If you think about both black mesa's and aperture's stories, aperture's is actually pretty dark. The scientists were trying to preserve Carolyn using GLaDOS, but she just killed them all. Abby put the morality core on her, Chell killed her, then woke her up again, Wheatley took her body and put her in a potato, and, finally, GLaDOS let Chell go. While black mesa had 2 alien invasions.

That game had a great ending that's worth going through the hair-pulling puzzles to reach, mostly for that ending track.

I believe they lowered the tone of this track in an update though.

he Portal series is one of those games that they don't have to try to hard to get into the story. They don't even have to try to hard to make the story awesome. Think about it, Portal was basically just puzzles with GlaDOS talking and the end was just you putting it's/her peaces into a fire. then it ended with a a "cake" and started the still alive song. That's all it is but somehow they make the story kick ass.
