@mikerowave1986 Actually, the caliber corresponds to the unit of measurement used to describe the diameter of the barrel. Since the GAU-8 Avenger is measured in millimeters as opposed to inches - such as a .22 rifle - the ammunition is also measured in millimeters. So, while you are correct, it's not .30 caliber (which would be inches), but it is 30mm caliber which is used for a 30mm gun. Does that help?

@D3G3AL3 Well it's slow referred to missiles & other figters, I mean if they fought a modern nation that plane would be semi useless on it's own. But agaist ground targets like normal tanks it's good & more cost efficient than a smart bomb i'd think.
That said the design looks old, during ww2 germans noticed that jets need swept wings because of their speed, brittish jet planes with old school wings kept having accidents. Not sure how in this plane, Computers can stabilize itiquess.
@Kekkon3n Swept wings are needed for transsonic and supersonic flight. The A-10 is not fly-by-wire and is, I'm almost absolutely certain, aerodynamically stable. I mean, look at the P-80.
@Kekkon3n Jets, as a means of propulsion, do not necessitate any special wing configuration, they just move air. As I was saying, the P 80 was a successful jet fighter with straight wings.

@D3G3AL3 That's a pretty low top speed, but what it can do is remain maneuverable at VERY low speeds. Straight wings allow for that. You don't really think about being really slow as a plus:)
When the Air Force was thinking of scrapping the A-10, the Army started barking that THEY'D be more than happy to have them. Of course the Hog has been proven too valuable to scrap. My only criticism is that more of those beauties cannot be built, dammit.

When I was at Ft. Lewis, A-10s used to come over from McCord AFB and sometimes they would fly right over our barracks in a 90-degree turn. They were so low you could see the pilot looking down at us. Really cool! This plane is an Infantryman's favorite, cause they fight right along side us and not like some bomber at 30,000'. Warthogs RULE!!
I was on a training exercise 20 yrs ago set up about 50meters from a riverbank. Smartass A10 driver came up the riverbed just over the water yet below the bankline. Had about 1 1/2 - 2 seconds audible warning before he popped up. Just enough time to hear it and think: whatthehellisthat/where'sitat!/ohSHITohShit!!!!! And in that moment it was in our face in all of it's glory. Would have been a very, very bad day had I been OPFOR. Gotta love Hog drivers. Fly 'em like a very lethal cropduster.

I think the main reason the whole world hates US Citizens is because they believe we're ignorant. For example; we're about to go to war in Iran to protect Israel. Whether or not you support that decision, the rest of world doesn't.

In the 0317 (Marine Snipers) I got to call in an enemy position in the Helmund Province Afghanistan. The position was to far for my 7.62, so when I saw this thing screaming two hundred feet off the ground from my nine o clock, I had no idea what the hell it was. Rather its used as AP round against heavy armor. Plus tungsten gives same if not better penetration, is non radio active pre and post use and is radiation-harmless to crew. Plus tungsten is way more available in the world than uranium, cheaper too. Russians use tungsten based AP with KICKASS success.

When I was at Ft. Lewis, A-10s used to come over from McCord AFB and sometimes they would fly right over our barracks in a 90-degree turn. They were so low you could see the pilot looking down at us. Really cool! This plane is an Infantryman's favorite, cause they fight right along side us and not like some bomber at 30,000'. Warthogs RULE!!

I was on a training exercise 20 yrs ago set up about 50meters from a riverbank. Smartass A10 driver came up the riverbed just over the water yet below the bankline. Had about 1 1/2 - 2 seconds audible warning before he popped up. Just enough time to hear it and think: whatthehellisthat/where'sitat!/ohSHITohShit!!!!! And in that moment it was in our face in all of it's glory. Would have been a very, very bad day had I been OPFOR. Gotta love Hog drivers. Fly 'em like a very lethal cropduster.

Love this plane, but I take issue with his "most relevant aircraft in this war" statement.
Team of AH-64D's providing CCA DIRECT to the ground force is ten times as effective as A-10's.

I think the main reason the whole world hates US Citizens is because they believe we're ignorant. For example; we're about to go to war in Iran to protect Israel. Whether or not you support that decision, the rest of world doesn't.
Another example: Germany. Are they dangerous? No. So why do we still have troops there? By staying there were're sending the message that we don't trust Germans in their own affairs. Japan is another example.

We have a never-ending war against Communism in Korea, we lost the war on Communism in Vietnam, we put Saddam in power in Iraq, and then had to take him out of power, then we started an unwinnable war against terrorism, and next stop is a war against nuclear power in countries we don't trust.
We're on a losing streak. Maybe we should change our game-plan.

Ugly = F117, B2, nearly every Russian airplane
Beautiful = A10, F22, F18, B1, F16, F15, F35, P51
Not necessarily in that order except for the A10. What a great idea that plane was. Build a bad ass machine gun and put wings and a cockpit on it. Can we still say cockpit in these politically correct times? Not bashing the F117 or B2. Regardless of their looks they are certainly lethal and effective.

In the 0317 (Marine Snipers) I got to call in an enemy position in the Helmund Province Afghanistan. The position was to far for my 7.62, so when I saw this thing screaming two hundred feet off the ground from my nine o clock, I had no idea what the hell it was. Then I heard that glorious minigun and watched as the position I spotted disentegrated. It was amazing!

Btw anyone knows why usa and nato still prefers depleted uranium rounds for hard armor penetration rather than tungsten ? uranium round when it explodes , forms uranium oxide which is radio active .. renders the area where these rounds have been hit radioactive .. tungsten gives all the benefits with no side effects.

How would making radio active land which is inhabitable for life for next billions of years to come work ? its like winning over some booty and then ruining it with once own hands. U cant have colonies or workers in such land because the radiation causes birth mutations, radiation sickness and cancers etc. No crops or stuff too.

@somerandomutewb hmm.. ok, i am not sure that it still kills more enemies than normal rounds because killing more enemies isnt exactly the function of du rounds. Rather its used as AP round against heavy armor. Plus tungsten gives same if not better penetration, is non radio active pre and post use and is radiation-harmless to crew. Plus tungsten is way more available in the world than uranium, cheaper too. Russians use tungsten based AP with KICKASS success.
