  • Wonderful song and great message. Black Unity is great in theory, but I doubt that it'll ever happen. We have to do better though; not to prove others wrong but just to do well ourselves. I'm also sick of Blacks killing each other. I don't think that we all have to love each other, but we could at least stop hating on each other.

  • THis song should be the black national anthem!!

  • Legend.

Where do you even start to write a song like this.

  • is it?

But let us not be so satisfied,

for tomorrow can be an even brighter day.

Beautiful end to a great, great song.

  • Real Intellecutal Music

  • For the Old and New, Curtis is for me and you and you and you

Real Intellecutal Music for then, now and Beyond

  • Musical genius...often imitated never duplicated. His message of the 1960 and 1970 are still relevant today. No one (IMO) can match his caliber today .

  • man roll up to this and reflect people

  • What else is there to say about this? THe ultimat tribute any of us can give to Curtis Mayfield is this....When I listen to this it makes me want to be a better person. The best American music since the Jazz/Standard era.

  • Listen to the message, we are "Darker Than Blue" Light skin or dark skin, we are still Darker than Blue. Don't be so hung up on complexions. Stick together my people!!!

  • Yes indeed! Thanks for the reminder.

  • Also sampled on Usher's new song with Jay-Z, "Best Thing"

  • dont make em like they used to!

I think they might mind if you tell the whole story. No one willing to shout out..

    no samples...

  • Sign of the times Grand master flash. Another Classic.

  • He is the DEAL!

  • I love his music, especially this song.

  • darkskin people keep yo head high

  • This song is so profound. Black people.........we will get it together

  • Damn this song is deep, a true soul classic.... Mr. Mayfield was the man! If only music nowadays was lke this *SIGH*.... May he rest in peace

  • This was also sampled for....

    Cormega - Intro

    Empire - Nowhere

  • They sampled this song on Usher's new album on the song he has with Jay-Z called "Best Thing"...& on Tru Life's Tru York Mixtape on the Jay-Z intro

  • A master at seeing the soul and giving it a voice. A genius whitout comparison.

  • Just wonderful music

  • A master. This was real music. God rest the beatiful soul, Curtis Mayfield..A genius beyond belief...

  • :::)))

  • Waoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!!!!!!

  • man!

this album is off the chain!

    For real!

  • Bless you Curtis.

  • Far and away Curtis Mayfield's best album, and this is certainly one of the standout tracks. The Superfly Curtis was alright but his early albums and his Impressions work is where he really shines.

  • curtis is so amazing, your music is a flow like the air, like the sun.. your music is a litle miracle to god...i'm brazilian and i see how your song is universal..tanks to this job..god bless you... listen too "azimuth" and "toni tornado" "jorge ben"... stay real..

    2pac is not dead...rs

  • THIS SONG IS ART

  • :) simple and felicitous

  • Curtis Mayfield definitely goes on my "Music Mount Rushmore.

  • I love Curtis for all of his string instruments that were being played in his music. You heard everything from drums to piano, to bangles and violins. And he played alot of his own instruments. I love Curtis so much because his music touches my soul, and I grow whenever I hear his music, especially pieces such as this. He reminds me of King David from, The Holy Bible, in the book of Psalms. David spoke the truth too, and so did Curtis. They would have gotten along great!

  • Ich geh auf die Knie wie so oft bei CURTIS MAYFIELD

  • Where has the meaningful music gone?

  • The music is still there, it's just esoteric. Black Power

  • he`s the f--kin MAN

  • This man spoke the truth. One of the greatest musicians ever. This music is just as relevant today as it was back then.

  • Curtis was a poetic, thru his music he sent postive messages to all this is one of my favorites.

  • i am 25 years old , and a die hard underground hip hop fanatic , bus this kind of music is the realist shit i heard in a long time

    big respect from germany

    peace

  • cormega-intro. hip hop thats uses this sample.

  • i am 31 and listen to hiphop since '91.

curtis mayfield, isaac hayes, roy ayers,....

i got much love for this music and this generation!!!

  • so does "Start A New Day" by Spesh K

  • im a white boy but i loved curtis with a passion and i can feel where hes at with this song. what a class act. the early 70's sure were the golden days of black music. when i hear the shit black artists put out now it makes my heart sink. but then, all music, black and white, has gone downhill so far from these days. curtis mayfield - what a man

  • that's awesome, i'm glad you enjoy his music, he spoke of black pride but he wanted to bring black and white together!!!

  • Honestly, its across the board. Think about. Mayfield had contemparies like bob Dylan, Lennon, Neil Young, Carol King, Jim Croce, Marvin Gaye and a few other writers who wrote important lyrics, and powerful music. Greatness within is brought out from the greatness of others. People during that period did music to sound like their own but also be different at the same time. The mentality now is not there.

  • I heard this song when it originally came out, yes im a boomer, a fine one at this, so sad that this feeling is still prevelant today...you tell it curtis!

  • This song is too deep to really analyze and do it justice. My thoughts of the song talks about inner prejudice within black culture and how we should realize regardless of the shade of skin we still fight the same struggles . That may be just me.

  • Wonderful music. Gimme some truth.

  • good to read peoples comments and realise in this day and age a few select heads are just as passionate about real music as myself.....

  • What makes this so emotional that this song STILL applies today. Todays music is where the lyrics accompany the beat but in this the music accompanies the lyrics which makes it eve more dynamic. Curtis Mayfield, a true artist!

  • Justbleazy,

Your comment is are so true.

  • i love the message in his music

"just the surface of a dark deep well"

he made it easier for alot of black folk to love themselves when they were taught not to

  • Amen, son. Peace to the brother who taught us through song how to love one another. :D

  • very nice track ! Curtis is absolut the best soul singer !

  • the lyrics are right on point past and present!!

  • There's is pure love in this song. Where has the love gone? I only hear hatred in the songs today

  • why dont people write their own songs instead of copying him

  • So we can go back to the root. The fruit can be eaten, the root has to be pulled.

  • CUUUUURTIS you 187 me with this song

  • I felt this song. It spoke to my Afrikan roots. Not Afrikan American, African roots.

  • So soulful! RIP Curtis

  • Outstanding...and more meaningful today...sing on in our hearts and minds.

  • much more meaningful today

  • Dayum,Dayum,Dayum Curtis why U do us like this. Tha soul lives fa eva.

  • Monumental man...still sampled by artist nowdays....

  • This a deep, beautiful and plaintive tune -- still on target. Curtis was magisterial -- a visionary musician and poet. Genius prevails.

  • we are darker than bluue

  • this song lyrics still ring true to this day.Curtis wrote all that is happening in America.. He was a great writer and singer. Another lost to the heavens.. Rest in peace, curtis

  • classic

  • yes yes yes this is where its at, yes R.I P. curtis tell it like it is

  • sweet blessings and let us not forget what this soul bought us

  • goddamn kid. This shit is nuts

  • I constantly have to make sure my bucket is completely empty before coming the well of Curtis Mayfield. A Ghetto Psalmist, a visionary who prophesied about what is called "THE NOW"..Thank you Curtis for not just playing your instrument, but for being one..Peace, brother!

  • One of the best comments ever posted on YouTube. Curtis was a prophet....as all great artists are..

  • inI never dreamed when i was playing Curtis' joints in a band, as percussionist, in 1971, that this tune would still be right on target today in 2007. samsara never changes, just fools the I.

  • I like

  • this man is a real poet. Howw!

  • i'm 14 teen tears old and i like oldies a lot better than todays music oldies has a better meanig to it.

  • Unfortunately this song needs to be heard today because much has not changed. It might have gotten worse in out community. Because at least music like this was being made 40years ago and was popular. Nothing is be made like this anymore that is popular.

  • great song!

  • dope!

  • what a pure+beautiful song from a wonderful soul it so let's me remind myself i rather be a black person than any other race.

  • This is the shit!!

  • Love playin this

  • I just got put on to Curtis but But My Fav song is People Get Ready, but I'm really playin this song over and over!!! CLASSIC and I love The Claudine Soundtrack also. RIP CURTISSSSSSSSSSSSSS Mayfield!!!

  • Curtis is just awesome. I love the idealism of the early 70s Soul scene. Curtis, Hayes, Stevie, Marvin, The Dramatics, The Delphonics, The Spinners, The Chi-Lites....The most underrated music around. Curtis was a genius who wasn't a self promoter..just an artist.

  • 37 years after he first recorded this, his message remains so damn true it's crazy. Long live Curtis and soul music!

  • right on

  • Oh man, this song is so real! R.I.P Curtis

  • Perhaps one of the realest songs ever!!! I've been jammin this song for a while and I'm 21 lol.

  • I like how the music changes in the middle and how crazy is that putting a harp solo in there. That's innovative. This is coming from a 21 year old.

  • NOTHING today compares to this music.

  • i love curtis mayfield.. omg.. i have the whole collection.. and yes im only 27.. but i understand his music... R.I.P.

  • It's really really good to read a comment like this from a 27 year old who loves Curtis Mayfield. I am 30 years older and have grooved with him since the 1960's...still listen to him and the Impresssions every day on my IPOD.

  • right on Man... they just dont have music like this no more... im not into the rap scene.. im more of a Record GAl lol// i know.. im a young girl trapped in older more sophisticated body

  • well i am a young man, and i think that all those who did share in his beautiful music, should share it with there children and all youth in general peace love respect, for all men women and children no matter your color or creed

  • I feel sorry for the youths who knows nothing about CM and all of the other soul singers how brought pure, non-water downed, real, uncompromised music. I am glad I am old enough to feel and understand this music. He is a true blessing. Bless.

  • amazing song wow

  • curtis is one of the greatist messangers to people in the music world if you are blessed to have ears that can hearrrrrrrrrrrr

  • i listen to you every day were it not for your words of inspiration i would not be here today xxxx thanks and blessings your truth xxxxxx

  • I am touched by this inspiring song. RIP Curt

  • I wish we had more progressive soul brothers like Curtis Mayfield.

  • A true incomparable Soul music legend! Rest in Peace, brother. Peace be with you eternally.

  • thank you henry rollins for mentioning curtis as a mandatory listen

  • Curtis has SPOKEN....listen! Now we stand in Curtis's Glory..RIP. These words are still true today and it is only through LOVE that we can stop the hatred in this world. Get busy people! I am...join ME! You start in your OWN heart and SOul. Love YOURSELF and Then you have LOVE to give. Burn it outward from your soul!!!!

  • Good Song....

    lyrics optimal...

  • Curtis could just simply sing and play just like the people felt. Those that hear his stories in his lyrics were like in a collective of the same soul. Genius

  • This is how to touch a soul...

  • canot add anything more...just wonderfuel...music did have a message and a proper sound once...anyone remebers? (i'm to young...)

  • R.I.P brother Mayfield...
