The game is very mediocre, gameplay-wise. What people like is its cult value and funny moments. Kinda like Zero Wing, except Altered Beast was mainstream (it was bundled with the Mega Drive in many countries).

What cracks me up is that people from my generation..I am 26 and I got this fucking game when it came out..they compare it to Golden Axe and that makes me want to pop a blood vessel. Golden Axe was an awesome game. Use the dwarf and you can beat the game on any difficulty.

However, we had this on a plug it in and play system years ago, and I disliked it. I never made it past the third round, from what I remember. To my seven year old mind, this game was horrifying...I was afraid of the cheesy voice overs in this game, especially that "AUGHHHHH!" whenever you die. The first boss REALLY got to me, whatever reason it may be.
