There was a program on bbc Panorama last night about talk on bringing in a tax for unhealthy foods like chocolate.. because everyones getting fat? Well what do the bbc exspect? When they replaced all the sports programs with cookery programs instead! Come on BBC...(if ya reading this)....reinstate Grandstand and bring back ALL the sports.
Absolutely loved this at the time.the beeb havent lost that much sport though still got golf, rugby footie, snooker, motogp, tennis, athletics(theyre just on red button now)and now F1 again, which is much better covered now than in the days when they used to"cross over to murray walker"about 10 mins before a qualifying/race.The only things they aint got are horse racing(still main ones the national etc)touring cars(which is better on itv4 with steve ryder)and skiing which lets face it is shite anyway!
Bring this music back immediately, BBC! 'm not paying my licencese fees until this comes back! Next thing you know, they'll have a tune sung in Arabic by terrorists. I do niot want my sports time to be interrupoted by terrorism. Sort it out Cameron!!!!
I soooo love the theme music for grandstand!! So many memories of a Saturday as a child!!! Reminds me of my grandad and how much I miss him. Best theme music!! Bring it back BBC
Even if only really watch it during Wimbledon or for gymnastics or Figure Skating. This theme played at after Swap Swap and before the evening news. It was the theme news to Saturday and I loved the opening and closing credits. And the evening always started with the soothing sound of the football results that were always typed at the bottom of the screen.
This one was good . Never cared too much for the first one . However what about the one before this ? Remeber it being pretty goos but can't remeber for the life of me how it went . Would know it if I heard it though . Changed to this one in the mid 70s . But can't seem to find the one prior to this in You Tube
I'm taking a a stab in the dark here, but does anyone know the name of the shout that was heard all the time on an old 90s football prgramme? it sounded something like GOAL LAZIO! and had a long echo, and was played each time the progamme moved to a new match.
The programme was Gazzetta Football Italia on Channel 4. The shout you refer to, although sounding like Goal Lazio, was actually Golaccio which in Italian means Goaltastic or something like that. Hope that answers your question.
The theme just makes it. The BBC used to be so epic for big themes. If you look at the titles, all they did was string a bit of sports footage together. That theme could make anything look good.
Anyone seen the new titles for the Championship show? How excruciatingly, annoyingly bad are they? Classic example of how the BBC has lost its touch these days.
Oh man, that made me so nostalgic. I live in the USA now and things like this really make me miss the BBC! I used to be a grandstand addict when I was a teen. Especially for watching Nigel Mansell in F1!
same here, although I'm in Canada - the BBC always had the greatest music for sports, soul limbo for the cricket, grand prix, ski sunday, pot black and the rest of the snooker coverage, the champions theme for the grand national - and using life of riley for goal of the month and nessun dorma for Italia 90 - nobody did that better than the BBC
It would be nice to have Grandstand back but look at what the Beeb did to it during its last few years. Football Focus AND final Score had their own Idents and it was only a matter of time. As for regular wall-to wall sport on saturdays now, seen the schedules lately?!? Some summer Sats, no sport on BBC! Unbelievable! And don't forget the Sunday version!!
Why do people keep saying "Bring back Grandstand?" It's not as if the Beeb no longer has wall-to-wall sport on Saturdays. The only thing that's really gone is the theme tune and the central studio.

We all say that kind of thing depending on what decade we were born. My children will be reminiscing about the tv they watched in their second deade alive because thats the first tv they remember. Tv is much better than it ever was. It is continually getting better. But we forget how amatueurish TV was in previous decades because things move on so slowly. i know what you mean though. I miss TV in the 90's too. But thats only because i was a child.
As far as I can tell the intros show: England scoring a try against France Some basketball game A football match, might be Spurs scoring England at the 1991 world cup A match a wembly Rugby league horse racing Sally Gunnell at the 92 Olyimpics Nick Faldo playing a shot Swimming
Classic! Haven't heard this in years. The music is so innocent sounding. Makes sport seem so great. Conjures up images of fair play and chaps with mustaches having a pint after cricket!
this is one of my favourite songs of all time. when ever it used to come on when i was a kid i'd run into the front room and spin round in circles. thanks for adding this!!
Oh, and the try that's scored on 2:19, I was sat about a foot away from it on the side of the pitch with the photographers. That was amazing watching a 5 nations game from there :)

Cool though. I think it was good that they got rid of it, it's not like there is any less sport on as a result, just less of the sport most people could care less about.

yeah the epic BBC Sports ident from 1989-1992 represented BBC at the height of it's extreme power.... bring back the globe its time the BBC brought back that power again
The ident from 1992-6 was also quite neat but the one from 1998 represents BBC Sport starting to go downhill. The modernised globe doesn't look right and the jingle doesn't sound right either. Given that the thing was thrown together quite quickly after the Beeb made a last-minute decision to keep the globe following the corporate change. And while it was on cricket was lost to Channel 4 and Des Lynam to ITV.
i just like to see how things changed so much i mean look at the difference in grandstand intros and the bbc sport logo its gone from crap in 1994 to good in 1996 i think its funny how back then things seemed the same but it was completely crap compared to later 90s i was born in 1991 btw i think the tunes class so is the theme from the bill
True memories from my early years of Loving Sport here. I'd be 9 or 10 and just glued to the TV for Hours on end on a Saturday Afternoon watching this. This is my earliest memory of actually adoring something on tv and i wish they'd never stopped it. But i guess with Sky and Setanta involved these days, times have to change
Well Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1997 so it must be that year on the last 2 Grandstand clips and Man United won the FA Cup in 1996 so the second one must be 1996 approximately.
They managed to find a clip of Henman winning something...
