A friend of mine also wrote to The Blue Nile, and I received two postcards, one from Robert Bell and one from Paul Buchanan, with one wishing me a happy birthday, and the second just wishing me the best.
@Thefaze100963 Interesting question. However, I'm a little curious as to why you're asking this question on a post for a Scottish person, from a Scottish band. (I know the interviewer is Irish, but I feel that he's rather inconsequential. I could be wrong.) I say, listen to more Scottish music! ;-D
I'm only just getting into the Blue Nile. Nice Interview. I would say 'Tinseltown in the Rain' is one of the all time greats, very groovy and dancey, yet captivates with the yearning lyrics and vocals. Mad stuff indeed )
amazing man and very down to earth and grounded ... considering how incredible he is ! I think these guys are all about the music and therefore don't feel the need to pump out albums ... quality over quantity,
I remember when "A Walk Across The Rooftops" was released and I have been a fan ever since. "Hats"believe it or not, took me a while to get into..but eventually it grew on me,and is now one of the best albums I have ever heard. The Blue Nile are a very acquired taste, and Buchanans voice is out there for the rest of the world to share, if people will take a few moments of their time to listen.
Wow! So often when you love a band's music, then see an interview with them it destroys the magic. However his quiet modesty only makes me respect the beautiful records he crafts even more.
I once got two birthday cards from The Blue Nile back in the 80s, because (I think) a friend had written to them saying what a fan I was. One from Paul, and one from Robert. I still treasure them.
The TV presenter says that there are lots of Scottish singers with soulful voices and not many Irish singers like that. Buchannan replies, ''I can't say that...what about Van Morrison and Bono?'' To which the presenter says, '' Ah but, Bono's not a soul singer ''.
Then Buchannan says, '' Yes but he sings with a lot of soul ''
I think this is just dancing on a pin-head to show the difference between what the genre of ''soul singing'' is and what it is to sing any song with ''soul''
I like the interviewers personal charm. Nice guy. I remember Buchanan years ago standing outside Berkley St Studio in Glasgow with the long trench coat ( grey )and the rain pouring down the steps having a fag with my brother John and me, a nice guy, quiet guy, thin as a wippet and full of the hunger. He looked about nineteen. I wish him well. He reminds me of the ghosts we left behind when we were bhoys...Gerry...TheGmcFilms...
I was first introduced to the Blue Nile in the 1980s by a boyfriend who was a high-end audio salesman. He received "A Walk Across the Rooftops" as a demo disk for Linn audio equipment. As an English major in my senior year at college, I was blown away by the lyrics. I was reading a lot of Ezra Pound and other imagistic poets at the time and was struck by the similarities. All these years later, I am still as moved by their music as I was when I first heard and fell in love with them.
The best band from scotland ever, they move people with their music simply different class, seen them in glasgow last week they are special and unique keep going lads you are a superb band.
If you really want your heart broken by Paul Buchanan's mature voice, check out the vid of Aqualung's song Garden of Love. Paul sings the second half and his voice just cracks your heart open like an egg.
Thanks so much for posting this. Paul is indeed one of a kind. Love the soul and spirit of the man and ofcourse the incredible music he, Robert and PJ have made over the last 24 years.
I have the pleasure of serving Paul most days in the shop I work in in Glasgow's west end and I can say the man is nothing short of a geniune star, very VERY humble and a true gentleman!!
A guy I've only really got to know in the past year but I've been a fan for years,Tinstle town is still in my top 5 songs of all time so to realy meet him and get on so well is amazing.
What a great sense of outlook. Rarely do I see a lyricists write with so much respect when you listen to them it has that true sense of intimacy. I don't mind that it takes 6 years for the band to produce an album, as long as it's good and worthwhile to listen. Truly unforgettable songs. Thanks for posting this interview...
A friend of mine also wrote to The Blue Nile, and I received two postcards, one from Robert Bell and one from Paul Buchanan, with one wishing me a happy birthday, and the second just wishing me the best.
They are treasured items.

A comment was made during this interview about Bono. How does Ireland really feel about Bono? Is he consider a good singer/person?
