hello guitar fans, who want to know the work of tb Mazin Silva, Brazilian guitarist, feel free to listen to Brazilian guitar,,,, Mazin SILVA (search youtube)
Egan studied with Jaco. Mark Egan is an original cat though - he was doing some simultaneous development of that sound. You'd have to be at the University of Miami (I think it was there) to know how much. Doesn't matter really. I think it's interesting how hard hitting the band in this video is. Pat and Lyle backed off this kind of rhythm so much in the years to come. It's fun to listen to and awesome stuff but definitely part of Pat's roots. He evolved so much.
yes that is jaco..jaco plays a 4 string bass ..and this is a 4 string bass..therefore, i you follow the logic,,it's not only jaco but it;s his dna that is on the floor 3 feet in front of the drum riser..
wat does everyone think about playing bass so close to the bridge? I know its easier to play that way (not to say anyone was taking an easy way out), but the bright tone kinda bugs me sometimes. I like playing closer to the fretboard for that tone, however, it is more difficult to play as quickly.
Little did Mark know 31 years ago the confusion this piece would cause on youtube today. Not only is the song named "Jaco" but they can SEE me and they still think I'm him!?! Poor Mark.
IS IT SO FREAKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE NAME OF THE SONG IS JACO!!??? HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ABOUT TRIBUTE-SONGS?? NO ONE EVER CLAIMED THAT IT WAS JACO ON BASS!!
It's funny to see a whole debate about Mark Egan playing like Jaco (noting that Chileanskies precised it), because it's entirely legitimate for mr.Egan to play this way, because he was Jaco's protege, he's an excellent bass player with an amazing career, and over it all, this song is a tribute to our favourite bass player.
Should we blame Marcus Miller for the way he plays on "Mr Pastorius", or Hadrien Feraud on "For Jaco"? Definitly not, let the music play :)
Never a bad piece of Metheny material - he's an amazing musician all around! I love his work on Question and Answer with Roy Haynes and Dave Holland. Great album.
Also enjoyed "Day Trip" album and "Speaking of Now" album. Both great work!
I had a 15 year old student show up for his first lesson with his USA Jazz Bass his parents bought for him and proceed to play for me Portrait Of Tracy, relatively well on a fretted bass. I asked him how he learned that difficult tune, he said from the tabs-I asked if he new the names of any of the chords he was playing or how the triads we're spelled, he said no why do I need to know that? I have tabs for all I want to know. I quote Jaco him self "cleverness is no disguise for true awareness"
Yeah, Egan is right up there with the best jazz bassists. Just listened to PMG first album 1978 today, but nothing compared to this performance. Unbelievable musicianship on the part of all...
Don't get me wrong, but this bassist proves how well in tune Jaco was able to play on the fretless, and how nobody could do it quite like him. Not a bad solo by any means, but ever so slightly out of tune during some phrases.
funny how the young guys are used to seeing misleading youtube titles and therefore jump to the conclusion that this is an example of it while us old guys laugh at their naive innocence - as the old guys know full well the history/relationship between Metheny and Jaco. Doesn't bother me as long as the young musicians pick up on this classic stuff but I must say it is very amusing to read the comments.
Mark Eagan has his own style, even way back then. Hear all the glissando. I do not think he was trying to copy Jaco at all. Only Lyle Mays did not gain any weight after all these years though.
For those who complain that this wasn't Jaco playing: Find a calculator, divide your shoe size by itself and subtract 1 from the result. That number represents you.
Sometimes reading comments on youtube is like watching a couple of old farts having a fight, "you this and you that" (with stronger language.) After 60 years of arguing they will of course never see eye to eye. There are a lot of inane people who come here just to provoke others because it's the only way for them to get attention. Judging from their spelling mistakes, they did not even finish primary school. So if your IQ is average or +, why buy into this? It only taints the terrific tube.

@rotosoundz OK, I won't say this is NOT Jaco, which is obvious. I also am a jaco fan who was fooled by the name on your video, which by the way, I enjoyed a lot. That said, I would at least give proper credit to the awesome bass player that Mr. Mark Egan is and the important role he played in Pat's band, although, he was mostly kept in the background.
Pat Metheny composed this, then realised that the melody sounded very much like his friend Jaco Pastorius' tune "Come on, Come over", so he named this composition "Jaco".
I hate to disappoint the person who thinks this is Jaco, but it really isn't. It's Mark Egan on bass, Dan Gottlieb on drums, and Lyle Mays on keys. Jaco never played with the Pat Metheny Group. I'd feel pretty embarrassed if I was a Jaco fan and didn't know that Metheny and Jaco were huge friends back from their days at Miami and that Jaco played on Metheny's first album "Bright Size Life." Check out the video on you tube.
Jeez, you Jaco fans are so touchy, you'd think you would know when a song was named after him - that's right, THE NAME OF THE SONG IS JACO ! ! ! OKAY?? Inspired by Jaco, in tribute to him, etc. One of Pat's most famous tunes! Check out the album someday. Oh, and for the record, I saw him twice and he changed my bass playing forever.
@masonpa1 mark egan on bass. jaco was beaten to death by a florida bouncher after they cut him off and he refused to leave, they left him in a parking lot for dead, he died later in the hospital.
@masonpa1 Name of the song is "Jaco." Jaco and Pat only played together on record once and that was Metheny's very first recording (and one of his best) "Bright Size Life."
@metamorphosis67 - wasn't he with Jaco on 'Live in Central park' with Joni Mitchel, Brecker, etc? Or, is my memory skewed by everything I've had to drink tonight?
@m41incanis Oh yeah, you're right, they also played together on that one Joni Mitchell tour that's captured on the "Shadow & Light" album, Lyle Mays & Michael Brecker were also in that band. Those are the only two occasions I know of on official recordings, there might be bootlegs here and there.
this song is dedicated to jaco from pat metheny in a great work!!! you probably ignore this fact...it isn't a fake, it's a song called "jaco" extract from the album "Path Metheny Group" -.- ...leasten this album!
There is a wonderful vocal rendition of this song (entitled, "Jaco"), by a group of sisters that called themselves Perri. They were rooted in gospel music, but could sing pop material, and among other things put lyrics to several of Mr Metheny's tunes. In fact, Pat was so knocked out by tapes they'd sent him, he brought them onstage at a number of concerts around the west coast in the mid 80s.
It is quite understandable why people might think Jaco would be playing on this because they were friends and often played with each other. It could have been a guest appearance. I knew the name of the song was Jaco but others may not. Mark Egan is a fine bass player so enjoy.
@yaneasalgueiro This is indeed Mark Egan. I was fortunate to have met him shortly after his '88 album, A Touch of Light. He and saxophonist Bill Evans put on a clinic at a local music store for Pedulla basses, which is also local. I asked him about his experience with Jaco and he laughed and said that he took a few lessons which consisted of Jaco playing and him just watching and listening. FYI, at the time, Mark played his Pedulla basses through Hartke cabs.
@SteelersFANinMA It's funny what you say about Jaco's "lessons". Some other well known bass player, I forget who, took lessons and said pretty much the same thing but said the "lesson" was just the two of them playing along with each other. It takes more than being a good player to be a good teacher.
Jeez, this is great to see! I loved this version of the the Pat Metheny Group......saw them at the Maples Inn in Pointe Claire in 1978....this is a fantastic version of this song!
Jeez, this is great to see! I loved this version of the the Pat Metheny Group......saw them at the Maples Inn in Pointe Claire in 1978....this is a fantastic version of this song!
@huskybones It's not a tribute as such. He called it 'Jaco' after he realised that the melody was similar to one of Jaco's own tunes, 'Come On, Come Over', and he didn't want to try and pretend that it wasn't.
Mark Egan is a fine bassist. Him and Danny Gottlieb went on to form their own band for awhile...good stuff! Still my favorite Metheny album is Bright Size Life, with Jaco, and Bob Moses...simply genius...R.I.P. Jaco!!

m41incanis 8 months ago
@m41incanis Oh yeah, you're right, they also played together on that one Joni Mitchell tour that's captured on the "Shadow & Light" album, Lyle Mays & Michael Brecker were also in that band. Those are the only two occasions I know of on official recordings, there might be bootlegs here and there.

Was Mark Egan a student taught by Jaco ? His sound is very similiar to Pastorius.

@KingTubby187 u dun hav to be taught by jaco to sound like him
larry3393 1 year ago
@KingTubby187 Egan did take some lessons off Pastorius when he was a student at Berklee. According to the Milkowski "Jaco" biog.

This music still sounds fresh.

Jaco would blow Marc Egan out of the box

Mark Egan in fine form, hes such an unappreciated bassist and so talented as you can see along with Dan Gottlieb.
Why in the world isnt this on DVD!
Thank you very much for sharing these classic moments in Metheny's history.
Any chance this "might" be made available?

It is quite understandable why people might think Jaco would be playing on this because they were friends and often played with each other. It could have been a guest appearance. I knew the name of the song was Jaco but others may not. Mark Egan is a fine bass player so enjoy.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHO IS THIS GREAT BASS PLAYER? MARK EGAN? OBVIOUSLY NOT JACO, UNLESS HE PUT A MASK ON.
yaneasalgueiro 1 year ago
@yaneasalgueiro This is indeed Mark Egan. I was fortunate to have met him shortly after his '88 album, A Touch of Light. He and saxophonist Bill Evans put on a clinic at a local music store for Pedulla basses, which is also local. I asked him about his experience with Jaco and he laughed and said that he took a few lessons which consisted of Jaco playing and him just watching and listening. FYI, at the time, Mark played his Pedulla basses through Hartke cabs.
SteelersFANinMA 1 year ago
@SteelersFANinMA It's funny what you say about Jaco's "lessons". Some other well known bass player, I forget who, took lessons and said pretty much the same thing but said the "lesson" was just the two of them playing along with each other. It takes more than being a good player to be a good teacher.

This guy might not be Jaco BUT HE IS A HELL OF A PLAYER
Too bad people don't see him for what he is and the conversation shifts to if he is Jaco or not
Who cares
Watch the guy IS FANTASTIC

The song is called "Jaco". It's tribute by PM to Jaco.
huskybones 1 year ago
@huskybones It's not a tribute as such. He called it 'Jaco' after he realised that the melody was similar to one of Jaco's own tunes, 'Come On, Come Over', and he didn't want to try and pretend that it wasn't.

God, I got to this video misleaded as I thought it was Jaco Pastorius, but it was a happy mistake. I love this!
I had only heard PMG on a recent concert, but old stuff always catches my ears!

Mark Egan is a fine bassist. Him and Danny Gottlieb went on to form their own band for awhile...good stuff! Still my favorite Metheny album is Bright Size Life, with Jaco, and Bob Moses...simply genius...R.I.P. Jaco!!
