If it serves to boost your national self esteem, Sweden beats most countries in the world in things that really matter, like life quality, education and social welfare. Compared to that, a music contest is not that important. If you don't qualify, nothing happens, no one dies... Andorra knows a lot about that.

As I see, most of countries have to rely on skills to a certain degree. Yeah, there's always political and neighbouring voting, but it only sets TENDENCIES, like Russia receiving more votes than... say... Slovenia, for an act of comparable quality.

But tendencies alone, even if they help, are not enough to win. In order to win, an act needs to overcome block voting, and the proof is that most of the winning acts receive points from lots of countries, not only their neighbors.

Not that I appreciate the fact that Sweden takes Abba's music for granted and try to infuse their musicallity into their annoying schlager making ABBA sound unoriginal and missrespected. The only reason why I did not feel surprised with this win was: It was the only song performed on stage in 1999 where live performance was FLAWLESS and a great choir. I just find sad the need to "rely on" Abba's music. Sweden used to be better than this ... everything before 1999 was better but anyway ... :(
