No fear, all guts. He kept repeating that over and over again, until he reached a plane where no cricketer can ever hope to get. Total awareness and being in the present. Viv was called KING for a good reason.
when the man says that "he felt proud to be given an opportunity to play for his country" you can actually see that pride in his eyes even now.....it is this commitment to country and honor that today's cricketers need to understand....not the money.....there's a reason there will only be one muhammad ali or only one vivian richards...coz they stood and fought for what they believed in.....GREAT!!!!! what an inspiration!!!
no doubt richards was a fearless batsman, however wearing no helmet is not a category to make him greatest. helmets came only after mid-70s. if not wearing helmet is so critical criteria to call a batsman great then all batsman who played before helmets were invented were great. i believe richards was different in the way he used to score runs against very good bowlers...he just to hit six as needed to very good balls.in those days very few batsman used to hit sixers in a test.
No sportsmen can match his style, his swagger, him chewing gum at the crease, I am sure most bowlers came close to shittin in their pants when he came to bat.. he was brutal...
Sir Viv was a great player and I am a big fan of his. But not just Sir Viv, all the great players. I love watching all of them play. Truly a great game to play and watch.
his arrogance and pride and pure class made this young lad a wanna be cricketer. Watching him smash England all over the place every 4 years made me love the game. This interview sums it up.
Not just my favourite cricketer for talent, but my favourite sports personality on the whole.
Young British football and American basket ball 'role models' of today (who domonate gossip magazines and reality television) possess no charm, no wit, no style, no intelligence, no politics, no dignity... People affectionately call him King Viv for many reasons.
Also we must campaign for Fire In Babylon to be shown in British schools as part of black history month.
there were many class batsmen in 70's who were so skilled to face fast bowlers without being hit,and could have follow the great viv by not wearing helmat. it was sad to see great players like chappell brothers, zaheer, barry, gower, gavasker, greenidge wore helmat.
modern batsman lack technique and courage to face even a medium pacer on slow batting tracks without helmat.viv was the last great of the real cricket.don't insult him by comparing him with sachin or ponting.cricket 1875 - 1978.age 103.
@psvyas gavasker was a great player he did not wear a typical cricket helmet ,but he used to wear a specially made head gear for protection during the last stage of his fine career.viv was the only player who never needed any head gear or helmat.helmet has shifted the balance of the game it was fast bowlers winner before helmets at present batting side are the cham. teams like india and sri lank become superpower in the game all due to the innovation of the batting helmets.
@qadri45 india won first worldcup in 1983, the second test playing nation after west indies. i believe india already showed her capability in cricket well before other nations like australia, pakistan, srilanka, newzealand & england. i would not count s africa as they resumed only in 1991. to conclude that helmet has helped only india and srilanka would be biased. if other cricket nations were already playing better without helmet then they would have performed better than india and srilanka.
@psvyas 83 was fluke and 2011 was a design. india produced one world class batsman in 70 and non in 50s 60s with 30 to 35 average.after wearing helmets average went up 40 to 55..india was never a dominating cricket force in the world before the helmets.in 76 india had to surrender the test match just to safe indian batsmen from the risk of injury.sachin was hit many times on the head helmet safed him all the times.even in his debut test he was hit if he was not wearing helmet his debut
@psvyas 8 team took part in 83 india was the 6th favorite to lift the trophy.after winning the cup india was beaten badly i think india lost 30 one dayer and were able to win very few against the weaker sides. 83 was a fluke.2011 was desin with lots of black money involvement.cricket have become an industry in india not gentlemen game anymore. lost against the 5th grade aus side in 77 only becoz not able to cope fast bowling due to the use of helmets indian cricket survived.u deny?

it is shame that you are calling 2011 world fixed. the whole world knows india is unbeatable at home, so it was easy for india to win besides having very good team.
@psvyas my nationality no matter. the main point is india was never a cricketing force before the helmet era.india was only able produce many run makers after the arrival of the helmets not before. i bet without helmet sachin batting average 30 with the technique he made many runs was never possible if he batted bare headed. i think he was hit on the head for atleast 20 times but thanks to helmet he was able to make runs. he is not a batsman but a helmetman like many orther indians.u m
@qadri45 what a thinking. looks like only india was and is playing with helmet. sachin was hit on face on his first test series, his nose bled with blood and then he continued to bat and scored some 40-50 runs. i bet you would know. if a 16 year old can play after being hit in the face then i bet he would have batted well irrespective of helmet or not. it is really a pity the way you think. it is amusing the way you come up with numbers, i am sure someone has brainwashed you.
@psvyas must accept the fact that indian always lacked the fast bowlers this was the reason batsmen did not have a good record against the fast bowlers in most of the series against the fast bowling many indians use to get retired hurt by short picth bowling.indians were always good against the spin mainly becouse they had slow turning wickets innovation of the helmets covered the weak point of the indian batsmen the fear of a fast bowler was gone from the mind a batsmen indian

However, Sachin does not wear a helmet for his own safety, he doesent have a mentality like Richards, heck no one does. So stop picking on Sachin. Also if Sachin was presented with this challenge im sure he wouldnt turn it down.
Vivian richards always played without a helmet........But I am sure he never played without an Abdomen guard........he he he........Then,no use living for!!!
I am a Pakistani. I have always had great respect for West Indian players. West Indies have produced legends like Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Walsh, Bishop, Marshal and many more. Salute to Sir Viv Rishard a true and fearless player.
No words to describe this guy, but if someone insists I would say that he is the one & only King in Cricket, definition of Pure Guts. Hail King Viv!!!!
No need to compare him with anyone else.....that is fruitless. I am just grateful and very happy that I was a cricket fan in this era because players like this come only once in a lifetime. Thank you Viv for all the memories.............your skill, flair and courage will ensure that you are always remembered as one of the greats. On a final note..........as a CRICKETER (i.e. batsman, fielder, athlete, sportsman) you are definitely among the greatest of all time.
I have to highlight what he said near the end - Viv prepared himself mentally for death. HE WAS READY TO DIE on the cricket field. Every time he went out there he knows it could be his last!!!!!!!!!!
How many sportsman in any games have that mentality
Most people admire him for facing bowling greats like Thompson and Lillee without a helmet; all cocky, chewing gum with an attitude "Show me what you've got, punk!". All that is true, of course. However, most people tend to forget that if he made it to the national team, he did because he faced his own team mates (Marshall, Garner, Holding, Roberts) who could be *LETHAL* with that ball.
A sheer plasure, Indeed! One of the most bravest and hard hitting batsman in the modern era.Yo, Sir Viv is a great man and will always be remembred as one of the greatest :)
What a player, i used to love him come out with the pressure on & he was cool as & started smashing the bowlers everywhere. The power he had was awsome, such a strong bloke inside & out.a true champion.
A run machine, he is the bravest & the greatest. No one can compare with him. Who is there in modern day cricket, where the batsman is not wearing helmet? Everyone is scared of this small ball, when it's in the hand of someone like Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Denis L, Curtly Ambrose, Srinath, Bret Lee, Akhtar and so on.
@thunderbolt2553 Don't forget Thomson, we was the scariest. Also don't worry about a test player not wearing a helmet, when i get into the test side (australian) i wont wear one. I just don't like them, it's as simple as that.
No fear, all guts. He kept repeating that over and over again, until he reached a plane where no cricketer can ever hope to get. Total awareness and being in the present. Viv was called KING for a good reason.

@waughdesilva that is some true words. Also with him facing inter-island teams who also had some formidable bowlers

@thunderbolt2553 what a joke how could u even think of adding SRINATH in the list that includes marshall, holding, lilee, ambrose, lee and akhtar...
MegaDevilsoul 6 months ago
@thunderbolt2553 please remove Srinath from those names.

@thunderbolt2553 you've obviously never been hit on the helmet by 130 km/h plus bowling....it still hurts
giam333 3 months ago
@thunderbolt2553 The moment you put srinath on your list, you ruined it.
