  • Hey, thanks for this really great arrangement and instruction. It's the first time I've been able to play in this style. I find your music and video very practical and easier to play along with.

  • so i play the mandolin and have been for about a year and a half... i have NEVER heard a version of blackberry blossom like this

  • Wow, well played. This video makes me wanna ditch my guitar and start learning the mandolin.

  • @Moodo1 do it, its really funny! =)

  • sounds great wow classy

  • am learning this on my 1895 Bowlback mandolin..

  • am learning this on my Bowlback 1895 mandolin that I got from the

    thrift centre in El Aaiun..

  • This is so beautiful.. Why don't bluegrass mando players use the little finger in the first position? Classical players do.

  • This is so beautifully played.. I am a guitar player learning to play the mandolin. Something puzzles me: Why is it that most bluegrass/folk mandolin players don't use the little finger in the first position? (Classical mandolin players do.)

  • Ever since I started playing my mandolin, I've always looked to your videos as a tool for bluegrass. The medley you just played was pretty cool!

  • you will never hear it that slow.......... ha

  • hey im new in mandolin where can i found this tabs!? actually i need both mandolin and guitar ... if u have it better

  • You can find the tab and pay along Mp3's for mandolin and guitar on our website, at BluegrassBooksOnlinedotcom.

  • hey im a 16 year old girl from new brunswick canada, my boyfriend got me a mandolin for my birthday in june and this really helped so much! thanks for all the help! :)

  • I just love it !

  • did anyone eles think that some parts had a slight Oasis sound?

  • I like this tuned better slowed down. Great job!

  • Hey Rick! I have both of your books and LOVE them! I got the mando book just for this tune but i like them all. I got the guitar book a few months later so i can learn them on both. Great books, great cd's! Ive only been playin for about a year and even the old timers are impressed with the versions of tunes ive learned. Thanks!

  • @ejones2219

Thank you so much for the kind words about the books. I'm glad you are enjoying them and that they have taught you new versions of tunes to play. Don't forget to email me if you have any questions about the lessons in the books or the free lessons on our website. Keep Pickin'

  • Great version!

  • I like this version o the tune.

    Thanks!

  • Love it, could listen forever!

  • Thanks Bro: Just bought a mandolin and this is exactly the sort of lesson I need to get kicked in. Hard to change over from playing the guitar - everything's so awkward at first!

  • what model mandolin do you have?

  • Really good video. I have my grand-grand-father's mandolin, I hope it is possible to learn this!!!!

  • excellent!

  • Beautiful! I'm glad you're not playing super fast, makes it easier to figure it out.

  • Notice how he plays downstroke on the beat and upstroke off the beat. That's the way it should be done. Sounds easy but learn it wrong and it is so difficult to unlearn.

  • Very nice sounding, love it

  • At last, someone not showing off playing at 1000mph.

Why oh! why does almost all musicians think we want to see how fast they have learned to play an instrument?

    THIS IS PURE CLASS hmmmmmmmmm!

  • agreed. i hate it when a video is labeled lesson or how to and the guys got this dick smirk on his face and says "this is how you do it" and plays as fast as he can

  • @BlueSuedeTom I agree with you!!! But I really would of liked to hear him play this song up to speed... I think it helps to hear it fast.. Cuz that's how people play it.... and if you want to get together with people and you can only play it this fast..... well your going to look like you don't know what your doing.... (unless if they really do decide to play it this slow but I have never heard it like this) huh But this is an awesome lesson!!!!! just the right tempo for learning :D

  • Very good versioning of blackbery blossom.

  • omg that was beautiful, it toook my breath away. I want a mandolin for my birthday sooo bad!

  • a week ago I got one for my birthday, I't's such a beautiful instrument! =)

  • How simple it is beautiful will learn it

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who plants a finger, and sticks out his middle one, on his picking hand.......lol.

  • lol I thought I was the only one too.

  • this is that kind of song were you have to smile

  • Terrific thanks.

  • That is a beautiful instrument

  • now just need an F5 mando preferably Loyd Loar,

  • Is Bluegrass played in any particular scale or mode?

  • Check out our free lessons page and click on the May 2006 lesson on Bluegrassbooksonlinedotcom and find a great tune from the Father of Bluegrass Music.

    Carrie

  • I'm not quite familiar with this kind of music, I do however love this song, could anyone recommend me some names of good musicians in this style?

  • Bluegrass Music: Bill Monroe, Sam Bush, Doyle Lawson, Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Clarence White, Steve Kaufman, David Grier, Brian Sutton, John Duffey (with Seldom Scene), Flatt and Scruggs, Jimmy Martin, Stanley Brothers to name a few.

  • You forgot Ry Cooder

  • Bill Monroe Ricky Scaggs Sam Bush Marty Stuart are all good mandolin and bluegrass players. This song is slowed down considerably so imagine playing this 3times as fast and having a banjo ,fiddle, andguitars jamming all together its beautiful boy'o

  • That is very relaxing to listen to. Well played.Your talent is very much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to entertain us.

  • Nice version played at a good speed for learning...

  • Thanks.

  • I loved your version for this song.

    Grats xD

  • I've never heard or played Blackberry Blossom at that speed or the rythm played at that speed, I don't even play it with those notes, but it sounds good

  • that was beautiful

  • thankyou kindly, this is a wonderful tune...

  • I can't thank you enough for this! I really can learn to train my finger memory from your videos, they're not at breakneck speed! Blessings.

  • how about a chord breakdown for the song. I guess I could sound it out. anyone ever video chords and then have someone else dub over leads or ad instruments?? A virtual band ha ha.

  • Nicely done and explained-Makes me want to try and learn it again. What kind of Mandolin is that- it almost has the cut of a gibsin f9 on the neck

  • not a fan of the 4th finger, eh? ;)

  • planting the third finger!!! Hurray!!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one!!!

  • who's playing the music behind you? is it actual people or a cd?

  • I played/recorded all of the backup tracks, then soloed over that.

I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks, Rick

  • Really? So you can play mandolin, banjo, guitar, and whatever else was back there? Amazing.

  • Wow, I don't even have a mandolin yet, and I'm just listening to this because it's so beautiful. Great work, and God bless you for giving musicians free lessons like this.

  • I can't believe how bad-ass this sounds played slow; and it is an awesome piece to practice my bass to. We sound pretty funky together.

  • hi there,

i'm trying to figure out the left-hand technique. i was wondering, is the weight of the mandolin mostly held by the palm of your hand at the index finger knuckle or by the thumb. i notice that, mostly, the thumb is behind the neck, but sometimes it comes around and doesn't seem to be supporting it. is there any particular reason why the position changes in these instances?

    thanks very much.

  • Pure comfort. These positions are comfortable "for me". Also, I'm not supporting weight with the left hand. I'm holding the mando with chest, right arm and right leg. When you play, play comfortably!

  • God bless you for sharing your great musical experience. Very very good. Hello from Mexico !

  • one of my favorite songs ever to play, this particular video I crank it up and jam along.. thanks for the post and Peace from Alaska for now.

  • Thank you Very much!! that is a great help! x

  • Hey, could you tell me where you found the music for this, because everytime i look it up (black berry blossom) it comes up with the same sheet music and it isnt the same notes as you play (and i like yours better lol... email me if you have the time) thank you! xx Rebecca

  • Thank you Rebecca. I'm glad you liked it. You can find the tab and the accompanying free lesson

    at bluegrassbooksonline com

  • You've certainly got an interesting left hand fingering, but it sounds beautiful.

  • Hope u dont mind me saving this to my favs... i play mandolin also and i think that sounds beautiful x

  • Thank you sir!!

  • THANKS

  • I have that same book/CD combo. What Transposition speed are you using in this video?

  • MrMandolin, I record all of the lessons at the same speeds I recorded the JamTunes tracks, 106 bpm for the slower tracks and 170 bpm for the faster track. You can find the tab and lesson for this version of BBlossom at our site, bluegrassbooksonline , along with several other free tunes and lessons.
