  • They managed to find a clip of Henman winning something...

  • Great times they were the days!!!

  • BBC Sport is BOLLUCKS!

Since Grandstand finished, they have slashed...

    - coverage of Horse Racing / Show Jumping

    - coverage of Golf

    - coverage of Athletics

    - coverage of Swimming

    and in 2012 ...

    - Formula One

    WELL DONE!!!!!

  • Best moment 3.36

  • @flashwinton Best Moment .... all of it!

  • BOIIIINNNGGGG!

  • Awww instant time machine :')

    Bring back Granstand! Please?

  • There was a program on bbc Panorama last night about talk on bringing in a tax for unhealthy foods like chocolate.. because everyones getting fat? Well what do the bbc exspect? When they replaced all the sports programs with cookery programs instead! Come on BBC...(if ya reading this)....reinstate Grandstand and bring back ALL the sports.

  • How young does Tiger Woods looks at 2.14!

  • Absolutely loved this at the time.the beeb havent lost that much sport though still got golf, rugby footie, snooker, motogp, tennis, athletics(theyre just on red button now)and now F1 again, which is much better covered now than in the days when they used to"cross over to murray walker"about 10 mins before a qualifying/race.The only things they aint got are horse racing(still main ones the national etc)touring cars(which is better on itv4 with steve ryder)and skiing which lets face it is shite anyway!

  • Bring this music back immediately, BBC! 'm not paying my licencese fees until this comes back! Next thing you know, they'll have a tune sung in Arabic by terrorists. I do niot want my sports time to be interrupoted by terrorism. Sort it out Cameron!!!!

  • I soooo love the theme music for grandstand!! So many memories of a Saturday as a child!!! Reminds me of my grandad and how much I miss him. Best theme music!! Bring it back BBC

  • Bring back Grandstand. I miss that bbc sports show and theme sooo much.

  • The old BBC sport indent at the beginning was fucking awesome. Great memories.

  • nice granstand is the best!

  • Reminds me of those days when there was actual sport on the BBC.

Although it might not be the same, bringing the Grandstand format and theme tune back on the radio might just work.

  • aah i remember my dad watching this when i was like...5...i LOVED the music...the one i remember had goldfish in the titles...which one was that??

  • Even if only really watch it during Wimbledon or for gymnastics or Figure Skating. This theme played at after Swap Swap and before the evening news. It was the theme news to Saturday and I loved the opening and closing credits. And the evening always started with the soothing sound of the football results that were always typed at the bottom of the screen.

  • Really like the BBC Sport ident and theme of that era.

  • Comment removed

  • Always loved the bit at 0:24

  • grandstand theme is kl bring it back

  • i think the bbc should bring back grandstand always remember the theme even as a child

  • Top effort with this! Love it

  • This one was good . Never cared too much for the first one . However what about the one before this ? Remeber it being pretty goos but can't remeber for the life of me how it went . Would know it if I heard it though . Changed to this one in the mid 70s . But can't seem to find the one prior to this in You Tube

  • It's strange, I cry when I hear this despite teh fact I hated it as a child (my dad took over the tv to watch it)

  • I really miss Grandstand. I just wished they kept showing it

  • childhood saturdays ftw. the second one, with Wigan and United, that's the best one :D

  • magic

  • Really amazing how many sports Grandstand managed to fit in.

  • I'm taking a a stab in the dark here, but does anyone know the name of the shout that was heard all the time on an old 90s football prgramme? it sounded something like GOAL LAZIO! and had a long echo, and was played each time the progamme moved to a new match.

  • The programme was Gazzetta Football Italia on Channel 4. The shout you refer to, although sounding like Goal Lazio, was actually Golaccio which in Italian means Goaltastic or something like that. Hope that answers your question.

  • ah. thank you very much, have found it now. cheers!

  • the world was so cheesy 10 years ago :S

  • Wow, I haven't heard the BBC Sport and Grandstand intro in YEARS!!! Memories

  • Classic Saturdays Thanks for posting

  • excellent video mate, brings back so many childhood memories of watching sport on the bbc.

    Top class

  • BBC + Sport =WIN

No adverts, no sponsors, why do they have to have silly restrictions on how much they can spend on sport?

  • Tuuuuune!!

  • The theme just makes it. The BBC used to be so epic for big themes. If you look at the titles, all they did was string a bit of sports footage together. That theme could make anything look good.

Anyone seen the new titles for the Championship show? How excruciatingly, annoyingly bad are they? Classic example of how the BBC has lost its touch these days.

  • too right!!

  • old richard keys.

as i grew up, he was always presenting this.

then became match of the day and gary (walkers guy) lineker presented the show.

    good times

  • Seeing Nigel Mansell on the first intro really brings back memories.

  • Oh man, that made me so nostalgic. I live in the USA now and things like this really make me miss the BBC! I used to be a grandstand addict when I was a teen. Especially for watching Nigel Mansell in F1!

  • same here, although I'm in Canada - the BBC always had the greatest music for sports, soul limbo for the cricket, grand prix, ski sunday, pot black and the rest of the snooker coverage, the champions theme for the grand national - and using life of riley for goal of the month and nessun dorma for Italia 90 - nobody did that better than the BBC

  • It would be nice to have Grandstand back but look at what the Beeb did to it during its last few years. Football Focus AND final Score had their own Idents and it was only a matter of time. As for regular wall-to wall sport on saturdays now, seen the schedules lately?!? Some summer Sats, no sport on BBC! Unbelievable! And don't forget the Sunday version!!

  • Why do people keep saying "Bring back Grandstand?" It's not as if the Beeb no longer has wall-to-wall sport on Saturdays. The only thing that's really gone is the theme tune and the central studio.

  • they should bring BBC grandstand back Saturday television is not the same television now is rubbish go back to like it was in the 80's and 90's

  • oh, the saturday memories

  • Saturdays have never been the same since they cancelled Grandstand.

  • @january301973 when did they cancel grandstand on a satuday? Must have been rather recent?

  • BRING IT BACK!!!

  • Saturdays just aren't the same without it

  • Still sends a shiver down my spine after 15 years. Brilliance.

  • i miss the 90s they had the best tv ive ever watched now its all rubbish RIP decent T.V

  • Made Saturday TV back then worth watching.

  • it is ken doherty

  • yeah yeah yeah good afternoon , get on wit the sport LOL

  • RIP Grandstand. I say take off that crap Final Score and have this back.

  • Sky killed proper sport.

We didn't want to see it all! Only crap sport!

  • Grandstand needs brought back. they show sport on a sat afternoon anyway.

  • My goodness how young does Henman look in the second one!!

  • The 1993 one is the earliest I can remember. I was in denial that Mansell had left F1 for Indycar. So many memories.

  • At 2.24, that snooker player looks like Ken Doherty

  • saturday afternoons just are just not the same without that iconic themetune!!

  • Cracking stuff... I'd forgotten about syncing up the 'boing' with some kind of crash.

Also, weas the BBC contractually obliged to include Nick Faldo until Tiger Woods came along?

  • Andra Agassi

    Nigel Mansell

  • As far as I can tell the intros show: England scoring a try against France Some basketball game A football match, might be Spurs scoring England at the 1991 world cup A match a wembly Rugby league horse racing Sally Gunnell at the 92 Olyimpics Nick Faldo playing a shot Swimming
  • haha this is wicked. now to look up the cagney and lacey theme... xD

  • oh, the nostalgia!

  • If like me you find the video dimensions incorrect, change the URL to: /watch?v=1qf9qi8Q1tg&fmt=18

  • I think someone has said this before, but the music reminds me of old men saying "chaps"... with moustaches playing cricket.

  • Oh Happy Days, when BBC HAD sport to show!!!

  • top show saturday afternoon

  • classic theme!!!

  • Steve Rider was Grandstand. This theme tune meant saturday afternoon sport for me. brilliant times.

  • Best theme ever written. I still remember it note for note.

  • AMAZING!! old memories!! iam soo in love with BBC themes!!

  • top tune

  • You can tell these are early 90s productions

  • A sad day when they axed Grandstand. It was apart of my childhood. Saturday afternoons just will never be the same again.

  • What a great intro theme. It's what your baritone sax was made for!!

Ouch...that poor biker coming off his Suzuki.

  • niall macenzie in british superbikes i believe

  • This is the best sports theme ever!!!!

  • I'm sure there was one when the "boing" was on a tennis player falling over the net sometime, anybody know when that was or am I imagining things?

  • No, I vaguely remember that.

  • It was Becker diving to reach a volley I think.

  • This brings back some golden memories!

  • get back from football training, watch football focus, then grandstand.. brilliant days.

  • They should bring it back for 1 episode, just to hear that tune 1 more time

  • u can listen to it over and over on here lmao ... yah seriously though grandstand you couldnt beat it

  • Classic! Haven't heard this in years. The music is so innocent sounding. Makes sport seem so great. Conjures up images of fair play and chaps with mustaches having a pint after cricket!

  • It's so brilliantly british :D

  • You sure they aren't in succession? That poor presenter looks like he's getting ... somehow older.

  • this is one of my favourite songs of all time. when ever it used to come on when i was a kid i'd run into the front room and spin round in circles. thanks for adding this!!

  • The last two lacked the essential element of something getting hit when the music goes Boing!

  • Which, incidentally has always been my favourite part of the theme tune.

  • Oh, and the try that's scored on 2:19, I was sat about a foot away from it on the side of the pitch with the photographers. That was amazing watching a 5 nations game from there :)

  • I really miss the Grandstand theme tune. Always seemed to make sport more exciting.

  • superb :)

  • i think the earlier versions were much better edited with the beat of the song matching an even ie the rugby try or the car crash. good to see the time was put in

  • I love how each one of them as some clip to match the 'boing' noise in the music.

  • the third and forth ones were pretty much the same.

Cool though. I think it was good that they got rid of it, it's not like there is any less sport on as a result, just less of the sport most people could care less about.

  • Bring back Grandstand, Roger Mosey is an idiot for cancelling it.

  • Which year was each opening broadcast?

  • I think it was 1978 but i maybe wrong

  • You are definitely wrong

  • Fair enough it was a random guess anyway

  • One of the best music peices that exist

  • that's fantastic!!! great video!! where can i download this theme music?

  • Bring Back Grandstand Live Sport on Saturdays and Sundays are not the same without the presenters if it came back who would you have as presenters of Grandstand

  • BBC Sport 'was' powerful but now with that Tit called Roger Mosey..it isnt powerful anymore.

'sigh' we need Grandstand bck BBC Sport is rubbish without it on Saturday/Sunday.

  • yeah the epic BBC Sports ident from 1989-1992 represented BBC at the height of it's extreme power.... bring back the globe its time the BBC brought back that power again

  • The ident from 1992-6 was also quite neat but the one from 1998 represents BBC Sport starting to go downhill. The modernised globe doesn't look right and the jingle doesn't sound right either. Given that the thing was thrown together quite quickly after the Beeb made a last-minute decision to keep the globe following the corporate change. And while it was on cricket was lost to Channel 4 and Des Lynam to ITV.

  • The BBC Sport idents from 1996 and 1998 weren't all that good, the 1993 ident was better, but the one from 1989-92 was the best.

  • Amazing

  • Sniff, sniff, come back home Steve Ryder, all is forgiven, sniff, blubber...

  • ThiZZarfternoon's cup action

  • What cup is that at 1:43?

  • fa cup sponsored by littlewoods

  • what is the name of this theme music?

  • i just like to see how things changed so much i mean look at the difference in grandstand intros and the bbc sport logo its gone from crap in 1994 to good in 1996 i think its funny how back then things seemed the same but it was completely crap compared to later 90s i was born in 1991 btw i think the tunes class so is the theme from the bill

  • The second one is the best - the clips fit with the music perfectly :D

  • True memories from my early years of Loving Sport here. I'd be 9 or 10 and just glued to the TV for Hours on end on a Saturday Afternoon watching this. This is my earliest memory of actually adoring something on tv and i wish they'd never stopped it. But i guess with Sky and Setanta involved these days, times have to change

  • Steve Rider BBC Sport 1985-2005 and Itv Sport 1980-1985 and 2005 is he presenting this years Rugby World Cup on Itv in France

  • lol Steve Rider didnt change his hair style much did he!

  • 3rd and 4th after to be duing 1998 when the BBC changed its logo.

  • 3rd one from february 98 from murrayfield

  • BBC Grandstand - funny to see Steve 'ITV' Rder on all when we worked for the BBC.

  • Well Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1997 so it must be that year on the last 2 Grandstand clips and Man United won the FA Cup in 1996 so the second one must be 1996 approximately.

  • Waht date where these Grandstand clips recorded?

  • BBC Grandstand is the best I miss BBC Sport Grandstand we love you!

  • Have you got the video of the ending credits of Grandstand from the 90s and which website was this clip from?
