Very good, but! I know given the cars layout and therefore cog there is an awful lot of time lost out of some corners due to having a heavy foot!! Clean and precise, especially when coming through the field.
Once a year or so I come back and watch this video again--I love it!!
My first race car was a Healey 3000 but I 'graduated' to sports racers etc.
I was "handed my hat" by Phil Coombes driving a 57FAC at Laguna Seca-I was driving a Lotus 26R as were several others he beat that day-done right and driven right a Healey 3000 is a very fast car.
the healy was a bizarre concoction , a truck engine , a morris gear box used in bentlys. aluminum body designed by an air force pilot . fun stuff though
Sounds like he's flat shifting about half the time. I wonder if my 3000 would sound like this one at 7200 RPM? I think not -- it would make a bang and some clatter trailing off to a sickly silence. I'm just fine with how it sounds at 3000 to 4000 RPM.
He started near the back of the pack, behind many cars (Fiat 500s, Abarths, Anglias, etc etc) that have far less poetential (obviously) and as such were racing in slower classes. But his driving is terrific, regardless. I owned two Healey 3000s, a 1960 and a '62 (I bought it new) , which was the three-carb model and the last 3000 true roadster. Great little cars and ripe for a small block Chevy engine. Sacrilegious, I know, but do you want to go fast or REALLY fast?
@closertofiftythanyew I've over 30 years racing vintage cars. So I can't let your "911" comment go by unchallenged. Here's the deal: The video is from a present day vintage racing event. In the 60's these cars never would have raced each other (MInis, MGAs, Fiats. Engines from 1000 cc to 3200 cc. Sedans, GTs, sports cars). Wouldn't have been fair. Or good racing for that matter. So don't get too excited about seeing a 260 hp, 3 liter Healey pass a 145 hp, 2 liter Porsche 912 (not a 911). Cheers
@eracerhead100 No probs - I thought myself was four cyl 912s too. I know something about that Austin-Healey, it is not what it looks, very 'borderline' with the interpretation of the rules. It's got a one-off billet crank and all sort of custom bits in the engine with a capacity of near four litres or something, giving out well over 300bhp or something. Because it was not that very standard racing spec from the '60s, that is why it was allowed to start but at the back of the grid, the rumour is.
@closertofiftythanyew Thanks. Pleased to hear that you know the car. WOW... 300 hp. I'd love to get some seat time in that car. BTW, if you're anyway near San Diego I'd like to invite you to the Coronado Speed Festival on Sept 24 and 25. Lots of race cars dfrom the 20s - 60s (including Healeys). Go online to find out more. Come by the Porsche Club of America VIP Tent and say hi. Cheers.
@eracerhead100 Thanks for the offer, but it is a bit too far for me, and the wrong side of the Atlantic. But have a good festival, and I will have a look at the pics and vids of it afterwards on the website and youtube etc...
One event I wouldn't mind going over to see, which has been in my mind for years, is the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in Colorado. 'Monster' was fastest time again this year I heard, couple of weeks back. Ah well, maybe one day.
@closertofiftythanyew Thanks for the link to the Euro GT goodness. I spent 2, of the best years of my life, in Europe (living between London and Stockholm... With lots of trips up to Northern Scotland where I have family) racing, and test driving, for Lola. Thanks for the the great racing footage... And memories. Cheers.
@closertofiftythanyew This healey is exactly what it looks, 3 liter engine with steel bottom end!! Not near 4 litres. Started at the back because of new engine fitted during the friday night......Didn't do any practice, engine was zero miles at the start!!!Thats a better reason then you mention......The Porsches are 200 hp 150.000 euro 911 not 912!! Regards, The Owner and builder of this car!!
@closertofiftythanyew Im an old bugger now who always dreamt of owning an Healey but never did but I have drvien a few cars with this motor and they are smooth and dont mind a few revs also these engines could clock over high milages.
@closertofiftythanyew Your mention of the bar after or between races gets the nostalgia going. Probably as good as the racing. I was around in the days of the Healey and because I live in Perth WA, the most remote city on earth, we didn't have a sufficient numbers in most classes so we had a formula libre race of 6 hours. A mini Le Mans race and you raced whatever you had. There were Healeys & Jags competing against all comers even things like Chev sedans. The vid reminds me of that. Nice
Perth! Yes, used to away from anything, but it has become a marvellous city in the last few decades, I've heard?
Ever been to the Bathurst race in Mount Panorama, the other side from you in NSW? I've been following that race for years - the 1966 one is a classic for me, Rauno Aaltonen/ Bob Holden winning in a Morris Mini Cooper S - a giant killing act. They should run it with the same formula, near-standard cars in showroom price classes.
@closertofiftythanyew Thanks for links. Never been to Bathurst1000 Airfares double at that time. Driven over circuit though & admire drivers for having the balls to keep their foot flat all down the steep mountain. Very scenic place as it's one of the oldest settled places in Aust. Lovely old buildings which were clones of the houses that the rich colonials had in England similar to some of your early colonial homes I guess. What part of US are you from. I'm travelling amtrak across US in 2012

Bob, I am noy Yank, I am fropm Britain. I can tell the best way up the M1, but California's Laurel Canyon is I have yet to meet, but hopefully, say no more...
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
Oh, dude! You're film is backwards. You've got the steering wheel on the wrong side. heehee! Wow, look at those old Fiats, Bimmers, Porsches, other Healeys, Alfas, ... grand! Super video! Thanks for sharing! Great sound, too! You're obviously a great driver, too. Coooool!
The overdrive switch is mounted on the steering wheel and controlled by his right hand... Basterd indeed thats why we call this car The Orange Bastard ;)
What a great video, the action and engine noise are superb. I had a Healey BN7 that had a 360 HP small block Ford that didn't sound this good. One thing baffles me, how did Michael Jackson get into the rear view mirror?
El tipo lleva muy bien el auto en la pista............pero tiene pedazo de cañon dentro del capot, facil tiene 30 CV más que los otros (tipo Juan kk Gac)
I have no idea...sounds great.I spent some time on altavista bable fish and made a rough translation of what the subtitles say.its not perfect but i dont care...enjoy
as from 40 e place with new engine, open ongetraind express and "of god separately" on the terrace above state tjeerd he gives me it "take out" sign is as from this place see... just as quiet, none small autootjes eradicates new moto, now 1.5 km ingereden..groot heart, buitenom goes exactly... now slow and concentrate on the uitaccelereren... the new engine works regular 7200 tpm... of porsche's becomes Healey's more rapidly... 12e... 11th
Its the 3.0 litre Austin -Healey engine which I suspect has been boerd out to 3.2 litres or more to get that sort of performance and is probably using triple Weber Carbs or even modified fuel injection - which is now possible. Bullet proof engines
Nice video. I have a Austin Healey with original but modified engine. I don't know the exact power, perhaps 190-200 Hp but i thought that the overdrive cannot be turn on at high revolutions. I never have raced but in another occasion I read that overdrive in race is not due to drive if you want to finish a race but in that case the 4 gear will be too much short. Is you overdrived improved? Is it durable? Thanks.
Thanks for the specs-- do you know how much HP it makes? That competition overdrive is wild- it sounds like it shifts almost as fast as a GP car! Or at least as fast as a motorcycle anyway...
This healey has a triple 45 DCOE weber, over 300 degrees camshaft, reworked alloy head, alloy flywheel, race pistons, steel balanced crank, SCCR gearbox, competition overdrive, six branch OPEN exhaust(hence the noise). Overdrive switch on steeringwheel, fully sorted suspension, LSD, good driver! And I know this, because I serviced the car.
I was gonna say... I've been around hundreds of old 100-6s and 3000s, but never seen one run like that! Also never knew the overdrive could be used to split gears! Shows you what them Brits can do with a torquey pushrod straight six and a little racing know-how.
I LOVE IT!! I have a Healey 3000MKIII, BJ8, pure stock. Obviously it sounds nothing like this. The guy has some real guts going up the middle like he does. Where did he finish in the race? Thanks again for posting this. Serious fun!!
Great stuff-- but is the sound track genuine? My Dad had a Mk I 3000 and it sure didn't sound like that! Mainly, though, the shift noises don't always correspond to the driver's hand motions-- unless he's jumping in and out of overdrive. Also, that has to be a straight-cut transmission. Great fun, though, thanks for sharing!
The reason for posting this video is that it seems unreal. But believe me, there are no tricks involved. Of course we are listening to an extremely tuned, pure race engine! That might explain the difference to your fathers engine bugeyedfrog. And yes, it is the overdrive, controlled by a switch on the steering wheel.
I'm worn out after watching that... great video.

Calm down, only trying to build a myth of an excellent BMC car, so I exaggerated a bit, no harm in it.
But it does look impressive slaughtering those Porsches, four or six cylinder. Wonder where Porsche got their original ideas from, ey?

but in the MGC the engine was far forward than a Healey, and it was an useless load of nonsense.
They should have been building an Austin-Healey 3000 well into the 1970s, subllety changed, a la Porsche 911 rubbish.

Its the 3.0 litre Austin -Healey engine which I suspect has been boerd out to 3.2 litres or more to get that sort of performance and is probably using triple Weber Carbs or even modified fuel injection - which is now possible. Bullet proof engines

250 BHP revving to 7200. Overdrive is super but needs to be in tiptop condition to work like this.
PietjeDiagnose 4 years ago
Ja man, 7200 toeren zonder de motor in te rijden, na nog geen kilometer te hebben gereden...
zal niet lang meer leven op dat tempo..of niet?

Thanks.
jlredo 3 years ago 2
This home-built engine has close to 280 hp!!
The overdrive is used between 3 th and 4th gear and on 4th gear. It is uprated and will last a complete season!! The gearbox has the
famous Tulip gear ratios.Want to know more, just ask, we have no secrets, but lots of tricks.... L.B. Racing , NL
Exterion89 3 years ago
Thanks for the specs-- do you know how much HP it makes? That competition overdrive is wild- it sounds like it shifts almost as fast as a GP car! Or at least as fast as a motorcycle anyway...
bugeyedfrog 4 years ago
This healey has a triple 45 DCOE weber, over 300 degrees camshaft, reworked alloy head, alloy flywheel, race pistons, steel balanced crank, SCCR gearbox, competition overdrive, six branch OPEN exhaust(hence the noise). Overdrive switch on steeringwheel, fully sorted suspension, LSD, good driver! And I know this, because I serviced the car.
PietjeDiagnose 4 years ago 3
I was gonna say... I've been around hundreds of old 100-6s and 3000s, but never seen one run like that! Also never knew the overdrive could be used to split gears! Shows you what them Brits can do with a torquey pushrod straight six and a little racing know-how.

Great job mate, i wish i could get my dad to do the same to his BJ8, what a wicked, dare i say it 'merlin-esque' soundtrack!

I saw nuff Healey's popping flames at last Spa 6Hrs . . . Great machines.

I LOVE IT!! I have a Healey 3000MKIII, BJ8, pure stock. Obviously it sounds nothing like this. The guy has some real guts going up the middle like he does. Where did he finish in the race? Thanks again for posting this. Serious fun!!
441jim 5 years ago
Great stuff-- but is the sound track genuine? My Dad had a Mk I 3000 and it sure didn't sound like that! Mainly, though, the shift noises don't always correspond to the driver's hand motions-- unless he's jumping in and out of overdrive. Also, that has to be a straight-cut transmission. Great fun, though, thanks for sharing!
bugeyedfrog 5 years ago
yeah sounds weird indeed, but the engine sounds seem to match the track and the car movements.
350kmh 5 years ago
The reason for posting this video is that it seems unreal. But believe me, there are no tricks involved. Of course we are listening to an extremely tuned, pure race engine! That might explain the difference to your fathers engine bugeyedfrog. And yes, it is the overdrive, controlled by a switch on the steering wheel.
