Yeah Jerry plays so tastefully, and these days he is just awesome.
I compare him with the greatest pedal steel guitarist ever, Buddy Emmons.
They are both masters of their instruments, both the best there that will ever be, and will probably stay that way as long as human beings live on planet earth.
Hey guys, let Chet take a ride. What is he chopped liver? Well, now we'll never know what great ride Chet would have taken. The young twits just ain't got no respect.
@ArkRed1 C'mon now - you know every person on that stage knew they were playing with a legend even then. For all we know, it was just a time limit on a TV show - they have all of 3 minutes to play!! I'd love to see Chet lay it out too but it's not the fault of the other musicians that he didn't get to.

@ArkRed1 This one wasn't about Chet, it was about the "young kids" showing what they've got. Everyone knows Chet and his talent, but he got them together to showcase them, not to showcase himself. That had to be at least 20 years ago, so all the guys except Chet, were just around 30 or a tad older. Chet loved to take a back seat and let new talent shine. Today, Bela, Mark and Jerry are onsidered masters of their craft. Kinda like Chet was in his day.
Great picking! It is a little disappointing that Chet doesn't take a ride, but as far as I'm concerned, that in no way detracts from the virtuosity of the other players.
I love this! ...BUT there's only one thing missing... what 'bout CHET... in case ya ain't heard, he's a danged sweet soloist in his own right! (Of course, I STILL added this to my favorites!)!
Doncha just get the eerie feeling that Bela Fleck is multitasking as he watches JD and still keeps his awesome talent swirling along? I should have known these folks would have collaborated, in fact, checking the album attributions have led me to many, esp. Bela. 20 years and still cookin', child. Wow.
I'd say this was taped in the early 80s. In the past two years I've been lucky to see Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, John Cowan, Tony Rice, Peter Rowan,Harvey Reid,Bela Fleck, and David Bromberg. I just gotta catch Mark O'Connor before die!
This song is on a great Jerry Douglas album called Everything's Gonna Work Out Fine from 1987. There was some fantastic bluegrass music being made around that time by this circle of musicians.

the musical talent of O'Connor, Fleck, and Douglas is inversely proportional to their fashion sense.

@thedict8or
John Duffey could for sure give them a run for their money in the areas of talent and lack of fashion sense to boot.

May I say....WOW!
I hope those who watch this realize what an amazing array of talent is on that stage.
I would also like to know when this was. I'm guessing late 70s or early 80s.
Chet Atkins-the absolute master. Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas! Not to mention Wasserman's steady bass pattern. wow. Wow! WOW!
