I've been hunting there since 1978. It was closed in 2006 under Bush. The UDA traffic has gone down dramatically. 5-6 years ago I would see 200-300 UDA's per day while archery deer hunting. I saw none in 10 days of hunting in Jan 2010.

IF the fortresses are real - are they located in the 3/4 mile stretch of the border in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge? If not - THEY ARE IRRELEVANT to the contention made in this report, that the closure of that 3/4 mile area is a 'give back' of the land to Mexico.
The state police ARE NOT afraid to enter the 3/4 mile stretch of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge that has been closed. it is crawling with Border Patrol. The Pinal county sherrif may be afraid to any number of things in his county, 100 miles from the border, but that has no impact on the status of or reasons for the closing of the south edge of the BANWR. The PIMA county Sheriff reports no such problems, saying the crime wave is 'a media creation'.

From the Buenos Aires Refuge website: June, 2010, Note specifically: "...a small section of land (about 3% of the refuge) along the border was closed to visitation." "...no new restrictions...", "The Refuge will reopen the lands along the border at such time that it is determined to be safe for visitors."
That 3% of the total refuge IS STILL CLOSED. It has been closed since October 3, 2006. As of June, 2010, per their website, that area along the border has NOT been reopened to the public.

Location of birth cannot be changed on a certified copy of birth certificate. I've dealt with this intimately. Persons present and even the names of parents can be changed, but the locations stays the same.

NOTHING about this report is accurate. Do you seriously not get that, or do you just not care? The area was made off-limits TO EVERYONE. The tract of land is NOT outside state control, it is under STRICT State control. How effective that control is may be questioned but it has IN NO WAY been ceeded to Mexico, as the report suggests.
Secondly the closure happened in 2006. Obama Administration decisions have had no impact on the status of that land, as the report alleges.
I accept that illegal immigration is, obviously, against the law. I further accept that the immigration system is in serious need of comprehensive reform; that we cannot run a economy in which the ease and plenty enjoyed by citizens is dependent on cheap labor by non-citizens, without providing a resonable, legal means for the entry and return of that non-citizen work force.

Two points: First the officer in the report is the Sheriff of Pinal County. The area closed is in Pima county. It's not that I don't believe his assessment of what's happening in his county, it's that it has nothing to do with what FOX is claiming about the closure in PIMA county.
2nd. I'm not taking Obama's word on anything. I've read the announcement on the website of the FWS when the closure took place, in 2006, as well as their candid response to FOX's misleading report.

The FOX report is deliberatly misleading. The current administration had nothing to do with the closure of that section of the National Wildlife Refuge and it was closed for border enforcement operations and the risk that presents to NWR visitors, in October of 2006. Is that Obama's fault?

I've been hunting there since 1978. It was closed in 2006 under Bush. The UDA traffic has gone down dramatically. 5-6 years ago I would see 200-300 UDA's per day while archery deer hunting. I saw none in 10 days of hunting in Jan 2010.

The state police ARE NOT afraid to enter the 3/4 mile stretch of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge that has been closed. it is crawling with Border Patrol. The Pinal county sherrif may be afraid to any number of things in his county, 100 miles from the border, but that has no impact on the status of or reasons for the closing of the south edge of the BANWR. The PIMA county Sheriff reports no such problems, saying the crime wave is 'a media creation'.

From the Buenos Aires Refuge website: June, 2010, Note specifically: "...a small section of land (about 3% of the refuge) along the border was closed to visitation." "...no new restrictions...", "The Refuge will reopen the lands along the border at such time that it is determined to be safe for visitors."
That 3% of the total refuge IS STILL CLOSED. It has been closed since October 3, 2006. As of June, 2010, per their website, that area along the border has NOT been reopened to the public.

Ummm, you all DO know this is a blatant lie, right? The closure occurred in 2006 (guess who was President then?) Nothing new has been “restricted.” There are advisory signs, but that’s it. And contrary to popular belief, no there are no children crying in fear here.

Yes, my focus is on FOX. My comment and objections are about FOX and THIS PIECE of reporting. I'm not going into immigration policy, I'm strictly talking about the basic expectation that the media not be totally full of BS.

Location of birth cannot be changed on a certified copy of birth certificate. I've dealt with this intimately. Persons present and even the names of parents can be changed, but the locations stays the same.

NOTHING about this report is accurate. Do you seriously not get that, or do you just not care? The area was made off-limits TO EVERYONE. The tract of land is NOT outside state control, it is under STRICT State control. How effective that control is may be questioned but it has IN NO WAY been ceeded to Mexico, as the report suggests.
Secondly the closure happened in 2006. Obama Administration decisions have had no impact on the status of that land, as the report alleges.

I accept that illegal immigration is, obviously, against the law. I further accept that the immigration system is in serious need of comprehensive reform; that we cannot run a economy in which the ease and plenty enjoyed by citizens is dependent on cheap labor by non-citizens, without providing a resonable, legal means for the entry and return of that non-citizen work force.
I also contend that this discussion would be more productive if based on FACTS and not FOX's fables.

They start with "Critics say..." then go downhill from there. How do they not then state what 'non critics' say? Or even better - speak to someone involved in the closure and see what they say! Fact 1: The whole refuge is not closed, only a 3/4 mile strip along the border is.
Fact 2: The sherriff they talked to is from another county, 100 miles from the closed area.
Fact 4: The area was closed for Border Patrol enforcement operations.
Fact 3: The area of the wildlife refuge was closed in 2006, under Bush - Obama had nothing to do with it.

Two points: First the officer in the report is the Sheriff of Pinal County. The area closed is in Pima county. It's not that I don't believe his assessment of what's happening in his county, it's that it has nothing to do with what FOX is claiming about the closure in PIMA county.
2nd. I'm not taking Obama's word on anything. I've read the announcement on the website of the FWS when the closure took place, in 2006, as well as their candid response to FOX's misleading report.

Once more... No land was in effect "given back" - the area was closed for Border patrol enforcment, it has NOT been abandoned.
The FOX piece blames the 'give-back' which didn't happen on Obama who wasn't in office when the give-back didn't happen.
The FOX peice uses conjectural assertions by the Sheriff of Pinal county, 80 miles from the closed area to back up the idea that the 'given back' area is lawless. The PIMA county sheriff who actually IS there, says it's not.

The report asserts that "THE ADMINISTRATION is, in effect..' giving land back to Mexico. The fact is that the 3/4 mile strip of the National Wildlife Refuge, was closed in 2006. This fact is omitted to avoid implicating Bush and to falsely re-cast the closure as an act by 'the administration', aka Obama.
The FOX report uses the Sheriffs account of lawlessness in Pinal Co to support the idea that the closure was a surrender of that land. It was not. It's in a different county.
