well, i understand how ncloth and a dress works but what if it were a poofy dress that didn't flow as much? how do you make it move less? is it somewhere in the settings?
@uzumakiii The process is two fold. First you want to design the geometry to accomodate the intended deformations of the dress. Second you would adjust the attributes of the ncloth. There isn't any one all solution. Most if not all of the attributes under the Dynamic properties rollout will need to be adjusted depending on the type of material you are creating.
Beautiful. With fast movements, how can I control the interpenetration?, what about if in the middle of the animation, i got 1 body face got interpenetrated with the cloth faces? How can I correct that?
@speffects: i was trying to access your site, but it's down. i want to buy your tutorial Maya Cloth for Characters. i really want it but since i'm from a developing country, i can' afford it.. could you please give me a discount price?..

@DCampbell01 I think I was getting around 2 minutes a frame. nCloth itself does not add anything to your render time. It takes more work to complete prior to rendering but nothing during rendering. Mental Ray was used with Final Gather. nCloth is awesome. If you are looking to get into CG effects type work you definitely should learn nCloth.
Wow really nice job with the simulation I especially love how the dress carries over the motion even when the character stops. I had a project where I had to create a shirt and pants for an animated character and had a hell of a time getting the shirt to stop being so bouncy, the compression and stretch resistance were pretty high so maybe I'm missing something. Teach me your ways! haha
Buy my book! LOL, just kidding. I used a stretch of 100 and a compression of 10.But more importantly the damp was set to .4. The damp is key to prevent run away bouncing.
@speffects Very cool thanks for the tip! I played around with damping originally but I think that by the time I did I had already altered the stretch and compression resistance to a point where adding the damping created a really strange effect. I'm still new to nCloth and dynamics in general but I learning and it's definitely a good challenge.
@speffects One question though. Do you use CP Cloth to stitch your clothes together and then convert it to nCloth or do you just model out the clothing and simulate from there?
I do not use the CP cloth tools. I use to swear by them, but have found that nCloth does not like irregular geometry. It works best with evenly spaced, uniformly flowing surfaces. Also the poly tools have come along way, its quicker and easier to build all polys now.
@speffects Yeah thats true though I still know a couple of die hard NURBS modelers. I can't imagine building patches for a human hand or ear...especially the ear, those things are hard enough to model in polys! The thing that I do like about CP cloth is that because it is irregular geometry, you can generate more diverse and organic looking creases. Doesn't do so hot with motion, but apparently the original Matrix was all CP cloth. Pretty amazing what they did.
@speffects Hi, what settings do you change to ncloth such that the straps on the dress stays with the character while the flowing parts at the bottom can sway around? I tried quite a bit but my cloth seems to love flying and moving around...
@Vampyreq Usually the best way to keep the cloth from sliding around the shoulders is to use a constraint. A component, transform or slide will work. The cool part about each of these is that you can reduce the strength and or weight of the constraint to allow the cloth some freedom of movement and not completely lock it down.

very nice work.
Trying to assess whether or not I should use nCloth in my major, in regards to render times.
How long did this take to render out? And is it batched out and using Mental Ray?
Thanks heaps, again, looks very cool.

After you convert your geometry to nCloth you can assign any material and texture to it.
