  • A friend of mine also wrote to The Blue Nile, and I received two postcards, one from Robert Bell and one from Paul Buchanan, with one wishing me a happy birthday, and the second just wishing me the best.

    They are treasured items.

  • I've watched this interview at least 100 times now. This Scottish-American lass loves the Blue Nile very much!

Thanks so much for the post!

  • A comment was made during this interview about Bono. How does Ireland really feel about Bono? Is he consider a good singer/person?

  • @Thefaze100963 Interesting question. However, I'm a little curious as to why you're asking this question on a post for a Scottish person, from a Scottish band. (I know the interviewer is Irish, but I feel that he's rather inconsequential. I could be wrong.) I say, listen to more Scottish music! ;-D

  • First two albums - genius. The next two - absolute dross.

  • @peapod7820 The overlord has spoken. Don't listen to him folks. A baseless sweeping statement from a nonce

  • Thanks for the post. Paul B is fantastic!

  • lost track and glad that I found out what is cooking...

  • this interviewers brilliant. youd want interviewed by him every week.

  • good to see paul get some recognition .....

  • I'm only just getting into the Blue Nile. Nice Interview. I would say 'Tinseltown in the Rain' is one of the all time greats, very groovy and dancey, yet captivates with the yearning lyrics and vocals. Mad stuff indeed )

  • amazing man and very down to earth and grounded ... considering how incredible he is ! I think these guys are all about the music and therefore don't feel the need to pump out albums ... quality over quantity,

  • Is really a SIR with all the letters

  • @Yoamm A gentleman we all letters

  • For all The Blue Nile fans, their unofficial page is on Facebook, just look for The Blue Nile!

  • class act heard them many years ago.. tricky dicky comon da hoops

  • great interview

  • I remember when "A Walk Across The Rooftops" was released and I have been a fan ever since. "Hats"believe it or not, took me a while to get into..but eventually it grew on me,and is now one of the best albums I have ever heard. The Blue Nile are a very acquired taste, and Buchanans voice is out there for the rest of the world to share, if people will take a few moments of their time to listen.

  • Brilliant interview. Insightful and warm between both parties

  • Wow! So often when you love a band's music, then see an interview with them it destroys the magic. However his quiet modesty only makes me respect the beautiful records he crafts even more.

  • I just adore this band. timeless music, need a humble heart to fully enjoy..

    thanks for the interview video.

good to see many Blue Nile fans here.

  • 5:50 what makes the blue nile the underground legends they are

  • I once got two birthday cards from The Blue Nile back in the 80s, because (I think) a friend had written to them saying what a fan I was. One from Paul, and one from Robert. I still treasure them.

  • @andreasegde

    wow, just wow...

  • a true gentleman

  • Nice job Mark...great interview, must be a fab perk to get to meet someone you admire so much

  • I am from Spain and my English is not very good, can anybody tell me the exact words the tv presenter uses about Bono? thanks

  • he says

    "Bono's Not A Soul Singer"

    apparently :/

  • @ennver3

He says " Bono is not a soul singer". Great band had the pleasure of seeing them 6 times in Dublin over the years

  • @ennver3

The TV presenter says that there are lots of Scottish singers with soulful voices and not many Irish singers like that. Buchannan replies, ''I can't say that...what about Van Morrison and Bono?'' To which the presenter says, '' Ah but, Bono's not a soul singer ''.

Then Buchannan says, '' Yes but he sings with a lot of soul ''

I think this is just dancing on a pin-head to show the difference between what the genre of ''soul singing'' is and what it is to sing any song with ''soul''

  • @ennver3 he said bono sings tru his hole. adios

  • I like the interviewers personal charm. Nice guy. I remember Buchanan years ago standing outside Berkley St Studio in Glasgow with the long trench coat ( grey )and the rain pouring down the steps having a fag with my brother John and me, a nice guy, quiet guy, thin as a wippet and full of the hunger. He looked about nineteen. I wish him well. He reminds me of the ghosts we left behind when we were bhoys...Gerry...TheGmcFilms...

  • I cant descibe how unique and beautiful his voice is.

  • what a nice chap

  • I was first introduced to the Blue Nile in the 1980s by a boyfriend who was a high-end audio salesman. He received "A Walk Across the Rooftops" as a demo disk for Linn audio equipment. As an English major in my senior year at college, I was blown away by the lyrics. I was reading a lot of Ezra Pound and other imagistic poets at the time and was struck by the similarities. All these years later, I am still as moved by their music as I was when I first heard and fell in love with them.

  • I could not agree with you more! I am a lifetime fan and find their music to be the soundtrack for my life.

  • i've never watched Irish tv before... i like the news running across the bottom - - - particularly the story about Bono's trousers.

  • yeah your right Hats superb...

  • Hats may well be one of the best albums ever in my opinion. Beautiful, beautiful music

  • The best band from scotland ever, they move people with their music simply different class, seen them in glasgow last week they are special and unique keep going lads you are a superb band.

  • If you really want your heart broken by Paul Buchanan's mature voice, check out the vid of Aqualung's song Garden of Love. Paul sings the second half and his voice just cracks your heart open like an egg.

  • Thanks for posting this, i have never heard Paul being interviewed before. The interview speaks for its self.excellent cheers

  • I bet he gets a lot

  • just as a matter of interest could you expand on your comment

  • Paul's wonderful songs have kept me company on long journeys and through high's and lows over the years.

  • God Bless Paul Buchanan!!!!

  • Paul Buchanen seems like a really sound guy. Mark Cagney is a dope

  • @spartak95

I thought he did fine...he's obviously a fan...

  • thanks for putting this up.nice to see a decent chat show presenter.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. Paul is indeed one of a kind. Love the soul and spirit of the man and ofcourse the incredible music he, Robert and PJ have made over the last 24 years.

  • I have the pleasure of serving Paul most days in the shop I work in in Glasgow's west end and I can say the man is nothing short of a geniune star, very VERY humble and a true gentleman!!

A guy I've only really got to know in the past year but I've been a fan for years,Tinstle town is still in my top 5 songs of all time so to realy meet him and get on so well is amazing.

    Paul!,your a real star!! :)

  • What a great sense of outlook. Rarely do I see a lyricists write with so much respect when you listen to them it has that true sense of intimacy. I don't mind that it takes 6 years for the band to produce an album, as long as it's good and worthwhile to listen. Truly unforgettable songs. Thanks for posting this interview...

  • Thank you. Most interesting.

  • any info on the new songs/album? thanks

  • Is the song with the lyrics "Bring the house down" a new one? if not what's it from?

  • I don't recognise it either, so I'm not sure where it's from..

  • thanks for posting this video. I very much appreciate.
