I've read that you can make a pretty darn good white wine out of those bugs. I could never do that myself, I don't drink alcohol and I think they're too cute to kill... but if you've got a surplus of them, you might try it.

@AlphaGodith um.....my problem with drinking caterpillar wine has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that its alcoholic or that the caterpillars are cute. i think it has more to do with the fact that it involves DRINKING CATERPILLARS.

@d2843 You don't DRINK the caterpillars, you strain them off after a while. If it tastes good, I don't see what makes it any grosser than eating a hamburger.

Where I live, they ate so much of the trees that there were no nuts or acorns for years after the infestation so the wildlife had no food. Bears would break into our cottage looking for something to eat. So they were harmful, indirectly though!
