feel they give and they last longer than any other string I've tried, and since the V is my speed playing guitar they tend to go out fast. Then, I use D'Addarios on the explorer because they feel more like 'average' strings rather than having a specialty, so they're good for general playing.

  • that is true it almost felt like i was using a thicker string gauge with the DR because they do feel really tight.. which i like because some strings wear out too much after bending lots and tend to feel really loose after a while which i hate

  • @CoDyDaTallGuy ERNIE BALL!!!! Who invented the unwound third string? Ernie Ball! Who noticed beginners problems bending the third string? Ernie Ball! Who made Music Man? Ernie Ball!

  • @Songwriter4God Dude im telling you D'Addarios are ten times better than Ernie Ball. Besides Ernie ball last you about a month and D'Addarios last for a long time.

  • @CoDyDaTallGuy Dimebags DR are the best!!

  • @CoDyDaTallGuy i prefer ernie ball super slinky myself but i like the d'addarios also

  • @CoDyDaTallGuy Heck no they aren't. Ernie Balls are where it's at!!!! It's just my personal opinion though.

  • nice guitar!

  • thankyou i was stringing my guitar the wrong way soo badly.. i have d addario too

  • another tip to help stay in tune is that you want to tune up into the correct pitch.

this will keep your string tight as opposed to being sharp and then tuning down to the correct pitch.

this can create slack an untune your string once you start playing.

and where can i get that string cutter thing?

ive been using pliers for the longest time and the excess string totally destroys the soft interior inside my gig bag XD

  • I have a problem with my tailpiece. I keep breaking strings at the ball end on the tailpiece. I can't figure out what's wrong and its making me mad. I've concidered getting a wraparound bridge for my sg. My High E string breaks more than often. I'll break a set maybe a week after i've bought them. I would appreciate any help.

  • you have to be very careful when you string Highest E , Wind slowly and carefully ,make sure there is enough rolls around , do no tighten as if you want to tune up ,also keep in mind string brands ..gauges

  • Take it slow with the high E, they're already prone to things like that. Now then: because of the video can I assume you have a Gibson with the traditional stop-bar tailpiece or something similar? If so you might want to completely unstring it, take off the tailpiece and look it over really close. You may have sharp edges on the string holes. I saw that happen on a Les Paul a friend of mine had and we fixed it with some gentle filing.

  • not being a retard i think would be an improvement ;)...good luck HI5 lol

  • one tip

you shouldnt really take all of the strings off at once because it it has a little bit of a bow and arrow affect and the neck bends slightly so string each string one at a time

  • Why the hell does it buzz when you do that?

  • this was amazingly helpful for me, believe it or not lol

  • is there not one good effin video on stringing a guitar on the internet?!

not enough turns around the peg for sure!

  • take your string pull it tight and then measure the distance to the next tuning peg up (stringing A - measure from tuning post for A to the post for the D string) and then pull back the same length of string

  • no need for more than 1 turn. More turns and the string just slips over time, the fewer turns the more stable it will stay

  • jormkippur,

it's funny, I've been playing all sorts of styles of guitar all my life and I thought that more turns meant the strings hold better. Just goes to show you can always learn new tricks no matter how long you've been playing!

Do you do the same for the high e string? Isn't a bit risky to only wrap once?

  • Glad I could help! I usually wrap the high e string twice, but when I play tuned down with fatter strings it's enough with just one turn

  • Don't knock it until you try it. I now use this technique exclusively. Since I started stringing this way, I tune faster and the guitar stays in tune.

  • yes he did if you look he didn't put much slack on the string and the string was tight with only a few wraps around the post

and at the end look at the string on the fret board- it's tight.
