I first viewed this several years back. Sincere thanks to original poster. Have sent this along to numerous friends in the interim who I know consider 'jass' not unlike foreign language with always positive response. I return to it often. It struck me recently that the last 10 seconds, where Tatum reprises melodic theme toward ending ... and you know this was extempore ... may just be the best 6th of a minute I've ever heard played on the instrument.
Okay I'll make up my mind. It's genius; it wrenches at my soul in a fashion mere words can't describe. And you can read what you like into that my fine friend.
it is said that fats waller was performing in a night club, and, art tatum walked in. fats stood up and said to the crowd, "ladies and gentleman, i play the piano, but tonight God is in the house."
Genius. There is a guy in Glasgow who can play like Art. He's a resident at the Baby Grand restaurant at Charing Cross, and has been for 25 years. Should jot the guy. Never wondered why he did not put some of his stuff on the tube. Still, the runs are the mark of the master, and the master is Tatum.
damn. the first time i saw this i was just awe struck. i dont even know. its just soo good. there truely is no words to describe this. thank you ben and thank you art for all you have done for the world of jazz and music as a whole.
I am working on a posting about the many varied tones of the saxophone. With Webster I need to provide two examples, the breathy sound of his ballads and the gruff sound (caused by singing while playing) that got him the nickname of the Brute. But I made room by omitting the hack Paul Gonsalves though it might be good to include him so people can see what a 3rd rate saxophonist sounds like.
Thank you thank you thank you !!!!! I had the original LP, lent it, lost it, and been looking for it ever since .... absolutely one of the most amazing albums ever ..... muddleminded

Art Tatum was the best pianist ever and Ben Webster was one of the few in the league with Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins.
