Some of these dudes should think about throwing in a quarter rest once in a while to make it seem like they're at least trying to form a phrase, and not just blow through your bag of licks as fast as possible, and then start repeating them over and over. So fucking lame.

It isn't just a single style of music. It manifest itself in so many different genres of music (jazz, r&b, rock, etc.). This is blues. Maybe not traditional, but definitely not cliched.
@dann3th3manni3 - No. This about 90 percent shred and 10% blues AT BEST. This guy is a good player, but he is overplaying. He needs to turn down the overdrive and throw away his wah and then try to play. He'd be stuck.
@airforcejim Dumbass, Dan has been my best friend since 1979, He does Eddie V better than EV, does Steve Vai better than SV and so on. He shredds em all apart. Watch his other youtubes, buy his cd's and go see him live.
@Dragonflail omg shut the fuck up. comparing this stupid gay ass queer to evh and srv is like comparing your fucking mom to meagfan fox. shut the fck up. this guy is ok but quit sayong he is better than every guitarist. you probably dont even play guitar cum guzzler

I really don't know what all the trolling is about shred. You have to remember that most of the metal shred stuff was very based on blues soloing. So why can't we appreciate both? And besides, I personally like seeing a combo, the best of emotion and technical skill
@verbw002 No, all moderen techniques originate from all music styles. You cant forget that there was spanish music, classical, Jazz, etc. Most techniques combine those
@mychem1914777 Jazz was blues based, spanish and classical weren't I agree, but all modern music, whether or the artist knows it, has a large blues bais
If you chumps are gonna rip on Peters you might as well go thru the roll call of those
passing themselves as "blues" guitarists: Walter Trout, Tinsley Ellis, Smokin' Joe
Kubek, Joe Bonamassa, Tommy Castro and, yes, even Clapton. He isn't trying to
pass himself off as a bluesman. The dude, like Beck, plays it all. The blues is a feeling? Then tell that to the guys I just mentioned, they think it's a new outlet for
How can people who sore lower beat people in the same contest who scored higher!?! Total crock of shit!!! Its just a big marketing ploy to get data on players and so they break it into 3 nights as to not interrupt business. Then lower scores advance based on who played on that night! not based on who's better in the region! I lost by ONE POINT ON MY NIGHT BUT BEAT PLAYERS ON THE OTHER NIGHTS!!! THE JUDGE TOLD ME AND IM 25, THE WINNERS ON MY NIGHT WERE LIKE 40+ BS!!! I should advance BS!!
Part of what helps you win is putting an original spin on your "blues" playing, and stage presence. It doesn't matter how good you are, if you go in and just stand there motionless and cop SRV and BB King licks you aren't going to win. It was cool when he played the guitar behind his head for so long without making mistakes. A little bit much on the high energy hard rock, but the playing was solid. He had some good non-traditional licks. No surprise he made it to the finals.
@AWHNJ This guys sucks no feel at all in one lick he plays. All a bunch of smoke and mirrors with Niggas like this. That acoustic set is about the fucking worse I have ever heard. GC is all about promotion and King of The Blues contests mean shit in the real world. To quote Hubert Sumlin when they told him about Hendrix "These young boys can sure play circles around me but I got something they just don't know about."
@ONENIGGER2ANOTHER chill man, this guy's not half bad. he's no stevie, hendrix, or BB. but blues is how you interpret it. if this is what it is to him so be it, a little on the rocky side, but its blues none the less. everybody has there own style, just look at buddy guy then bb king, hendrix then clapton, they dont all sound the same. blues has no limits.
i know 2 guitar players from my town of 2000 people that would own this guy in their sleep, and neither of them made it past the 1st round, i just jammed with 1 of them today and he is pretty much a stevie ray vaughan prodegy.
I just made store finals this year. The other guy that made it that night was such a douche. He was going around to each of the contestants that looked nervous and playing these crazy fast licks while he was talking them. Talk about a douche bag.lol
@trumpetgod2010 For real these fucking wankers don't know how to let a note breathe and must have something against leaving some empty space for ambience. Guys like this are a dime a dozen. Blues is defined by feeling thats a fact, but people express there feelings in different ways, thats why there are so many genres. not everyones feelings/soul can be portrayed with a slow shuffle and a repetitive 3note solo like bbking.

STOP being such a dick you guys.....lets see you doing all that and in case you didnt notice they play electric and acoustic yes his style its a bit more shreddy but man hes great its his style other done that too but they added a bit of rythm but the rythm its from drums bass and a guitar so he shreded.......and when he plays with acoustic he is doin hes rythm......cuz hes alone
I agree with the majority of comments. Give a man a hollowbody gretsch and a blues backup band, but once a shredder always a shredder. Not bluesey enough. Just look at his technique, it isn't bad, but it's that of a shredder. No blues player's technique looks even remotely like that.
hey folks, you probably don't even know this guy, he can play anything you throw at him in any style, blues is about what you're feeling and personality, get some and you might be as great as him one day!!!
Him and Josh both are too shreddy...it's too angus young...it makes me want to hurl. I mean I'm no professional player myself, but when I hear the blues I want it to make me stand up in my chair, stomp my foot and say "hallelujah" ... this doesn't do that. I makes me want to go outside and kick a puppy. Blues is supposed to have soul. This is about 1% soul and about 99% shred. Give me a break. If this is about blues, how did he even make it to the finals?
I just wish for one these guys to play though a simple one channel amp that is cranked up just enough to get that tiny bit of tasty natural distortion and only focused on tone, adventurous melodic runs that don't stretch out too far from the blues and very clean technique... too many fx, ear bleeding distortions, cliches and non blues playing is what I see... meh.
@ImOnTheTube This isn't the average blues player from the bar contest. This is the King of Blues. The goal is to be the best player. Unfortunately playing the good ol' fashion blues bass line just isn't going to cut it.
@antihax91 Who said anything about average? Simple equipment does not necessarily mean simple music. Fact is if you can't hit the sweet spot of the crowd and judges you'll have to resort to being overwhelming with fx, speed and licks... its much easier to do that... especially if you have the fx.
the first 2 minutes were my style of blues, however, when he started sweep picking. he lost all of the soul that he barely portrayed in his playing. he didnt have the soul that real bluesmen like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Clapton, BB King, Albert King, etc. even slash, although heavily into rock of the 80s, never sweep picked...
Shredding? Yeah right. These people obviously know nothing about the blues. He's not the worlds greatest blues player, but this song is by no means shredding. learn your shit.
@oUhOhHEADSHOTo roflol .. this is shredding in EVERY IMAGINABLE WAY...are you kidding me? I've NEVER in my LIFE heard a blues player do this stuff. "learn our shit?" Okay, here's something for you to learn. Blues and Jazz players in their earliest form, when they soloed they actually tried to imitate the human voice. That's why the wah was invented, that's why slide was used, to give voice to the guitar. This guy completely robbed the guitar of any voice at all.
AWESOME PLAYER! I don't get the comments about "shredding"...what's up with that and all the derogatory comments...this is pure blues by an incredibly talented musician folks. And he's certainly a lot better in my opinion than the guy that won in the end.
i just watched all of the king of the blues finalist videos, and in my opinion kirby kelly should not have won. it should have been josh gooch or roosevelt collier. fuckin judges.
Guys, He's playing a Gretsch. Brian Setzer is a rockabilly/bluesman who to shreds on a Gretsch. Naturally, Setzer's shredding is a little more "bluesy" but give the guy a break.
guys honestly, there are MANY types of BLUES. i know that shredding and burning down the neck isn't traditional, but SRV, Angus Young, Slash, etc. They all play a form of blues, the faster and more technical side of it. It still is blues. Slow blues is great and all, there are other spectrums of it. so just pipe down. Not like these great players care about your bullshit anyways. They rock and i bet most of you trolls can't even play a G cord. XD
@DeadMusket Many types of blues? Thanks Captain Obvious. You didn't get the point which doesn't surprise me. You sound like an imbecile when you try berating people here who voice opinions. Can't play a G chord? I would guess most people here could easily kick your lame ass in guitar playing. Easily. You can tell by your comments that you know nothing and love proving it. Go back to your skateboard and X box simpleton.
@DeadMusket blues was originated by the slaves, and isnt about how fast you can play, and definatly shouldnt be a contest, its all about feeling, if you had any clue what blues is or what it stands for you wouldnt say there are spectrums of it.
Blues? Really? Is this or is it not a blues competition? The acoustic stuff was fine. If it was based on just that it would be fine. But the shredding? NOT AT ALL FAIR TO THE TRUE BLUES-PEOPLE! Judges, get a grip. This is a BLUES competition. So if I were to go to a shredding competition and play blues really well, I should win? Seriously? Great player, should NOT have won on the technical point of NOT PLAYING THE BLUES. Ask BB or Albert King if it sounded like blues.
@4001XBASS Putting the words "blues" and "competition" in the same sentence doesn't make much sense to start with. Let alone figuring out how the "judging" is done.
Obviously the guy's good and has some real talent, but, as stated before, this is shredding to a blues backing band. As soon as he put the guitar behind his head, id'd had enough. I bet his band is good. This, to me, is not blues.
like someone spitting all over you to make a point - ok, so you can i play - iT ALL COMES DOWN TO TASTE - this is all about "look what i can do" - i didn't like it. If it's a competition who judges it? The best blues are BLUE - not a showcase for technique, but feeling. This is overly-excited jibberish, no story being told. Competitions are dumb. Among the greats is the best you can be. This is childish - all show, no go.
This guy beat me out in Arlington Hights and I think he should of won compared to the guy who actually won. Much more feeling and I know it was a blues comp but he is still very very skilled in the blues and if you don't think so you know nothing. I will probably see Dan again soon and plan on beating him this time! lol Well I'll try because The King of The Blues is back for 2010!
catch dan's band in chicago and around the west side...The West Side Winders...he's a friend and heckofa nice guy. BY the way, the acoustic performance here lacked because of the problems they had with the PA and mics at the time of his performance. Too heavy on the lows and not high enough on the highs. I think his skill level is equally amazing on acoustic.....Johnny Ray
@nixjag1 O i know man im just so not one to find speed impressive i mean i know when i hear someone play and i get a chill down my body that they have got it rite ya know? I mean i can listen to shred just rather not. Many people do it i like originality like Tom Morello who has his own sound totally different with shred blues and his rap guitar stuff its awesome
@TheFuzzFunk thats not shredding, hes playing the same pentatonic blues scales and playing all of that blues influenced stuff, hes playing a lot of stuff that slash would play, and slash is considered blues rock
@austinhull20 this isn't "King of the Blues Rock" ... it's king of the blues. It's no surprise to me that this guy didn't win...I mean the guy's good, but when he gets up there going acid trip like that, I'm have a hard time trying to find B.B. King at the AC/DC show. It kind of makes him look like a hack.
@austinhull20 well when u look at it it IS shredding i mean yeah from a technical point its in the pentatonic but cmon thats not quite bluesy if u ask most pp
@austinhull20 hey dont even compare him to slash, hes playing lots of phrases that slash has no idea how to write, im talking about major rips, intervallic leaps, ala zakk wylde across the neck rips, all of that shit
@TheFuzzFunk ~ playing the blues is a feeling not an individual style. "shredding" as you call it, has it's place in all music. All that matters is how one applies it. Just my thought, please don't send a responce if an argument is going to rise up out of it. 2 Fingers Brother :)
@TheFuzzFunk you don't undestand - if you're competed in King of the Blues, you know that this isn't a blues contest - it's a guitar playing contest. the ghost of Jimi Hendrix probably wouldn't win if he entered
@Omgshoes017 I mean that would suck if Jimi's Ghost was in and lost haha These guys are real good musicians. I love how everyone wants to rip me one cause i called it shredding people you know what i mean when u think blues do u think Malmsteen? nah i think stevie ray and hendrix even Page.
my mom thinks this guy is hot lol

I wish they'd make people in these stupid contests play rhythm solos. It would get real quiet fast...lol
Music is not a contest, play it because you love it and it makes you happy.

Blues isn't a technique. It's a feeling
charlie8884 1 year ago 36

I just wish for one these guys to play though a simple one channel amp that is cranked up just enough to get that tiny bit of tasty natural distortion and only focused on tone, adventurous melodic runs that don't stretch out too far from the blues and very clean technique... too many fx, ear bleeding distortions, cliches and non blues playing is what I see... meh.
ImOnTheTube 1 year ago
@ImOnTheTube This isn't the average blues player from the bar contest. This is the King of Blues. The goal is to be the best player. Unfortunately playing the good ol' fashion blues bass line just isn't going to cut it.
antihax91 1 year ago
@antihax91 Who said anything about average? Simple equipment does not necessarily mean simple music. Fact is if you can't hit the sweet spot of the crowd and judges you'll have to resort to being overwhelming with fx, speed and licks... its much easier to do that... especially if you have the fx.
ImOnTheTube 1 year ago
@ImOnTheTube This guy can really play guitar.
deapwavelio 1 year ago
the first 2 minutes were my style of blues, however, when he started sweep picking. he lost all of the soul that he barely portrayed in his playing. he didnt have the soul that real bluesmen like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Clapton, BB King, Albert King, etc. even slash, although heavily into rock of the 80s, never sweep picked...

Shredding? Yeah right. These people obviously know nothing about the blues. He's not the worlds greatest blues player, but this song is by no means shredding. learn your shit.
oUhOhHEADSHOTo 1 year ago
@oUhOhHEADSHOTo roflol .. this is shredding in EVERY IMAGINABLE WAY...are you kidding me? I've NEVER in my LIFE heard a blues player do this stuff. "learn our shit?" Okay, here's something for you to learn. Blues and Jazz players in their earliest form, when they soloed they actually tried to imitate the human voice. That's why the wah was invented, that's why slide was used, to give voice to the guitar. This guy completely robbed the guitar of any voice at all.
airforcejim 1 year ago
I heard way better guitar players than him.
Shane15williams 1 year ago
AWESOME PLAYER! I don't get the comments about "shredding"...what's up with that and all the derogatory comments...this is pure blues by an incredibly talented musician folks. And he's certainly a lot better in my opinion than the guy that won in the end.

Guys, He's playing a Gretsch. Brian Setzer is a rockabilly/bluesman who to shreds on a Gretsch. Naturally, Setzer's shredding is a little more "bluesy" but give the guy a break.
TheExiledTexan 1 year ago
guys honestly, there are MANY types of BLUES. i know that shredding and burning down the neck isn't traditional, but SRV, Angus Young, Slash, etc. They all play a form of blues, the faster and more technical side of it. It still is blues. Slow blues is great and all, there are other spectrums of it. so just pipe down. Not like these great players care about your bullshit anyways. They rock and i bet most of you trolls can't even play a G cord. XD
DeadMusket 1 year ago
@DeadMusket Many types of blues? Thanks Captain Obvious. You didn't get the point which doesn't surprise me. You sound like an imbecile when you try berating people here who voice opinions. Can't play a G chord? I would guess most people here could easily kick your lame ass in guitar playing. Easily. You can tell by your comments that you know nothing and love proving it. Go back to your skateboard and X box simpleton.

2 camels in a tiny car motherfucker! XD
DeadMusket 1 year ago
@DeadMusket blues was originated by the slaves, and isnt about how fast you can play, and definatly shouldnt be a contest, its all about feeling, if you had any clue what blues is or what it stands for you wouldnt say there are spectrums of it.
gromshit101 1 year ago
Blues?
4001XBASS 1 year ago
@4001XBASS Putting the words "blues" and "competition" in the same sentence doesn't make much sense to start with. Let alone figuring out how the "judging" is done.
vinzorelli 1 year ago
Obviously the guy's good and has some real talent, but, as stated before, this is shredding to a blues backing band. As soon as he put the guitar behind his head, id'd had enough. I bet his band is good. This, to me, is not blues.
neffrocks 1 year ago
like someone spitting all over you to make a point - ok, so you can i play - iT ALL COMES DOWN TO TASTE - this is all about "look what i can do" - i didn't like it. If it's a competition who judges it? The best blues are BLUE - not a showcase for technique, but feeling. This is overly-excited jibberish, no story being told. Competitions are dumb. Among the greats is the best you can be. This is childish - all show, no go.
michaelhintongtr 1 year ago
it some sor of blues but i dont know the shredding makes it sound different
produccionesmiranejo 1 year ago

FuzzFunk, I hate to say it but shredding is
the way of the blues these days. Just listen to Walter Trout, Joe Bonomassa,
Tommy Castro, Tinsley Ellis or Smokin'
Joe Kubek. Some guys still manage to
do it tastefully, more don't.
nixjag1 2 years ago 2
@nixjag1 O i know man im just so not one to find speed impressive i mean i know when i hear someone play and i get a chill down my body that they have got it rite ya know? I mean i can listen to shred just rather not. Many people do it i like originality like Tom Morello who has his own sound totally different with shred blues and his rap guitar stuff its awesome

you gotta know this aint the man when hes payin more attention to facial expressions and flipping his hair than he is playing the blues.

peaceman1665 1 year ago
@TheFuzzFunk thats not shredding, hes playing the same pentatonic blues scales and playing all of that blues influenced stuff, hes playing a lot of stuff that slash would play, and slash is considered blues rock
austinhull20 1 year ago 31
@austinhull20 this isn't "King of the Blues Rock" ... it's king of the blues. It's no surprise to me that this guy didn't win...I mean the guy's good, but when he gets up there going acid trip like that, I'm have a hard time trying to find B.B. King at the AC/DC show. It kind of makes him look like a hack.

@austinhull20 well when u look at it it IS shredding i mean yeah from a technical point its in the pentatonic but cmon thats not quite bluesy if u ask most pp
grahamm13 10 months ago
@austinhull20 hey dont even compare him to slash, hes playing lots of phrases that slash has no idea how to write, im talking about major rips, intervallic leaps, ala zakk wylde across the neck rips, all of that shit
HiImJerry8 9 months ago
@austinhull20 slash is shit rock.
Macsk8ing 9 months ago
@TheFuzzFunk ~ playing the blues is a feeling not an individual style. "shredding" as you call it, has it's place in all music. All that matters is how one applies it. Just my thought, please don't send a responce if an argument is going to rise up out of it. 2 Fingers Brother :)
crispycritterz34 1 year ago
@TheFuzzFunk you don't undestand - if you're competed in King of the Blues, you know that this isn't a blues contest - it's a guitar playing contest. the ghost of Jimi Hendrix probably wouldn't win if he entered
Omgshoes017 1 year ago
@Omgshoes017 I mean that would suck if Jimi's Ghost was in and lost haha These guys are real good musicians. I love how everyone wants to rip me one cause i called it shredding people you know what i mean when u think blues do u think Malmsteen? nah i think stevie ray and hendrix even Page.
