Fantastic rendition of this wintertime song, which I honestly hought it was Lightfoot singing? I love wintertime, but I guess ya gotta be back east to find it this year!
@iceaxe56 Actually, he did very well, give it a break, no one can match Lightfoot but this man does very well. And I say that as a DIEHARD Lightfoot fan.
Simon, nothing better then a winter night watching the snow fall past the street light with the one i love and think of this song, when the snow falls hard there is no sound of life, only peace and your singing, thank you for all your years spent perfecting the sound. my wife loves it also.
What a tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. I have to say, your version is a close rendition to his. I agree with the other comments here. It brings tear to my eyes when I listen. Well done...thanks...
I was searching for Gordon Lightfoot singing this song when I stumbled upon your version...omg I have listened to it several times! Excellent job...Mr Lightfoot would be proud! Very well done! :)
I love all of Gordon Lightfoot songs. In many of his songs is a mention of a glass of something- I guess wine. In "Second cup of Coffee" -if I can't stop this trembling hand from reachin for the phone, I'll be reachin for the botle Lord before this day is done.- These lyrics paint a picture for me, and I see myself as the person who reaches for the bottle. His music tells stories whic could probably describe real situations for millions. I guess thats why he sells so many records.
Very lovely cover! My voice is somewhat in Gordon Lightfoot's range and I've seen him perform in the early 80's. I used to sing this (over the phone) to a former girlfriend on those cold winter nights when we were far away. I miss her, and singing that song.
@emaclynch Hi! I heard him perform on some TV (?) show. He's 72, and yes, his voice is not what it used to be. I understand he's a recovering alcoholic. If true, damage likely has been done.
I searched all over you tube for a true to life of this fantastic song from my Favorite, Gordon Lightfoot...and couldn't find it until yours. What a great rendition. Thanks for posting it!
This is a really nice version of this song. I am sure gordon Lightfoot would be proud. I also like the video that goes with it.. I see that most people who have commented also like it. Great job.
After playing about half a dozen other YouTube covers of this song, I hit on this one. It's the only one that put me in mind of the audio magic of the original. Thanks, Simon. This song isn't that hard to sing actually, for someone with a really good voice (which you obviously have), but it requires constant attention to vocal nuances, and getting the arrangement to work is very tough for the ears of one who has heard and remembers the original. You've succeeded at both. Top flight result!
Awesome rendition... I can do a pretty god job at mimicking Gordi's voice, so I'm totally impressed with your cover of one of my favorite songs by "The Man" Thank you for that...
Mr Taylor - your cover is as close to Gordon's as I've ever heard. It's lovely, right down to the arrangement of the strings. Glad to see you are taking care of your birdies in the winter too.
This is a great song and you did it wonderful justice. Those that appreciate this song are the same that associate with "Rainy Day People." I hope to meet more that feel this way.
Very well done! This is one of the most beautifully written songs ever. The arrangement, the lyrics,... Doesn't get any better than this. Thanks for the great cover, and we can all be thankful for Gordon Lightfoot.
WOW...this is very close to the original in vocals, background and tempo. I am so totally impressed. SlTaylor3...you have a beautiful voice. This is one of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs. Have you done the Don Quizote song?? If so..would love to hear it! Thanks so much for your gift.
Great job. Sarah's (talent that she is) version sounds like it was done on a death bed. I usually figure that the person who wrote the song knows how it is supposed to be presented. This one sounds like Gord.
sitaylor3: Thanks for this. I was looking for Gordon's version and just happened to play this one. Very nice and in the original key and tempo. And MUCH better than McLachlan's too slow version.
This is a great cover! I was privileged to be front row and 4 seats right for his concert in Toledo, Ohio in June, '08, and though he didn't perform this song, he did about everything else. He looks tired, as though some illness is sucking the lifeblood out of him. His DVD(03?) is great! This rendition rings as true as the sleigh bells in his version. I enjoyed it immensely. Wonderful voice, with perfect pitch; something so few who sing covers have... Thanks!
Thank you for your very kind comments. One tries to be faithful to the intention of the artist, and it is very gratifying to know that it is appreciated.
@MusicallyDetermined Great cover? Not sure what you mean. My meaning of "cover" is it was previously done by the original writer/singer. Gordon Lightfoot wrote this song and recorded this song for his 1967 album, THE WAY I FEEL.
He did record TWO versions of this song; the second appears on the 1975 album GORD'S GOLD, Check wiki for any other info. Gordon was born on Nov. 17, 1938 and at 73 years old,he's been through alot.
I don't know if I'm just tainted because I listened to Sarah's recording of this song before any others, but this tempo seems, to me, to change the mood of the song. Sarah's slower tempo gives it a sense of longing, you know? This is almost folky, rather than a song about missing the one you love. Not that it's bad. If I didn't feel for the song the way I do, I'd like this.
Many thanks for your comments. Yes, it does sound a little quick, although it is exactly the same tempo as Gordon Lightfoot's original. I was a bit disappointed at Sarah McLachan's version - she has a wonderful voice, but this one was too slow and empty for me.
I dont know where Ponygirl is coming from, was she listening to the same song as I was. A terrific interpretation of an extremely difficult tune to sing. Its well known that when you do try someone else's work that you put your own stamp on it, in this case I thought you did. Who cares if you didn't its your moment and I really hoped you enjoyed it. Live your dream. Good luck
Why listen to the original artist when some basement hack will do?
