Yes it is quite interesting to see the amount of hate generated by these two minutes of introduction. Greece has a serious problem with memory and history and truth. Maybe the economic crisis will not only help to reconsider finance, economy, policies, but also history.
@mauriceam hello.i am doing a research about the Jewry in Salonica and the silence of the greek historiography about the Holocaust era related to this city. How could i contact you?
I am sick of finding racist a**holes under every video that I watch. I am not a Jew and not a Greek but I like both people. As for racist idiots, I hope the world will be cleansed of such scum. People hating other people only just because they were born to a different culture and ethnic group - that is sick, indeed the sickest of thing in this world...
Sorry, Thessaloniki has always been Greek and always will be Greek. Just because you lived there or your non-Greek ancestors lived there does not make it your city. This is our city, if you are not Greek, you are just visiting.
@blackstroke1 Therefore, the Jews who had been living there since the sixteenth century were visiting, while the Mikrasiates who were relocated there in the 1920s were the natural "owners" of the city, right? Before the 1920s, Greeks were less than a third of Salonika's population. Read this book, which hhasave been translated into Greek: Salonika, City of Ghosts, by Mark Mazower.
ohhh, please jews turn back to salonica, your poor greek brothers need you. they are covered withy muslim enemies like you have been. please, give yorgos money, he is in a great need.hey american jews, hear me, Turks genocided poor greeks in salonica, go cry for themi, give monet to them. greeks in salonica had been Turks victim like jews in salonica suffered too from same enemy. if you do not believe go, ask it to sarkozy. please jews, give yorgo money, you share same pain in there from past.
@mizas79 Until the 1920s, there were more Jews in Salonika than Greeks. Between then and the Holocaust, Jews ere still at least a third of the total population of the city. Read "Salonica: City of Ghosts" by M. Mazower and "Greece - a Jewish History" by K. Fleming for more information. Και τα δύο έχουν μεταφραστεί στα Ελληνικά.
@andorkez jews keep hiding and acting like victims you always been good at that, and then claiming land and history that never belongs to you! fukin parasites!
@mizas79 I'm not a Jew. Nobody in my family is a Jew. I just read history and you should do the same. I mention books that could teach you something and you insult me. How f*cked up is that? If you're suggesting that what I'm saying has anything to do with Israel claiming the land that should belong to the Palestinians, all I have to say is that you're just paranoid.
@YUSKHAN ahhahah with doctor father and teacher mother i dont think so anyway maybe you confuse greeks with you turks motherfucker you now every year 50.000 turkomongols goes to germany to live
Poia city of silence re skinotheti, pou akoma vouizoun ta autia mas apo ta skoupidiarika, tous taksintzides, tis kórnes, tous mixanovious, tous paliatzides, tis adespotes Kaliópes,gátes, skylous etc..
oraille I am sorry to say that you are naif and ignorant.
I have seen the film and its amazing Its a pity that this clip here gives to people like you the chance to spread their oversimplified and therefore dangerous ideas.
@greggneo Sorry but i'm just angry when someone says me "the turks don't like greeks or the greeks don't like turks" who is from anywhere from the world. in the midle age there were many battles and the battles were done between neighbours. like the battles between england-france, or hungry-romania.. etc when i go anywhere in the world, if i see a greek, i see that we are brothers.
Before the Byzant, in minor asia was the Roman Empire. The Byzant was the east wing from the Roman empire. The romans respected our greek towns and our culture, they didn't change the names. The Turkish folks destroied the ancient greek towns, but the greatest desaster was from the New turks wave with Kemal on 1920. Till 1920 was the Greek presence in Minor asia more as 3000 years in a contineusly civilizated and richly glorious towns, always in contact with "Mother Hellas".(Old Scruptures)
The relation between greek byzants and today greeks is our language, our religion, our traditions. That is what makes the diference.
Our continuesly history was never interupted in minor Asia until the Kemal wave the villages and towns, which was from our grandfathers established, total destroied.
The Constantinopel was attacked from the Crusaders but was not destroied, after that the latins was in the cityside Galata which they built their trade center. You don't know our history, don't try now.
@0Anakontas0 When you talk about Kemal who is father of Turks, you should know how the greeks killed and massacred the Turkish villages in west anatolia. And you should also know Kemal is from SELANIK which was Turkish-Juif city. You should also know how poor Turkish villagers won you in that battle while you were having the best british weapons of the time! Turks won you with pickaxes. Turks died for the soil. So they deserve it already.
@ oraille. Because you are self confuesed you don't know what you wrote. You can Googling or Wikiing and then you kann speak about Greek history. You can see when was Byzant established, when the turks came from midlle Asia, the newgreek Alfabet and you will see that the words- which are on the ancient marbels in Turkey- all the newgreeks can read, no Vardaskians or Turks use those words. Also, you know, i was till my 25 years in Greece and i live in Germany now, not in USA.
Yes in antalya i remember a tablet which is 1000 years old. people are reading it but only the ones who can read greek alphabet can understand that it is turkish. what does turkish mean? it doesn't represent a nation. it is like french or american. there is no turkish race. this name was given by romans to the people who are living in anatolia. in anatolia there were maybe 50 nations. today all are called turkish., like italians, french.. ect
personaly i don't care about eu. when i ve seen the situation in eastern europe, in greece i prefer turkey to stay out from eu. eu is beeing done for the big companies. during in eu road, in turkey most of small the shops have been replaced by big world marks. i dislike it.
Greece was under ottoman, no one asked Greeks if they whanted all those foreigners, slavs, jews..People came and went, easily..That´s way usa helping skopia..They want a seperate Makedonia for the jews..U r considering Thessaloniki yours..No european country accepted jews but the C A P T I N E poor Greece without Greeks willing..
Hello Anakonda, i'm not agaist your comments, i just hate the ones who critise this issue with racist mind. If todays anatolian were all from mongolia, we would have the same eyes and out look with them. Turks and Greeks are mixed in the time.
I think you don't know your exact History. The Turks came from east - middle Asia. You came from Sanskria (heute Nepal) and west Himalaya. Your grand-grand fathers are with those eyes, only when you came to the West and minor Asia you were mixed with the People of Byzant which was all the east Mediteran see. So you became Knowledge, Kultur and round eyes. All these are not racism it's only the truth.
Which byzant? Before turkish movement, before byzant, there were pers, before it there were macedonians? However byzant was the mixture of these nations, todays turkey is also the same. Turkish history in anatolia is older than all american history. Your are not follow of byzant. You even don't speak the same language in greece. Half of the greece today is macedonian and turkish.
Typicaly complex of not to have a national identity... Look idiot. I don't call you greek which you proud of... and which means thief in latin language. I call you yunan which is coming from a great city kingdom iyonia 2000 years ago in agean region. But probebly the real byzans or iyonians have been disappeared. In greece, you don't repsesent these old civilisations. Most of you are slav, turkish or macadonian...
Selanik is the name of Salonika for 7hundred years. Izmir means Symirna. It has no relation with arabic language. Symirna became ismyrna by the local habitants than transformed to Izmir today.
Look stupid, i'm not asian, i'm anatolian. With your mantality you have to fire all americans from their land. The land belongs to whom give his blood for it. Anyway i'm happy to teach you the real name of selanik and izmir
I think your brain has been already washed. Stop being racist and respect each other. We r talking about a beautiful city. It is not important what name do you call there. I'm a son of a great impire. If there is some one who has to proud of his ancestor, he is not you of course. You have a complex of being a small country that not have been existed neither in the past nor in the future. Selanik was the business capital during the ottoman.. Not a bad known lost city as today
Thesalonikis population was hacked and survivers lost everything when ottomans invaded. Years after otomans wanted the business to rise and did not want greeks incharge of comerce so theywelcomed thousands of jews from Europe to take over. These jews had more rights than the greeks unde turk laws and took full advantage. Sudenly thesalonika was LIBERATED. Reprisals and revenge for unjust treatment from jews to greeks under turkish blanket of favouritism for many years did happen.
Thessaloniki is MACEDONIAN word, not Greek! The city name became from 2 MACEDONIAN words: "THESSAL" - that means someone from Thessalia, and "NIK" - that means rule with something, like MACEDONIAN words: rabot"NIK" - a man who rules with the work; voj"NIK" - a man who rules with the wars. Manu time latter the city name was changed in SALONIKA, and from that Salonika the MACEDONIANS change in SOLUN! And when Greece took from us in a Balkan war 1913, the Greeks renamed city again in Thessaloniki!
The true about SOLUN(Thessaloniki) is that the city was built in 315 B.C. from MACEDONIAN king KASANDER, and the name became from his women Thessalonika. Years latter the city was changed in SALONIKA, and from that SALONIKA, the MACEDONIANS change the city name in SOLUN! Thessaloniki is MACEDONIAN name, not Greek! Macedonians change from Thessaloniki in SOLUN and when you Greeks took from us in 1913, you renamed again in Thessaloniki! But we will get back and Thessaloniki will be SOLUN again!
Why do people who come and occupy a land without being invited or being welcomed, resent the displaced locals for forgetting them after they are gone?
I was borne and raised in Thessaloniki, and a great man i once knew had your name maurice. I feel quite sad by the situation that my city is now. Where could I find your documentary?
You are right, Intruder303, we should stay out of Salonika, you jealous, insecure Greeks can't stand it when anyone else does well, especially in your own country.
Avraam Benaroya was a (Jewish) Salonican socialist and syndicalist who played a fundamental role in organizing the labour movement in Greece during the 20th century. What's more he did that against ethnic divisions (he was an anti-zionist). I wonder if this documentary is equally balanced in its claim to restore history?
Yes, there is a long tribute to Avraham Benaroya about whom the town is so silent.
As an irony of life, Benaroya was forced to leave for Israël where he died. As you know the decision to create a "national" political Jewish entity was taken with a majority of one vote only. Unfortunately the necessity to have such entity can maybe find its justification in the constant refusal by the red cross to intervene for the deported Jews because they could only deal with requests made by member states.
benaroya was marginalised not for being jewish, but for being socialist as opposed to left liberal and anti-bolshevik at the same time. he was just as much marginalised in israel, where he died in poverty. mazower's book is a masterpiece - hope the film does justice to it but somehow i doubt. salonika was admnstered by the germans who oversaw drctly the dprtation of the jews - ever heard of mertens or kurt waldheim? the athens community which was small and not living in one neighborhood srvived.
Yes thta's what the film says. Of course Max Merten is cited in the film. If you live in Greece you can buy the dVd in Athens at the Kaufmann bookstore and in Salonika at Barby oulakis on Platia Aristotelou. Mazower's book is quite good although he could express himself more clearly on some subjects on which he is very cautious. As you can see on some comments his book is considred as "hebrew propaganda" by some. Greece has a huge problem in coping with truth.
as the eglish joke goes ... "it was the wrong king of greeks". mind you - if you know anything abouth post-civil war greece, it was only after 1975 that a new generation of historiographers started working on social history or thorny issues. moreover, with the exception of the work done by the jewish museum in athens, i don't think there are any archives left in greece. also, the survivors, with typical greek mentality, for years kept silent "to spare their kids the pain". it is changing now
Salonika is a beautiful city, but last time I was there, all I heard was "Havra Juedon", and the anti-Semitic comments that started on the airplane and continued all through the mainlaind and the islands made me relieved to return to Israel and never go back.
"havra ioudaion": "tower of babel, meeting where all speak together, making discussion impossible". supposedly in synagogues each recited his own prayer, on the top of his voice. not a clue if individual prayer was customary in greek shepharade communities, but prayers must have looked quite different from a priest-led mass. probably did carry derogatory associations about jews, in the past, but no longer does, even if it sounds insensitive. you read into it more than it can bear
OK, fair enough, but "havra ioudaion" was the least of what I heard when I was in Greece. Maybe things are changing for the better, because Greece really is a beautiful country, In all honesty, I haven't been there since 1993, but at that time, my visit was somewhat ruined by what I heard.
Take your path!!!That was the idea of your Zionists,to TAKE Thessaloniki, and make your new JERUSALEM!!!IT DID NOT WORK OUT!!!NOW YOU HAVE AN OTHER PLAN!!!YOUR OWN SOROS,USES THE poor SLAVS,TO THINK THEY ARE MACEDONIANS,and they try to steal our identity, and our LAND!!!THIS IS A ZIONISTIC PLAN!!!TO CONTROL MACEDONIA,and pout your tale inside again!!!...MOLON LAVE!!!!
Thessaloniki is not the home of the Jews!!!It's a GREEK LAND!!!THE HOME OF THE JEWS,IS ISRAEL!!!You were visitors to the Greek land!!!!Do not dream for something was never yours!!!
redoctober, whoever you are, you're right. There were thousands of Jews in Salonika before WW2. The Germans murdered them, not the greeks. Look at Yad Vashem - Greeks were among the most pro-Jewish peoples during WW2, saved hundreds of Jews while the Germans were killing them in mass. This film doesnt do justice to this fact.
Prosexe ta logia you because whatever you and everybody else says here is representative of Greece. I just don't want your antisemitic slurs to reflect bad on other Greeks. If you really cared about Greece you should consider ti edimposi dineis jia ti xora sou.
Yes unfortunately the cosmopolitanism of many of the Balkan cities has disappeared...as has that of Istanbul which is 99.9% Turkish now. Population exchanges and migrations have created stability - not instability - with the exception of Kosovo. Unfortunately Cosmopolitanism has been the heavy price paid. As far as the Greek Jews, they were exterminated by the Nazis, not driven out by the Greeks. Let's not forget that. I will try to make it to Thes to meet you.
I will be in Thessaloniki end of may until first week of june. I will leave some subtitles versions at Molho book store.
There will be an important conference on holocaust in Thessaloniki from june 5 till 8. Maybe you will find time to attend. I hope my film will be screened there as side event... but I doubt that this could be possible. Reading some comments (and I did erase the most extremist) you can understand that there is a latent violence.
maurice, can you keep us posted on happenings/discussions at the holocaust festival in Thessaloniki? or just post their website here so we can check it? Will they publish any articles/show other documentaries?
Sorry to have been so late replying. The Salonika Holocaust seminar was quite interesting bringing together confirmed historians like Browning and Bartov and young Greek historians. These last two ones were flabergasted to hear that this was the first seminar on the subject. I think that they are planning to publish what was said. Of course Holocaust in Greece was the most controversial part of the seminar.
Yes...the Greeks destroyed the minarets...just as the Turks destroyed many churches in Turkey. Even the Greeks destroyed many churches in Greece to build new churches. This has nothing to do with Orthodox Greek cohabitation with Jewish Greek. The Greek Jews were exterminated by the Nazis, not the Greek Orthodox. Perhaps your film isn't good enough for the festival (I don't know, I haven't seen it - if its propaganda full of untruths, maybe that's why it hasn't been given the attention)
This film is indeed a critic of nationalism that bring people to destroy churches and places of cult. Of course this film does not say that Greeks exterminate Jews. It is NOT about that. It is about how history has been taught to you. So if you consider that the 500 years of cosmopolite presence in Thessaloniki is weel represented in your history books and in the town then we disagree. The big problem is that there is a return of ethicism and especially in the Balkan.
are you suggesting that the Greeks burned down the synagogues? That's rediculous. The Greek Jews and the Orthodox Jews lived side by side until the Nazis invaded and then the Orthodox Greeks did all they could to save the Greek Jews. I should know, my grandmother lived through it all and told me stories.
Of course no. But they did bring down the minarets with the exception of the remains of the last one at the Rotonde. This film is about the ways history is told and indeed the jewish part has been silenced. It is today impossible to screen my film in a cinema in Thessaloniki and the doc festival has been constantly ignoring it avoiding any possible discussion.
All the comments &the video present some truths, However they are selective memories &history. It is well known that Thessaloniki was &still is a city of immigrants as a big port & trading post. Dot ever forget though that Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC, and the name of the city is taken after King Cassander's wife, Thessalonica, sister of Alexander the Great. So all Jews-Slavs-Turks who promote their passing from this ancient city remember that you're only part of this town's history...
This film is about the official silence of the town and the state about 500 years of history. It is of course not a nationalistic claim, just the opposite. The way history is told benefits politics stances that justify etnicity and extreme nationalism.
The predominant races for the largest period of this town's existence were Macedonians {Greeks}-Romans-Byzantines{Greeks}. Thessaloniki was & still is a buzzing town & not a city of silence nor a Jewish city. You should be grateful that this city accomodated you & your families for centuries and always remember its greatest past which was surely not during the Ottoman rule or the Jewish outpost and certainly not nowadays...
Greeks have came in Thessaloniki (Solun) in 1913 after they did assimilation of the Macedonian population living there. Before that there were lots of people but the majority was Macedonian.
There is NO Greek word called "solun" there is only Solon & he was Greek lowgiver, he is one of them, that you owe your existence in that world, otherwise you must were slaves.
So Thessaloniki is the only name for my town.
What was & what is Makedonians ? ? ? Don't tell me, let me guess . . . . Slavs ? ? ? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA . . . you're ridiculous.
Why are you here? you must go to bet&win, there maybe you have somethink to get, here no chance.
The fact the Jews who survived lost their fortunes its not sth happened only to them.During that time people did not even have to eat.Greece was still in a civil war untill 1949.You thing they'd care about a small minority? It could happened in any country by that time. You're making a point that greeks are antisimitic but i don't think its true.We cannot judge what happened before 70 years with todays terms.Greece, bulgaria, serbia, turkey by that time needed to survive, not to protect civil rights.
Salonika is a 2500 years old city. During all these years the only "race" that was continiusly leaving in the city were Greeks. Why is the city refered as Jews city if the Jews lived in it only for 500 years.and even in 1910's the city was populated by 1/3 Jews, 1/3 Greeks and 1/3 of many other nations. With your thinking,Greeks can claim that istanbul or Izmir are greek cities.
it was not greeks fault that the germans killed the jews community.Greeks and Jews had good relations untill the WWII
I am a BUlgarian. I live in Bulgaria but I am very close to the bulgarian-greek border. Thessaloniki is about 80 km far away from my city. so I have been in Thessaloniki. It is my favourite city... I love it so much! I love the great old churches-Saint Dimitrios and its cript, Saint Georgeos, Saint Sofia, the archeological excavations, the Arch, lefkos pirgos, the old medieval fortress, thessaloniki's mediterranean bazar, the street along the sea with the caffes and so on....
Here in Thessaloniki we have an ancient saying wich is truth about 2.500 years :"No one is more diseagreable than one who gets the benefaction." "Ουδείς αχαριστότερος του ευεργετιθέντως"
You seem to consider that the Jewish presence was neglectable but you still say that 1/3 of the historic town belongs to them. You don't seem to be interested by what happen to a large part of their properties confiscated during WWII and administrated by collaborators who established by spoliation their actaul wealth. The real proble, and this explain the title of the film, is the silence that so conviently covered 500 years of history and some large looting.
And what about the propaganda of Mark Mazower ? ?ha ha, what a best seller ! !
Thessaloniki's detailed history for the good poor Jews & some others, must be the title.
Why he stops in that point of history, can you imagine? ?
Why after your expulsion from Spain you came in to Thessaloniki & the Ottomans gave you the best parts of the town, as refugees ?? with the consent of the big powers of the era(Brits,French,Austrians) & till now Jews, possessing the 1/3 of down town ? ?
Why Mazower and myself would be engaged in some propagnda efforts. nothing is at stake for us. This film and his book are not to be considered through nationalistic lenses. You should ask yourself if you are not manipulated by myths and lyes that found nationalism and surely bring people to war.
Very nice to see the parts of our dearest old town, in that litlle film, but RESPECT, i'm sure that you are geting red, of that things that you're saying.
...did u ever considered that from 1430 the turkish goverments were trying to minimise the greek population in order to avoid any revolutionary movement(logical)?what about jews? why turks did not touched them?and why the jewish community of thessaloniki was against the libaration in 1912?
pcjust for the record i am not patriot, racist etc
my friend before you bomb the White Tower, you have to study better the history of thessaloniki. i don't have to defend the greek Resistance against the Nazis, just open any book about it. But sth that is not very known is that in 1943( i am not so sure about the year)the rabbi with his speaches in the synagogue called the Jews to get on the trains and of course those pour people did what he tell them.and sth else...
"after the Asia Minor catastrophy part of an ethnic clasing"
No, unless you mean an ethnic cleansing by the international community. The exchange was developed by the international community. a Scandavian won the Nobel prize for it!
My grandparents were Romiote and Safardim from Salonica and your film really generalizes, omits facts, and results in much prejudice against Greeks as one might find in characteristic of antisemitism.
No it not because the international community helps to solve problems that they are responsible of them.
This ethnic cleansing was a win win deal for Venizelos and his Turkish counterpart. It helped to hhelenise Macedonia and it changes the repartition of population in Salonika, now deserted by the Muslims. From a Jewish town it bacame a Greek one
The total ethnic cleaning of the Jews by Bulgarians troops in Bulgarian annexed Thrace was the most total ethnic cleansing Holocaust of Jews in all of the Balkans. It is given near total silence in Israel.
The issue of the Holocaust in Greece has been utterly perverted in Israel. I am a Romaniote!
I think there is a lot of confusion. Of course the bulgarians were allied to Germany but this fascist regime refused to hand over its natinional Jews (although treating them as you can imagine). Maybe this is the reason of what you say. Of course in Greece they considered them as Greek and behave with brutality. This raise the question of protection of passport. In Belgium, they first refused to deport the 4000 Belgian Jews, accepting to deport de foreign ones, until they gace up.
please say more, how is the issue of the holocaust in Thrace perverted? i dont understand. it was the Bulgarians that transported all Thracian jews to Treblinka, not the greeks
This film is not about Thrace and Bulgarians. it is about Salonika and how the towerased the jewish and Ottoman past of its history. Nobody says that the Greek deported the Jews but yes in Salonika a large part of them took and still take advantage of the deportation. And worse of all there is no will to at least say the truth and research on bystander, civil servants, police etc responsabilities.
For centuries a Jewish minority indeed lived in the city (many of whom were Greek jews as well) ,unfortunately they were wiped out after the German invasion. Ironically, no mention of the Greek attempts to save the Jews is mentioned. Furthermore, claiming Thessaloniki (founded in 315 BCE) as a soley "Jewish town for centuries" promotes a purposely misguided falsehood for the sake of your own dark aspirations.
And this much is saddening, especially considering your own claims of non-partisanship
The bese of your mistake is the consideration of Greece as a state, a nation like it is understood today in the continuity of history. What this film says is that from end of XVth century to beginning of XX this town was an important Jewish center with indeed a majority of Jews and a minority (you like it or not) of Christian Greeks. This aspect is completely wiped out in what of the town shows of its history.
Would you want those select few homes returned to their ancestral decendants ? Im not sure what your ideal resolution would be, because then what happens to the millons of Greeks who lost their homes in the greater Balkans and Asia Minor ?
The idea of a homeland for the Jews has been realized, and it is called Israel. Get over your anti-Hellenic sentiment, because it wasnt the Greeks who erased your presence (it was they who accepted you to begin with)
What is made in all former occupied countries (like France and Belgium) is a full research on the looting and collaboration which brings historical light on what happened. The least we can say is that there seems to be no will to make this work in Greece. very frankly I cann't understand your nationalism. For me Israêl is not an "homeland". Why should we have one? Europe has suppressed the need for IDs, and saved our generation from wars that killed so many of our parents.
Sephardic people don't have any anti hellenic feeling, but the history can not be silenced. the language of salonika was not greek before 1912. Ladino or jewish spanish was predominant in Salonika, 2/3 of the total population of salonika were jewish. Salonika was the biggest jewish town around the world. For this reason some writers called Salonica "Mother of Israel"
Yes, but (the Greek government) encouraged them to move out for jobs and a better future, which was a future in hell of course, and there was a known group back then, the E.E.E., or something like that, which cooperated with a local news paper for propaganda against Jewish, before the burnings, the reason probably was cause Jews had success with their local business, and that considered as an threat by the Greeks.
I had a Jewish friend whose family escaped from the Greek butchers of Selonika and he told me horrible memories. Her family was beheaded in their garden by Greeks and their house were raided. "All Jews and Muslims feared and escaped" she said.
is there any paper written about this subject by scholars? I mean serious, neutral and scientific papers based on solid proofs. I am really curious about the subject as a person whose ancestors are victims of ethnic violence and terrorism.
Yes it is quite interesting to see the amount of hate generated by these two minutes of introduction. Greece has a serious problem with memory and history and truth. Maybe the economic crisis will not only help to reconsider finance, economy, policies, but also history.

Hmmm..I read only several comments, and got the picture of the comments in general:-)
Nope..Thessaloniki has never been the city of silence.
Then..Yes..Jews did live in this city, still do.Yes..they were murdered in the Nazi camps.
Yes..Some Greeks did help some Jews to escape deaths.
BUT ..when some survivors came back ,SOME greeks felt very unpleasant.Saying..why didn't you ALL die in the camps ?!
Thanks for the video !

0Anakontas0 2 years ago 2
@0Anakontas0 When you talk about Kemal who is father of Turks, you should know how the greeks killed and massacred the Turkish villages in west anatolia. And you should also know Kemal is from SELANIK which was Turkish-Juif city. You should also know how poor Turkish villagers won you in that battle while you were having the best british weapons of the time! Turks won you with pickaxes. Turks died for the soil. So they deserve it already.
oraille 2 years ago
0Anakontas0 2 years ago
Yes in antalya i remember a tablet which is 1000 years old. people are reading it but only the ones who can read greek alphabet can understand that it is turkish. what does turkish mean? it doesn't represent a nation. it is like french or american. there is no turkish race. this name was given by romans to the people who are living in anatolia. in anatolia there were maybe 50 nations. today all are called turkish., like italians, french.. ect

Oraille your comments are rubish.
When the Turks took the greek towns names and transfer them in their language was a History robbery.
1) Istabul= Eis tin Poli (in Greek: To the Town)
2) Thessaloniki= Selanik
3) Andrianoupolis= Edirne
4) Izmir= Smirni
etc
You think that we greeks accept anyone who tries to rob again our language and history?
0Anakontas0 2 years ago
Hello Anakonda, i'm not agaist your comments, i just hate the ones who critise this issue with racist mind. If todays anatolian were all from mongolia, we would have the same eyes and out look with them. Turks and Greeks are mixed in the time.
oraille 2 years ago
I think you don't know your exact History. The Turks came from east - middle Asia. You came from Sanskria (heute Nepal) and west Himalaya. Your grand-grand fathers are with those eyes, only when you came to the West and minor Asia you were mixed with the People of Byzant which was all the east Mediteran see. So you became Knowledge, Kultur and round eyes. All these are not racism it's only the truth.
0Anakontas0 2 years ago
Which byzant? Before turkish movement, before byzant, there were pers, before it there were macedonians? However byzant was the mixture of these nations, todays turkey is also the same. Turkish history in anatolia is older than all american history. Your are not follow of byzant. You even don't speak the same language in greece. Half of the greece today is macedonian and turkish.

ARXOS80 3 years ago
Yes, there is a long tribute to Avraham Benaroya about whom the town is so silent.
As an irony of life, Benaroya was forced to leave for Israël where he died. As you know the decision to create a "national" political Jewish entity was taken with a majority of one vote only. Unfortunately the necessity to have such entity can maybe find its justification in the constant refusal by the red cross to intervene for the deported Jews because they could only deal with requests made by member states.
mauriceam 3 years ago
benaroya was marginalised not for being jewish, but for being socialist as opposed to left liberal and anti-bolshevik at the same time. he was just as much marginalised in israel, where he died in poverty. mazower's book is a masterpiece - hope the film does justice to it but somehow i doubt. salonika was admnstered by the germans who oversaw drctly the dprtation of the jews - ever heard of mertens or kurt waldheim? the athens community which was small and not living in one neighborhood srvived.
salukidog1 3 years ago
Yes thta's what the film says. Of course Max Merten is cited in the film. If you live in Greece you can buy the dVd in Athens at the Kaufmann bookstore and in Salonika at Barby oulakis on Platia Aristotelou. Mazower's book is quite good although he could express himself more clearly on some subjects on which he is very cautious. As you can see on some comments his book is considred as "hebrew propaganda" by some. Greece has a huge problem in coping with truth.
mauriceam 3 years ago
as the eglish joke goes ...

Salonika is a beautiful city, but last time I was there, all I heard was "Havra Juedon", and the anti-Semitic comments that started on the airplane and continued all through the mainlaind and the islands made me relieved to return to Israel and never go back.
shellibai 3 years ago
"havra ioudaion": "tower of babel, meeting where all speak together, making discussion impossible". supposedly in synagogues each recited his own prayer, on the top of his voice. not a clue if individual prayer was customary in greek shepharade communities, but prayers must have looked quite different from a priest-led mass. probably did carry derogatory associations about jews, in the past, but no longer does, even if it sounds insensitive. you read into it more than it can bear
salukidog1 3 years ago
OK, fair enough, but "havra ioudaion" was the least of what I heard when I was in Greece. Maybe things are changing for the better, because Greece really is a beautiful country, In all honesty, I haven't been there since 1993, but at that time, my visit was somewhat ruined by what I heard.

redoctober, whoever you are, you're right.

I have great sympathy for Jews and their rough history but to claim that Thessaloniki was a Jewish town is far stretched.
Jews were guests because the Turks were occupiers at the time.
Anyhow, in this day and age anyone can claim anything and ignorant people believe it.
Thessaloniki started as a Greek Town and was named after Alexander's sister and was built on another Greek Town named Thermi.
In its long history it remained mainly Greek with other ethnic groups mixed in. A true cosmopolitan.

Reading some comments (and I did erase the most extremist) you can understand that there is a latent violence.
mauriceam 3 years ago
maurice, can you keep us posted on happenings/discussions at the holocaust festival in Thessaloniki? or just post their website here so we can check it? Will they publish any articles/show other documentaries?
laurakp2 3 years ago

Perhaps your film isn't good enough for the festival (I don't know, I haven't seen it - if its propaganda full of untruths, maybe that's why it hasn't been given the attention)
jjgreek1 3 years ago 3
This film is indeed a critic of nationalism that bring people to destroy churches and places of cult. Of course this film does not say that Greeks exterminate Jews. It is NOT about that. It is about how history has been taught to you. So if you consider that the 500 years of cosmopolite presence in Thessaloniki is weel represented in your history books and in the town then we disagree. The big problem is that there is a return of ethicism and especially in the Balkan.
mauriceam 3 years ago
are you suggesting that the Greeks burned down the synagogues? That's rediculous. The Greek Jews and the Orthodox Jews lived side by side until the Nazis invaded and then the Orthodox Greeks did all they could to save the Greek Jews. I should know, my grandmother lived through it all and told me stories.
jjgreek1 3 years ago 6

So all Jews-Slavs-Turks who promote their passing from this ancient city remember that you're only part of this town's history...
kostakosta28 3 years ago
This film is about the official silence of the town and the state about 500 years of history. It is of course not a nationalistic claim, just the opposite. The way history is told benefits politics stances that justify etnicity and extreme nationalism.
mauriceam 3 years ago
The predominant races for the largest period of this town's existence were Macedonians {Greeks}-Romans-Byzantines{Greeks}. Thessaloniki was & still is a buzzing town & not a city of silence nor a Jewish city. You should be grateful that this city accomodated you & your families for centuries and always remember its greatest past which was surely not during the Ottoman rule or the Jewish outpost and certainly not nowadays...

Yes, you're right.
However, in 1910 the town had 120,000 inhabitatans. 60,000 was Jewish.
It's a fact that the town was populated by Greeks mainly due to the advent of the Greek refugees in 1923.
Turks were more, as the rulers of the town. In the countryside demographics were different. south was Greek; north was Slavic.
In the Byzantine times, before Ottoman invasion, the city had been having a majority of Greeks since its foundation.

You should ask yourself if you are not manipulated by myths and lyes that found nationalism and surely bring people to war.

my friend before you bomb the White Tower, you have to study better the history of thessaloniki. i don't have to defend the greek Resistance against the Nazis, just open any book about it.

My grandparents were Romiote and Safardim from Salonica and your film really generalizes, omits facts, and results in much prejudice against Greeks as one might find in characteristic of antisemitism.
aero1aero1 4 years ago 2

I am a Romaniote!
aero1aero1 4 years ago 2
I don'r see what you are trying to explain, what you are defending.
My grand father, Dr Matalon in Salonika, was a romaniote too, but what is the point? The ones of Janina also.
mauriceam 4 years ago
My point is that in Israel the perpetrators of the holocaust in Thrace were honored by Yad Vashem. Every Greek Jew knows this injustice.
As far as collaborators, yes there were like Rabbi Koretz...

Anyway, thank you for your participation on the subject. I hope one of these days you will have the opportunity to view the film.

please say more, how is the issue of the holocaust in Thrace perverted? i dont understand. it was the Bulgarians that transported all Thracian jews to Treblinka, not the greeks
rbenroubi 3 years ago 4

And this much is saddening, especially considering your own claims of non-partisanship
alexandros1821 3 years ago 5

Get over your anti-Hellenic sentiment, because it wasnt the Greeks who erased your presence (it was they who accepted you to begin with)
No wonder you havnt been taken seriously.
alexandros1821 3 years ago 3
What is made in all former occupied countries (like France and Belgium) is a full research on the looting and collaboration which brings historical light on what happened. The least we can say is that there seems to be no will to make this work in Greece. very frankly I cann't understand your nationalism. For me Israêl is not an "homeland". Why should we have one? Europe has suppressed the need for IDs, and saved our generation from wars that killed so many of our parents.

It is almost time to come to an end with this XIXth century concept that divided people.

*Nobody says that the Greek deported the Jews*

Greeks are now claim that they are civilized.

No, I will rather place short pieces of rushes that I didn't use and that are interesting.
I am selling my film on DVD at 30 € shipment cost included.

is there any paper written about this subject by scholars? I mean serious, neutral and scientific papers based on solid proofs. I am really curious about the subject as a person whose ancestors are victims of ethnic violence and terrorism.
