......I am desperate, could you please tell me what were the ingredients in this perfume, that I can ask or look for the same ingredients. I want to have a perfume, I deserve one ;0((((
Hi, 2 things. One I visited ur fume finder.com, and when it's a great idea to have put things like that together, I will go check it out a lot I think, I Am a little disappointed because the choice is not that great. It only limits to a dozen of perfume for each category ;-((( It deserves way more. And 2nd, I used to wear GLORIA from CACHAREL, and as you might know, they don't make it anymore for a couple of years now if not more, and since then, I CAN'T find anything I like/LOVE. I am despe
but the original shalimar they sell now is not exactly like the old shalimar in the old bottle, i do think it smells different.,just like chanel no.5 it doesn't smell as it was...too bad !!
Shalimar reminds me of a damp basement in a nursing home.Sorry. Hate it! I do fully understand that fragrance is 100% personal. I love so many fragrances. I have over 100. This one, however, would never grace my vanity.
@PawelLopatka This is an old video that was part of an Internet meme circulating at the time - a slice of YouTube culture. I can see why you're bemused if you're just stumbling on it now, out of context.
Katie, Shalimar used to be my signature scent, but I wanted a change and was steered toward For Her by Narciso Rodriguez which I absolutely LOVE. What are your thoughts on For Her???
@vvaningen I adore For Her, especially in the EdP concentration. I discuss it in both of my Winter Fragrance Gift vids, and there's a separate video review of the EdT.
@MikeNY911 You're right - L'Heure Bleue & Mitzy are due a look and a sniff. Those are "advanced placement classics" that I've not felt clever enough to tackle. But I may anyway...
Thank you for your answer. What would you reccomend, for spring/early summer, for my wife this season (she likes flowery scents, for those seasons)? Something to impress her, and say wow.. ? :)
Katie, I know it's an old world fume, but have you ever tried Bal a Versailles? Michael Jackson used to douse himself in that one. It's somewhat ambery and floral. Just curious if you had ever sampled it? It's experiencing a surge of renewed interest--likely due to Michael.
@50Violetta I wear Bal à Versailles. It would be an interesting phenomenon if it was being sought out because MJ loved it, since BaV is the kind of classic 1960s vintage perfume that younger sniffers aren't usually comfortable wearing.
It smells like you're standing in a barn with the doors open to the fields of flowers right outside: floral with definite undercurrent of leather/hay/sweaty animal smells. It's deep and sophisticated. Go Michael!
@KatiePuckrikSmells I Bal de Versailles also, to replace L'heure Bleu. I connected it with a Cashmere sweater of black and tan horizontal stripes, short sleeves, that I wore with a Black scarf. So I could never wear it except with wool. Consequently I have perfume and an eau de toilette that are over 30 years old. Shalimar I accidentally swallowed and had my stomach pumped in Charleston, SC. Bad memories. I just keep my mouth shut whenever I am around it and excuse myself. Is this PTSD?
lol! i stumbled upon you and you are cracking me up. I've spritzed shalimar and can see that she is a beautiful lady but for now she's someone else's beautiful lady. She's not quite my style at the moment. perhaps I'll "grow" into her.
@xandria20 I've been reading all your comments, and you're cracking me up, too! I know just what you mean about admiring a perfume, appreciating why it's a classic, but not having that visceral connection to it.
@valine0 The newer Eau Premiere version of No. 5 is sheerer and lighter than the original No. 5 formulation. If your mom doesn't like strong smells, she'd be happier with Eau Premiere.
holy moly, this was definitely too strong for me. i found it to be super powdery and...old womanly. i hate to say that, because shalimar is a "classic" and "inspirational," but i would never wear it myself.
@akmarvell We all definitely have "perfume personalities", determined by the smells we adore wearing cuz they make us feel more ourselves, and the stuff we'd never wear, cuz it's so "un-us" that it would be almost like dressing in drag.
@KatiePuckrikSmells I agree with you! There are a lot of fragrances that I would never wear that I like on other people because it makes them sort of distinctive and unique.
you would like flowerbomb by viktor and rolf...i think i spelled that right? its the perfect mix of sofistication and floraly fruit without being overpowering! at least i love it! <3
I can appreciate her respect for a perfume that has seen two world wars. It's good. But to me, "classic perfumes" or "narcotic florals" are code for "stinks" or "smells like your grandmother." It's the modern nose. We're used to things much lighter, cleaner and yes, sweeter. It's off putting for most people. Shalimar is a survivor, like my grandmother -- due great respect, but I don't want to smell like her.
@BirdsMom2009 I have, but I can never remember what it smells like, because I always think, "Oh, I don't like that one," and then I put it down and forget about it. But I did see a shopper going koo-koo for it at the Creed counter at Neiman Marcus the other day....
@KatiePuckrikSmells please please do the vetiver ,and the mouchoir de monsieur...your gorgeous sense of wonder nourishes the interest and i'm so curious to hear what you'd say......yes i love the guerlains. i sprayed some mouchoir in the fold of my elbow about two hours ago and i'm sniffing away at it,before it disappears...it does fade very fast.i love the girl at the guerlain counter in bloomingdales..she gives you a little saucer of coffee beans to smell between smelling......screeeeeeam.
to me shalimar smells not bad ..but is only suited for very exotic, dark women ( arabian/turkish women e.g.) cause their body scent is more intense in general (thats no offense^^ thats just a fact...a brunette smells different than light blonde woman e.g.) & their body chemistry fits to the smell. but shalimar on a petite, blonde girl? hell no :D
@babydollface18 I think I must break all the "rules" when it comes to the kinds of perfumes I enjoy wearing - I'm short, boiled potato pasty and the very opposite of exotic, and yet my favorite scents are all heavy, rich, intense orientals.
@KatiePuckrikSmells well at least u are brunette ;) and i actually think u look kind of exotic..^^everybody can wear want he/she wants of course..but if the perfume does not match one´s appearance or charakter AT ALL then that might be quite irritating for others..^^
@zaulaa I'm guessing there have been changes along the way, just because it seems everything's been reformulated (either because of ingredient restrictions or to appeal to contemporary fumies) -- but I've never smelled an older Shalimar to compare.
@Danu6403 Ha-ha, "Shalimar Barbie". It's funny, though, "plastic doll head" is a common note that people pick up on in perfume. Don't know exactly what that is, other than a bit of vanilla. And plastic, I guess!
@BondGirl29 Shalimar does have a smoky/powdery quality that reminds some of baby powder. It's not your chemistry getting in the way, it's just the associations you have with the smell. There are so many things that determine whether a smell clicks for us or not. Hence the thrill of the perfume chase!
ive smelled shalimar lotsa times yrs ago.and i hated it. maybe now if i smell it itll be different. all the old woman and men love it. oh and chantilly. hahha theres also an old man friend of mine that baught me nina ricci cos it reminded him of a woman he met yrs n yrs ago. i love that one!
@realfam1969 Isn't that funny how people try to recreate long-lost loves with their perfume? Or disturbing...one or the other.
It took me a while to come around to Shalimar. Sometimes it takes years for my nose to really "get" a perfume. It has to do with changing tastes and experiences.
Emeraude is another old school classic - it actually predated Shalimar by 4 years. Unfortunately, they say the original formula's been messed about. Some the older perfumes' ingredients get cheapened down through the years by cynical manufacturers. I would love to smell the original Emeraude!
My grandpa always talks about this perfume! haha And that he loved smelling it on a woman that lived above his apartment as a kid and continued to buy it for my grandpa as he got older. I kinda want to buy it now knowing that other people like it too
Your grandpa sounds like a cool guy. (And I'm guessing you meant that he bought it for your grandma, and not that you had 2 grandpas - cuz then he really WOULD be ahead of his time!)
You've talked about how much you loove shalimar so i want to macy's and i thought I would give it a smell. I couldnt find it so i asked the lady to help me but when i asked she sort of projected her opinion on me and tried to tell me I probably wouldn't like it... that's none of her business! Let me decide!
Anyway, it wasn't for me (a little overpowering) but it smelled really familiar and then i realized my grandma owns it and continues to wear it! I guess she must be a pretty fierce lady.
Cool about your grandma loving Shalimar. And I'm with you on the bossyboots sales assistant - back off, lady!
A few years back, Guerlain brought out a sheer version of Shalimar called Shalimar Light. It bumps up the citrus and phases out the thick smokiness. It reminds me a bit of Sugar by Fresh. It might be a way to "ease into" Shalimar.
shalimar smells bad to me! opium as well...yuuuck. ew i dont like chantilly eithr,,1 i like tho is nina ricci the yellow box cant remember the name...l'air de temps or sumptin..lol
haha! Diggin' your reviews, Katie! Short, sweet and always to the point! I hope you'll be testing Beyonce's new fragrance, HEAT :). No, I am not Kanye West :)
Hi Ellen - Although I applaud your adventuresome-ness in wanting to try new things, I can already tell you that Shalimar may not be for you. It's got a thick, smoky quality to its vanilla, and couldn't be further from fruity. But keep Shalimar in mind, and revisit it from time to time over the years to see how you feel about it.
You are right Shalimar is not for everyone. For me it was an acquired taste. If your used to smelling super fruity floral fragrances Shalimar will throw your nose for a loop, I thought it smelled like gasoline at first. Like most other vintage fragrances you must let it dry down to fully appreciate it. Shalimar is considered a classic for a reason and it's loved by many people. It has all the fume-head's respect!
Shalimar's an emphatic oriental, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. For a much paler, lower key version of Shalimar, I'd suggest the new Prada L'eau Ambrée.
They "improve" formulations for modern tastes, or they cheapen formulations for the bottom line. Or they remove key ingredients to fit with arbitrary health regulations.
KB, glad I tickle your pickle! I've got some more appearances on E!'s "That Morning Show" coming up, as it happens. (I'll post them on my channel after they're broadcast.) And I've hosted a bunch of TV shows in the UK.
Too funny! "Vintage" turned me on to your channel and I'm so glad she did! I'm a perfume whore...well a very descerning whore. ;) And, I'm eager to review your reviews...no pun intended. Thanks for the giggle...on to your next review!

Shalimar is very thick & creamy - it can take some adjusting if you're used to the current style of very sweet, more transparent perfumes.

But keep Shalimar in mind, and revisit it from time to time over the years to see how you feel about it.

hahahahaha i loved kanye's lil interruption

You are right Shalimar is not for everyone. For me it was an acquired taste. If your used to smelling super fruity floral fragrances Shalimar will throw your nose for a loop, I thought it smelled like gasoline at first. Like most other vintage fragrances you must let it dry down to fully appreciate it. Shalimar is considered a classic for a reason and it's loved by many people. It has all the fume-head's respect!
Great vids Katie, keep up the good work!

Thanks, 1stinkylove. Yes, it took a bit of "getting to know you" time for me to understand, then love, Shalimar.

Ha! I love the Kanye insert!!! Not a big fan of Shalimar though :-(

Glad it cracked you up.
Shalimar's an emphatic oriental, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. For a much paler, lower key version of Shalimar, I'd suggest the new Prada L'eau Ambrée.

natesmom, check out my men's playlist! I'm working on adding more masculine fragrances, too.

The original Shalimar was longer lasting and the bergomot was more pronounced. Why do the fix things which were never broken.

They "improve" formulations for modern tastes, or they cheapen formulations for the bottom line. Or they remove key ingredients to fit with arbitrary health regulations.
All bogus reasons, right?

KB, glad I tickle your pickle! I've got some more appearances on E!'s "That Morning Show" coming up, as it happens. (I'll post them on my channel after they're broadcast.) And I've hosted a bunch of TV shows in the UK.
