My gosh - Even now, forty years later, these scenes and the music still give me a shiver- I loved my Husky so. Malcolm was such a hero to me- he made it look soooo easy.
I saw this movie with some friends at the El Portal Theater on Lankershim Blvd. in North Hollywood back in the summer of 1971. We were around 12 and 13 at the time... What a time to be alive in California!
I almost forgot about this movie, that is, until I had a son of my own. Now we ride every other Sunday, free like the tail of a kite.
That is a super classic movie that inspired a lot of people in the tt bikes...is on any sunday because in America and other places is in sunday when people go ride a bike....like in others sports
Greatest movie ever made. Saw it 11 time as a boy when it first hit the theaters and have the DVD. Truly was magical seeing on the big screen as a boy who had been involved in offroad mc's since age 9 and still riding and racing today...my son, daughter and wife ride and my son and I also roadrace. Bruce Brown truly showed the world what the sport is really like. The music and video still gives chills to this day. Thanks a bunch for posting.
I remember when I was a kid and didn't have any money (and pops wasn't giving me any either). When my bike was going down, I would put my body between it and the ground because I couldn't afford for it to break. Now at 55, there's a certain point when I know I gotta bail!
Hey @twoweeled, I LOVE what you've shared with us. We should ALL have something in life we want or love as much as this AND do EVERYTHING to preserve it- no matter what! That's the Spirit of Life right there! Though I'm glad you're easing up... You've probably got better insurance now too!
P.S. First time I ever felt compelled to respond to a youtube comment btw- Thanks!
@CahtodeRay hey Ray, just found your comment. sorry so late! that's the truth, and yes, I do have better insurance. I had no insurance then . I had one pretty bad fall and ended up in the county hospital for 7 days. If I went down like that now, it would be more like 7 years!!!
I think I had so much admiration for Steve McQueen because when he was in a postion to let it all hang out,,,HE DID!!!!!
Movie star or not, when he went down - he knew he was gonna feel just like any of us would!
This movie brings back memories.Saw this at theater when it first came out,i was about 11 yrs old.I didnt have a motorcycle then, but we went to a field behind the house and.made a dirt track for our bicycles.I own a 2006 Suzuki Hayabusa now. Thanks for taking us down memory lane.
Endless summer, that's the kinda feeling you get watching this video and listening to this song. When something brings you great memories and heart warming, you call it Endless Summer. Steve McQueen you are an endless summer. Rip.
this movie gives me the same feeling as the early surf films (5 Summer Stories, Fluid Drive, etc.) I used to enjoy, just flowing, no commercialism, riding just for the sheer joy of moving. Thanks for posting.
Still gives me chills as it did when the movie first came out and I saw it as a kid and I was riding dirt bikes. I have the DVD and perhaps seen the movie over 50 times. What an age, what an era. Wish I could go back there. I still ride/race only now with my 15 year old son and 18 year old daughter. Best movie ever made....thank you Bruce Brown. Any chance of making another? Could be the same format for an entirely new generation.
Brown found a perfect location for a sunset beach riding shot — Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. I figured there would be no way to get approval to film on the Marine base, Brown said. Steve McQueen said hed see what he could find out. The next day he called and told to contact some General. The following day, we were able to shoot.
I need to see and hear this now and then it makes me feel like I did a lotta years ago when I would go out riding with my friends Thanks for posting it!
On Any Sunday by Dominic Frontiere-They put out a soundtrack cd of this film a couple years back. Try dustygroovesamerica, buysoundtrax or screenarchives.
wow, great movie, legendary actor and rider Steve McQueen, Legendary Dirt Track racer Mert Lawwill and of course good old Malcolm Smith. the greatest of the greats
Thank you for posting one of my favorate flims. I own a Husqvarna 400 Cross 1970, that Malcolm Smith, Mert Lawwell, JN Roberts, and Bruce Brown signed the gas tank. Again, thanks for the post

I wouldn't take anything from the riders in this film, but Bruce Brown is the man.
He did for the cycles what he did for surfing with "Endless Summer," and his
quiet humor keeps things going even when the going gets rough. Simply
wonderful movies.

On Any Sunday looking back on the crowd
From the far out place I found
Screaming inside of me, and laughing out loud
I'm losing contact with the ground, I'm flyin'
Over my shoulder through the dust I'm calling
Run wild and catch me if you can
On any Sunday I'm a flyin' man
Free as the wind, faster than time, reason and rhyme are running behind.
Tasting the sun Feeling the Earth, Knowing my worth and freeing my mind...
