A great song that fell foul of the 'native language only' rule re-introduced in 1977. It would have finished even higher had it been sung in English. Belgium managed to escape it that year due to having already chosen their entry when the rule was brought in.
Germany also were allowed to sing in English, because they had chosen their entry early on. But this song is so good, that it shouldn't even have matterered, that it was sung in Finnish. But alas, Finland never has had much luck in this contest.
I have a tendency to not like popular Finnish entries as much as many other people do. Their entries from 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 always get praise from others, but they don't do much for me. But instead, I like a few less popular Finnish entries (1981, 1986 and 1991) very much. However, this is a time, where I have to join the crowd. "Lapponia" must be Finland's best entry ever. I can't believe, that they won with the awful "Hard Rock Halleljuah", but didn't even reach the top 5 with this.
Monica was sick doing this. You could see that in her face.Desperately to do her part. That missed.Monica is now in her sixties doing shows.Tapering off.I still love her.
I was a bit mystified as to this tune's appeal at first, but it's grown on me. I think I would have preferred a more folky, mysterious arrangement, as I think it would mesh with Monica's Yma Sumac register in the bridge a bit better. Her performance (her whole stage presence and personality, not just her singing) puts this one over the top.
But her stage presence and the power of the performance is part of the appeal, as far as I'm concerned. Wouldn't it be like being annoyed by Donald Duck because he sounds like a duck?
That's kind of what I meant. I initially felt the song itself was rather weak, but Monica's excellent performance of it and wonderful stage presence make it shine. (Then I saw the other songs in the Finnish final. Gasp! No wonder this won!)
Absolutely one of Finlands best from the 70's! Great performance and song. I think that Monica had some troath problems that night (Like Edea from '98) but i'm not sure. If that's true though, she managed VERY well!
I think it was nice it wasn't extremly underrated (It ended 10th), but should of course got a lot higher!
You´re right, she had just had an angina? if I remember correctly (at least a bad flue) and hence her voice was not on its top form, go imagine! And I love her sexy (!) accent, she being a Swedish-speaking Finn. What blews this otherwise perfect performance a bit is the chorus, in my opinion it should be more subtle.
Yes, a wonderful song, one of my all-time Finnish favourites. A great melody and what a performance. (Incidentally, this was the last entry to give Finland 12 points before a 29-year gap without those.) Irresistible, and I also how the lyrics and melody blend. Wonderful, and yes, another underrated entry from Finland.
She and Fredi are my favorite Finnish singers.........now she lives in West Palm Beach, Florida :)

This woman rocks! Few months after London she made headlines by taking Finnish domestic flight which became highjacked!

Indeed, probably Finlands best from the 70's, and again it's underrated -_-
It deserved to be at least in the TOP 5!!!

I did actually like the chorus quite well, very optimistic! :-)
I can't say she has a sexy accent, (:-P) but Finnish is a very charming language and Swedish a very cute one so it ends up really adorable for me!
