increiblemete espectaculares...
Life is too short to forget this quirky one! Synth vocals Made This an unforgettable song!
I am happy to have the chance to bring this one to the musicians looking for Retro stuff to play!!! My son ( The Odessa Steps Sequence) bass player usually play Originals but, they have a post-punk New Wave kinda thing going on...this could be a great cover for them!!!
@MrDingon I don't understand why the third or fourth thing that comes up when I search for this clip on my Bluray player's YouTube app is What-What In The Butt!
i have thought about this song once a year for about the last twenty but never heard it and it is great to hear it again spurred on by hearing Living By Numbers on Chris Evans yesterday 24/03/11. This was a better song and ahead of its time as others say. It is nice reading the other sentimental comments and know there's nothing with being so - live for now but cherish those memories and this had plenty.
Probably the first electronic based synth group to move away from all that moody dressed in black futuristic angle and paved the way for synths to be seen as primarily pop instruments and not simply to conjure images of an apocalyptic future. Even The Human League started having hits when they became more poppy.
@pedrofaba Got to admit love this and Living by Numbers. I'm lucky enough to be seeing China Crisis live next month. Can't wait. Saw them live in 2009 at the 80's Rewind Festival in Henley nr London but it's just them this time....
@fyrret09 -enjoy the show,i saw them back in 86 in NYC at the becon theater and they were great, they open up the show with--african and white---one of my fav,i went crazy after that -lol-
Back in the eighties I heard this twice. It is very up there on my list, even though it sounds a little date technologically, I thought it was walk on water, that is why I never found it untill now.
Iam so speechless and taken in by this group and song. This song brings the emotions of my memories of 1980 to the surface. All I can say is, it makes me want to cry and smile at the same time. Its sad and spine tingling, makes me feel good, so very talented as expected from New musik. Its an all in one song.Period!!! Yes What a great track. Funny how everyone says it's better than the crap today. I am confident you wont hear any of todays stuff and the last 10 years in a golden oldies radio show in the next 20 years. 70's and 80's what a great time to have been around...wish I was there now MM
This is a great eco-world disaster type of song, and there wasn't many around at the time, unless of course Hawkwind were banging on about it too at the time as usual!
@66DREAM "always thought BUGGLES did this song".There's a connection, since the drummer for New Muzik, Phil Towner, did the drumming on Video Killed The Radio Star. It wasn't a drum machine on the Buggles song, though the drumming was edited (by Phil, who was a whizz at the mixing desk as well as one of the best live drummers around).
The singer (& writer, producer, keyboard and guitar player) is the phenomenally talented Tony Mansfield. The song made it to about 21 in the British singles chart & a further 3 singles from the album 'From A to B' also charted, including the big hit 'Living by Numbers'. Another song from the album, 'On Islands' was released in France & reached number 1. They were hugely underrated, much of it caused by Mansfields inhibitions. The second album 'Anywhere' is a cult classic & my fav. album ever.
@BlackmoonUK Agree totally! I would give anything or go anywhere (no pun intended) to see them play just one more gig, or indeed release a new studio album. New Musik are what I miss most about music today.
Well Mike Mansfield - the singer and producer (I think) with this band did go on to be the next best thing apart from Trevor Horn during the 80s and produced all the best Aha classics, so without him I guess Aha wouldn't have sounded like they did. He did produce loads of other 80's classics that I can't think of here, but can you remember 'Vicious Pink - Ccccant you see'? That's another lost 80's classic!

Great Tony Mansfield and the Synth Prophet 5 (SCI), the keyboard synth that Tony oriented to SynthPop, in a way that only a genius like Mansfield coul do.
dude dont say bad things about these years there is also good music these times then gangsta rap and bulschit like royksopp thats just one hell of music from these times dont judge on the music u here on the radio and tv
Tony 'Bruiser' Mansfield - a very underated bloke, who should get a lot more credit, not just for his contribution to electronic pop, but his production skills also.
Check out the 1st 2 Captain Sensible lp's, which he produced, co-wrote, and played keyboards on - well recommended.
Thank you so much for posting this. I thought I would never get to hear it again. It has really cheered me up. Thanks for your effort to share it here.
I love this song! Seems like yesterday-but of course it's around 30 years ago-almost impossible to comprehend.
As for Thatcher -time is the greatest judge -compared to Major , Blair , Brown and the media creation -Obama-she is streets better. Don't agree with all her policies-but compared to the focus group obsessed nonentities we have on offer now -from all parties-she was a proper leader. Amazing achievement for a woman as well.
amyINRG - how right you are. Good to see that this country is not full of the whingers who blame everyone but themselves. As a great man once said - Get On your Bike : )
The titles in Spanish on top of this copy of the original video, shows that it was used for ending one of the weekly broadcasts of the TV show "Popgrama". A TV pop music show in the channel 2 of TVE (Spain's public Television). On air from 1977 until 1981. Someone from Spain must have had a copy on VHS and upload it to youtube.
It's a legend. I vaguely remember this in 1979 or thereabouts if I'm correct and even back then I thought of it as a lively tune. I was 4 years old at the time. I felt a little bit scared of the video though, especially when the guys were appearing and staring through the sunglasses! LOL!!! But as a kid in those days I was entitled to be scared, wasn't I? Especially when I used to watch a lot of Doctor Who with my parents at the time.... Now U know what I mean!
1980 - great year - wouldn't it have been great to have music this good all through the decade - at the end of 1980 Spandau Ballet released their first record - it was downhill from here I'm afraid.
I think I can claim to be one of the few to have seen New Musik play live (at Manchester Poly back in the good old days of 'pop'). As there was me, my brother, a friend and perhaps three others in the audience, my claim is pretty valid I think!!!
I heard this track once when working at the bbc in London, then never again. I could not understand why as it was such a materpiece. I was beginning to think i imagined it but now i see i recall it well. Brilliant masterpiece.
I remember this when I was at hgh scool in the early 80s-a whole group of us used to check out the brit scene-New music's singles always sounded so fresh & edgy! It seemed like the UK was the only place on earth that was really happening. We were always dreaming of coming to England & meeting David Bowie...!
Listened to this band on CFNY in Toronto. Very catchy melodies. Too bad nobody can write songs like this anymore. I have their material on vinyl and now cd, but haven't seen this video in a very long time. Thanks for posting.
my friends cousin is in this band. an excellent band. i had several of thier lp's years ago.

Absolutely cracking song, one of those that sticks in my memory from childhood. New Musik were definitely a British band. It's quite clearly :
Singer/Guitarist : Comedian Steve Punt;
Keyboards : Peep Show's Robert Webb
Bass : Blur's Alex James (during his fat period)
Or maybe not. They were British though.

Weird. this tune is up on radio these days all the time. I honestly thaught it was a new tune.

Top tune....not heard it for years.

My favorite New Musk song.

How does that bass player manage such a work of virtuoso brilliance ?
BigChelseaDan 2 years ago
I heard this track once when working at the bbc in London, then never again. I could not understand why as it was such a materpiece. I was beginning to think i imagined it but now i see i recall it well. Brilliant masterpiece.

Quite a bold image statement, considering that beards were illegal in the early 80's
Firedreamer77 2 years ago
Thats as ELO had the copyright , franchise and every concession on them. If you wanted to have a beard you had to pay them.
