  • Wow.

  • @sundayssheebsmusic

No, this is when metheny start speeding stuff up! Still sounds amazing

  • Too fast, the song lose its groove

  • LOVE seeing this old performance!!! Thanks

  • interresting ! why care the guy is more than fine.

  • Wow! great to see Mark Egan get off like he did back in 1980. Great bass player.

Pat's band was so young back then. Love all of them especially Pat and Lyle. living musical legends.

  • QUE RICO SE ESCUCHA ESTO!!

  • this version is absolutely the best ever!!!

  • マーク・イーガンにジャコの魂が。凄い!!

  • i like the chord insert near the end at 2:58. THAT part is not on the album version! sweet!

  • NO SHIT

  • love jacos quote at 4:08

  • Egan studied with Jaco. Mark Egan is an original cat though - he was doing some simultaneous development of that sound. You'd have to be at the University of Miami (I think it was there) to know how much. Doesn't matter really. I think it's interesting how hard hitting the band in this video is. Pat and Lyle backed off this kind of rhythm so much in the years to come. It's fun to listen to and awesome stuff but definitely part of Pat's roots. He evolved so much.

  • yes that is jaco..jaco plays a 4 string bass ..and this is a 4 string bass..therefore, i you follow the logic,,it's not only jaco but it;s his dna that is on the floor 3 feet in front of the drum riser..

  • great tribute to Jaco the best bassist ever

  • Not Jaco! Mark Egan's good, though.

  • where is jaco?

  • @lynxyazz68 In heaven ; )

Jaco is the name of the song : )

  • Love this tune! From WAY WAY back, great album, Mark Egan Wails! One of my favs.

Made me want to play fretless.

  • from 3:26 it's an orgasm!!

  • flying on this one....

  • is the best group

  • wat does everyone think about playing bass so close to the bridge? I know its easier to play that way (not to say anyone was taking an easy way out), but the bright tone kinda bugs me sometimes. I like playing closer to the fretboard for that tone, however, it is more difficult to play as quickly.

  • As a tribute. I suppose...

  • The name of this theme is "Jaco". Ok?

  • Vale aclarar que el tema se llama "Jaco".

  • Jaco Pastorius

  • pat metheny group with th right perfect people!!

  • Little did Mark know 31 years ago the confusion this piece would cause on youtube today. Not only is the song named "Jaco" but they can SEE me and they still think I'm him!?! Poor Mark.

  • Mark has some cool solo stuff too.

  • Awww look how young pat looks :D

  • "Jaco" is the name of song. The bass player is Mark Egan.

  • "Jaco" is the name of song. The bass player is Mark Egan.

  • exelente bajista

  • IS IT SO FREAKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE NAME OF THE SONG IS JACO!!??? HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ABOUT TRIBUTE-SONGS?? NO ONE EVER CLAIMED THAT IT WAS JACO ON BASS!!

  • ..is that Jaco ?

  • it's a fantastic tune, love it, great tribute to the greatest. and by the way...THATS NOT JACO!

  • @rulitopechocho hahaha that's the name of the song you aaasss... it's Mark Egan

  • where is jaco?

  • THATS NOT JACO!!!

  • It's funny to see a whole debate about Mark Egan playing like Jaco (noting that Chileanskies precised it), because it's entirely legitimate for mr.Egan to play this way, because he was Jaco's protege, he's an excellent bass player with an amazing career, and over it all, this song is a tribute to our favourite bass player.

Should we blame Marcus Miller for the way he plays on "Mr Pastorius", or Hadrien Feraud on "For Jaco"? Definitly not, let the music play :)

  • Never a bad piece of Metheny material - he's an amazing musician all around! I love his work on Question and Answer with Roy Haynes and Dave Holland. Great album.

Also enjoyed "Day Trip" album and "Speaking of Now" album. Both great work!

  • I had a 15 year old student show up for his first lesson with his USA Jazz Bass his parents bought for him and proceed to play for me Portrait Of Tracy, relatively well on a fretted bass. I asked him how he learned that difficult tune, he said from the tabs-I asked if he new the names of any of the chords he was playing or how the triads we're spelled, he said no why do I need to know that? I have tabs for all I want to know. I quote Jaco him self "cleverness is no disguise for true awareness"

  • Yeah, Egan is right up there with the best jazz bassists. Just listened to PMG first album 1978 today, but nothing compared to this performance. Unbelievable musicianship on the part of all...

  • This is a very young looking Mark Egan. At least while you debate, give the guy his do. A great player indeed...

  • This is a very young looking Mark Egan. At least while you debate, give the guy his do. A great player indeed...

  • hey! this isnt jaco! THESE ARE LIES I REFUSE TO READ THE COMMENTS POSTED BEFORE MINE!!!!!!

  • @MonkeyCha0s

    wtf ayo sa?

  • Don't get me wrong, but this bassist proves how well in tune Jaco was able to play on the fretless, and how nobody could do it quite like him. Not a bad solo by any means, but ever so slightly out of tune during some phrases.

  • funny how the young guys are used to seeing misleading youtube titles and therefore jump to the conclusion that this is an example of it while us old guys laugh at their naive innocence - as the old guys know full well the history/relationship between Metheny and Jaco. Doesn't bother me as long as the young musicians pick up on this classic stuff but I must say it is very amusing to read the comments.

  • Mark Eagan has his own style, even way back then. Hear all the glissando. I do not think he was trying to copy Jaco at all. Only Lyle Mays did not gain any weight after all these years though.

  • @ishta ummm, this bass player CLEARLY regurgitated Jaco's sound and style.

  • For those who complain that this wasn't Jaco playing: Find a calculator, divide your shoe size by itself and subtract 1 from the result. That number represents you.

  • Great!!!!

  • Mark Egan plays beautiful bass, he studied under Jaco ay uof M I think he is allowed to play all over this !!!

  • Well you can tell this Bassist coped "Sir Jaco's) style to a friggin; Tee!!!!Go figure!!Absolutely Amazing band & great Bassist too!!!!

  • wtf!!!??????????????

  • No offense to the song's namesake, but if it were up to me, I'd entitle this one..."Egan".

  • 4:25 now I am sure this is Pat :D JEEEEZ he looks so young. At first I thought it's a girl on leading guitar :P Great song, love YT for this :)

  • yes!! good solo....

great one to learn, as you can see it right there too

  • is his bass fret-less?

  • @leylabbb Ye-s.

  • @rotosoundz Changed your tune shit-for-brains?

  • hey right on, i've listened to this album for over 20yrs and that was the first time seeing them . !! thanks for posting it.

  • By having no frets on it!

  • @sftoon I Lmao'ed

    What a amazing answer. lol

  • How is Egan getting such a fretless tone out of his bass? It's brilliant!

  • @kameleon40

It is a fretless bass. It is a Fender "Precision Bass" with the frets removed. The lines are there for reference, and from where the frets were.

  • @renatobrizzi Hey look at this video.. Jaco rocking da hell out of our ears!!!

    watch?v=PCamAcERwdA

  • Man!! How can Jaco play so damn well on this track??? He's amazing.. I went to see him last weekend here in Boston.. It was a blast!!!

  • @leotvz I think he is one of the greatests! still playing at high level nowadays!

  • @leotvz Mark Egan

  • @leotvz Jaco's been dead for a long time...

  • Comment removed

  • Hey you guys.. sorry you've missed it.. I am almost certain that this is not Jaco..

  • wait... wait a second...somethings wrong... OMG THATS NOT JACO!!!

  • Sometimes reading comments on youtube is like watching a couple of old farts having a fight, "you this and you that" (with stronger language.) After 60 years of arguing they will of course never see eye to eye. There are a lot of inane people who come here just to provoke others because it's the only way for them to get attention. Judging from their spelling mistakes, they did not even finish primary school. So if your IQ is average or +, why buy into this? It only taints the terrific tube.

  • the way up...

  • That´s Mark Egan on the bass !!!

  • YO Fellas !!!1

    that´s Mark Egan .. !!!!

  • super thumbs up for this!

this kind of vid is what makes Youtube so great.

    thank you!

  • That's not Jaco. But it's good sh*t nonetheless.

  • wow a love this ensemble ♪ ♫

  • A not idiot question:

Someone knows if this music is FOR Jaco?

  • but he could be Mark Egan....lmao

  • that guy couldn't even be a zit on Jacos ass

  • @rotosoundz You are ,without a doubt , the most musically retarded oaf on youtube.

  • this tune rules so hard

  • This is Mark Egan on bass, a phenomenal player but merely an acolyte of Jaco!

  • damn this guy jives

  • Great Bass playing!

  • Es un Excelente Bajista y Maestro el Señor Mark Eagan!!!!, que alguna vez fue alumno particular de Jaco!!!. No en vano el Señor Pat Metheny lo eligiò como su Bajista!!!!!. • why there are so many idiots on youtube

  • @deadzior because the world is full of them

  • @icanthelpitfolks that makes sense

  • One of the greatest Bass players ever

  • you people are hilareous.....get a life

  • @rotosoundz you people. hahahah

  • @rotosoundz OK, I won't say this is NOT Jaco, which is obvious. I also am a jaco fan who was fooled by the name on your video, which by the way, I enjoyed a lot. That said, I would at least give proper credit to the awesome bass player that Mr. Mark Egan is and the important role he played in Pat's band, although, he was mostly kept in the background.

  • @rotosoundz LOL aint that the truth.

  • Pat Metheny composed this, then realised that the melody sounded very much like his friend Jaco Pastorius' tune "Come on, Come over", so he named this composition "Jaco".

  • I hate to disappoint the person who thinks this is Jaco, but it really isn't. It's Mark Egan on bass, Dan Gottlieb on drums, and Lyle Mays on keys. Jaco never played with the Pat Metheny Group. He did play on Metheny's "Bright Size Life" with Bobby Moses, and on different projects that were not the classic Metheny group everyone remembers.

  • hey thats not jaco !

  • Mark Egan on bass...he tears it up!

  • That solo was really cleaned up on the album...

  • Stop saying of course this isn't Jaco. Of course of course it isn't Jaco. Jaco Pastorious - dunno much about him, but what I've heard on YT says he was a funk plodder who could bore the tits off a bore (and anyone with more than 10 years experience of western music) in under four minutes. Anyone direct me to the interesting Jaco stuff?

  • @sxmadrid

Jaco's not involved with this recording in the slightest my friend.

Havona by Weather Report if you want something exciting.

  • @yeatsg As I said, 'of course of course this isn't Jaco'. Slight misunderstanding. Thanks for the WR song - cool. Jaco is a special basist, a bridge between Bootsy and Clarke. This is a nice jam with PM too - watch?v=DP7j_OP81bI&feature=related.

  • @sxmadrid .......try weather report-volcano for hire.....

  • PEDRO AZNAR FROM ARGENTINA...........NOT JACO,,,,SORRY

  • @vieneareinar ...of course Aznar is a fabulous bassist too, but this one is Mark Egan playing at PMG...

  • I'd feel pretty embarrassed if I was a Jaco fan and didn't know that Metheny and Jaco were huge friends back from their days at Miami and that Jaco played on Metheny's first album "Bright Size Life." Check out the video on you tube.

  • Jeez, you Jaco fans are so touchy, you'd think you would know when a song was named after him - that's right, THE NAME OF THE SONG IS JACO ! ! ! OKAY?? Inspired by Jaco, in tribute to him, etc. One of Pat's most famous tunes! Check out the album someday. Oh, and for the record, I saw him twice and he changed my bass playing forever.

  • @masonpa1

    :)

  • @masonpa1 Lol, if they don't know this tune's NAME is Jaco, they're not big enough music fans.

  • @masonpa1 mark egan on bass. jaco was beaten to death by a florida bouncher after they cut him off and he refused to leave, they left him in a parking lot for dead, he died later in the hospital.

  • @masonpa1 Name of the song is "Jaco." Jaco and Pat only played together on record once and that was Metheny's very first recording (and one of his best) "Bright Size Life."

  • @metamorphosis67 - wasn't he with Jaco on 'Live in Central park' with Joni Mitchel, Brecker, etc? Or, is my memory skewed by everything I've had to drink tonight?

  • @m41incanis Oh yeah, you're right, they also played together on that one Joni Mitchell tour that's captured on the "Shadow & Light" album, Lyle Mays & Michael Brecker were also in that band. Those are the only two occasions I know of on official recordings, there might be bootlegs here and there.

  • @masonpa1 the bassist is mark egan (young),no jaco! ijaco is still the number one forever.

  • Mark Egan

  • @TheHippor ...perfect!!!

  • i was there when it all ended for jaco

    thats mark engan playing bass

  • i was there when it all ended for jaco

  • ok I'm just gonna come out and say it. I fucking hate fretless basses, worst tone ever.

  • @kristofor12345 - Glad you came out of the closet to reveal your tin ear.

  • actually it's not pat metheny its an impersonator

  • fake jaco, he is not jaco, NOT jaco..

Wtf?? he ain't no Jaco man !

  • @villavicencio321

this song is dedicated to jaco from pat metheny in a great work!!! you probably ignore this fact...it isn't a fake, it's a song called "jaco" extract from the album "Path Metheny Group" -.- ...leasten this album!

  • This isn't Jaco...

  • he is not jaco :D

  • Nice. yeah, Pat wrote a song called Jaco as a tribute. These guys were all at the top of their game right here We Love you Pat!

  • Faved.

  • heavy shit man

  • Was Mark Egan a student taught by Jaco ? His sound is very similiar to Pastorius.

  • @KingTubby187 u dun hav to be taught by jaco to sound like him

  • @KingTubby187 Egan did take some lessons off Pastorius when he was a student at Berklee. According to the Milkowski "Jaco" biog.

  • There is a wonderful vocal rendition of this song (entitled, "Jaco"), by a group of sisters that called themselves Perri. They were rooted in gospel music, but could sing pop material, and among other things put lyrics to several of Mr Metheny's tunes. In fact, Pat was so knocked out by tapes they'd sent him, he brought them onstage at a number of concerts around the west coast in the mid 80s.

    This music still sounds fresh.

  • Jaco would blow Marc Egan out of the box

  • Mark Egan in fine form, hes such an unappreciated bassist and so talented as you can see along with Dan Gottlieb.

Why in the world isnt this on DVD!

Thank you very much for sharing these classic moments in Metheny's history.

Any chance this "might" be made available?

  • It actually is mark egan, not jaco

  • I say Mark Egan!

  • con jaco pastorius, es tremendo. geniales

  • It is quite understandable why people might think Jaco would be playing on this because they were friends and often played with each other. It could have been a guest appearance. I knew the name of the song was Jaco but others may not. Mark Egan is a fine bass player so enjoy.

  • The bassist is Mark Egan...

  • That's Mark Egan on Bass

  • Mark Egan is amazing!

  • DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHO IS THIS GREAT BASS PLAYER? MARK EGAN? OBVIOUSLY NOT JACO, UNLESS HE PUT A MASK ON.

  • @yaneasalgueiro This is indeed Mark Egan. I was fortunate to have met him shortly after his '88 album, A Touch of Light. He and saxophonist Bill Evans put on a clinic at a local music store for Pedulla basses, which is also local. I asked him about his experience with Jaco and he laughed and said that he took a few lessons which consisted of Jaco playing and him just watching and listening. FYI, at the time, Mark played his Pedulla basses through Hartke cabs.

  • @SteelersFANinMA It's funny what you say about Jaco's "lessons". Some other well known bass player, I forget who, took lessons and said pretty much the same thing but said the "lesson" was just the two of them playing along with each other. It takes more than being a good player to be a good teacher.

  • This guy might not be Jaco BUT HE IS A HELL OF A PLAYER

Too bad people don't see him for what he is and the conversation shifts to if he is Jaco or not

    Who cares

    Watch the guy IS FANTASTIC

  • Jeez, this is great to see! I loved this version of the the Pat Metheny Group......saw them at the Maples Inn in Pointe Claire in 1978....this is a fantastic version of this song!

  • The song is called "Jaco". It's tribute by PM to Jaco.

  • @huskybones It's not a tribute as such. He called it 'Jaco' after he realised that the melody was similar to one of Jaco's own tunes, 'Come On, Come Over', and he didn't want to try and pretend that it wasn't.

  • The song is called "Jaco". It's a tribute by PM to jaco.

  • God, I got to this video misleaded as I thought it was Jaco Pastorius, but it was a happy mistake. I love this!

I had only heard PMG on a recent concert, but old stuff always catches my ears!

  • good stuff but bright size life still the best....poor ole pat got out played on that one!

  • The name of the TUNE is Jaco you morons.

  • LOL, The name of the song is JACO. Of course in tribute.

  • Mark Egan is a fine bassist. Him and Danny Gottlieb went on to form their own band for awhile...good stuff! Still my favorite Metheny album is Bright Size Life, with Jaco, and Bob Moses...simply genius...R.I.P. Jaco!!
