They didn't hate each other. As Leonard Nimoy said, they were both competitive, and they had a friendly "sibling rivalry" going on. Kirk and Spock were created to be best friends before they had filmed any of the episodes.

If this is true, I'm kind of glad... after all, according to this, it was Nimoy's competitiveness that created many of Spock's defining characteristics...
