@03bgood I don't see what Sonic Heroes has to do with the eclipse cannon, but apparently GUN repaired the eclipse cannon sometime in between events of sonic heroes-shadow the hedgehog.

I'm honestly surprised noone's connected the dots, I mean,

end of dark story; Camera zooms in on the screen with a "WARNING" alert.

beginning of last story; Eggman noticing said warning.

the core of the ARK was rigged by prof. gerald so that, when all chaos emeralds were inserted, that the colony would NOT fire the cannon, and the colony would fall to earth, thereby destroying it.

one more thing; eggman had the real emerald because of Super Sonic transforming.

Also, it makes sense to do Dark last. Overall, Dark is more challenging than Hero is. It's also more boss oriented than Hero.

In terms of canon, I think a mix of the two stories is the "correct" line. For example, Eggman might have finally placed the seventh emerald in the cannon, which would automatically fire after 24 hours.

However, the emerald reversed the polarity of the Chaos Emeralds, causing a massive feedback of energy, creating an awesome boom, but not likely damaging the cannon itself, since it was designed to handle the energy.

In other words: fake emerald made the energy unusable. No energy = no laser.

here's what I think happened. no matter what story you choose, Eggman somehow gets the Emerald at the end. Sonic was probably able to stop the cannon AFTER Eggman snatched the emerald on the floor.

i'm not sure if this is non-canon or not. Sonic destroyed the eclipse cannon, but then eggman took the last chaos emerald behind tails' back. So if this ending was non-canon, then the canon ending (dark to last) would be that shadow stopped sonic and eggman beat up tails.

so dark story starts before hero and ends afterwards. eggman uses the emrald here and then puts it in the control panel at the end of dark story...only rather than activate the eclipse cannon (guessing that despite the explosion, it was still operational, due to eggman still going through with his plan, as well as that it works in shadow the hedgehog), he initiated a program left behind by his grandfather
