Oh man. The Sun Ra Arkestra came to Tasmania this year and did a workshop... they actually got me to get up and sing with them... one of the most surreal moments of my life!
Sooo happy to see and hear and feel this all again. Saw it live in black and white tv in the last century, recorded it on an 8 track. But it all got left in the last century. What do you do when you know that you know that you know what you know is wrong. You turn and face the music.
The truth and magic and majesty of Sun Ra and his Arkestra. May it live foreever.
Awesome to hear David Sanborn playing some decidedly not-smooth jazz soloing at the end there. Al Green looked like he was bored out of his mind. Takes his shades off, then puts them back on and swaps the tambourine for an agogo. The white girl standing next to him (I think that's Syd Straw?) looked like she found it amusing too!
haha that's what I'm talkin bout. Wish my friends listened to good music like this. People my age listen to watered down CRAP. Sun Ra has feeling in his music and a philosophy. No musicians today, some aren't even that, come close to what Sun Ra did.
@pandasnakeman Oh, that's a tough one. I'm pretty sure it's on one of the live albums from this period. It was a staple of the Arkestra around this time and often used for one of those 'parade around the club' chants they used to end a set with. Not sure if it was ever recorded in a studio tho'
@georgerobey Yeah, how 'bout that. Most of the Arkestra guys would double on percussion. If you're interested, check out the album Night of the Purple Moon. He's the main drummer on that, the ONLY drummer for most of it. He does a pretty good job too. John may have been just 'serviceable' on a trap set, but yeah he could swing!
Damn, check out David Sanborn going outer space in his solo near the end of Space is The Place! I dont expect anyone to believe me, but I gave Sonny those glasses in 1988 - hoping he might wear them in a high profile venue. National TV's pretty high up there. When I saw them, I couldn't think of anyone better suited to wear them in solar health.
May have given this a 1-star rating by mistake. My apologies - I *love* this video. Will try to reverse my rating if my dodgy connection stays alive long enough.

This must be among the most revolutionary moments in music interview TV.
